Word from the Future: ABC News Destroys All Credibility

by: Bob Brigham

Wed Apr 16, 2008 at 19:42:38 PM PDT

All reports indicate that when the ABC News Democratic Party Debate airs in the Pacific Time zone at 8 PM that you are better off doing pretty much anything other than watching it. There are reviews are already in and there seems to be a clear consensus on Charles Gibson and George Stephanopoulos and ABC News and the parent company Disney.

"Looking around other sites, I guess I'm not the only one that thought this debate was unmitigated travesty," Josh Marshall noted. "Maybe the embargo on debate rebroadcast was a pro-human rights stand."

Bob Brigham :: Word from the Future: ABC News Destroys All Credibility
"The debate is over, and I feel like I need a shower. [...] The crowd here is starting to boo Gibson. Like, a lot. Hilarious and well-deserved."
-Chris Bowers

"No Charlie. It hasn't been a "fascinating debate." It's been genuinely awful."
-Josh Marshall

"What matters to this network is money, and that is where we need to go.  Starting tomorrow, my spare time, meager as it is, will be dedicated to revealing the advertisers of this network, for the purpose of organized boycotts."
-Dartagnan (top Recommended Diary on Dailykos)

"Light'Em Up
Complain about this atrocity.
Main ABC switchboard: 212-456-7777
...complain here.
"
-Atrios

"My friend Dan McQuade calls this the lowest moment in American history -- I think he's giving it too much credit, frankly."
-Will Bunch

"George and Charlie were just rumor-mongering right wingers. Charlie thought it was "fascinating." Wrong. It was just very pathetic and disturbing. If you ever question the sad state of affairs in the American political dialogue, tonight's debate was Exhibit A."
-Joe Sudbay

"This debate was just horrible. Too much time wasted on useless nonsense. From a media perspective, I am not sure why Stephanopoulos was in the mix at all. He didn't add much, and if anything, his history with the Clintons had the potential to take something away. I thought Gibson was especially rough on Obama, and I think ABC did not do themselves any good with this debate. If I weren't liveblogging, I would have switched to AI."
-Jacki Schechner

"This is the most disgraceful and dispiriting debate of all time."
-BooMan

"In perhaps the most embarrassing performance by the media in a major presidential debate this year, ABC News hosts Charles Gibson and George Stephanopolous focused mainly on trivial issues as Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama faced off in Philadelphia."
-Editor and Publisher

"Reflecting what seemed to be the main consensus of the night - that ABC botched this debate, big time - Charlie Gibson tells the crowd there will be one more, superfluous commercial break of the night and is subsequently jeered. "OH..." he declares, hands raised in defense. "The crowd is turning on me, the crowd is turning on me.""
-Huffington Post

I feel sorry for both Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama.

Sorry.... (0.00 / 0)
.....I too love SF, Miss Nancy....no so much.

'Off the table...'....not so much.

'Suboena power...'....not so much.

'Shut up SuperDelegates....'...uh, no.

'Accountability....'  to who?

Speaker Pelosi will go down as one of the biggest Democratic failures in modern times. Under her majority rule the Decider continues to murder and pillage the ME, the Decider thumbs his nose at the Geneva convention, nothing has been done on developing the sustainable energy industry, rather the opposite and the House passed a whonkin' big pork-filled Farm Bill that put the entire planet back decades.

Put down the Kool-Aide chumly and go cold turkey. Pelosi deserves only the support the point of my shoe could give her as I kick her to the curb.

fuck anyone who disses my city (8.00 / 2)
San Francisco is a nice place and I would never think to dis other people's hometowns with bullshit cynical stereotypes, why then must we consistently take a beating from the parasitical right wing?

And I'm also sick of people capping on Speaker Pelosi. That goes for the ultra right wing nutjobs as well as the far left that sucks as well.

Anyone else that's sick of this kind of crapola, join me at

Ironic (8.00 / 4)
In my classes today I was discussing the role of the media in politics, and explained that one of the characteristic factors of contemporary journalism was an ignorance of the issues and a focus on meaningless, trivial "gotcha" matters. I should have just sent them home early and told them to watch the debate...

You can check out any time you like but you can never leave

Gary and I are sitting (8.00 / 2)
here watching this "debate" and we are both appalled.  Clinton is talking about Farrakhan and his Church, just total BS.  I can't believe this.

Two minutes on the sniper fire.  How does someone misspeak about something like this?  I am blown away.  She will try to get more sleep?  What about when the phone rings at 3am?

I don't think I can watch it anymore.

One of the interesting phenomena (6.00 / 2)
In this election has been voter backlash against the media. Whenever the media attacks one of the Democratic candidates, voters have tended to rally around that candidate in outrage. We saw this with Hillary a few times, and now with Obama - his poll numbers in PA weren't dented a bit by the "bitter" comment and I suspect his numbers will rise in response to this debate.

It doesn't make the media's behavior any less horrifying and shameful, of course. But it does suggest the public is ripe for a pushback.

Like a lot of you (8.00 / 5)
I spent last Sunday volunteering to help send delegates to the national convention in Denver.

The volunteers involved in running the caucus  gave their time and energy so that 1,000 people in Oakland could vote for the delegate candidates of their choice.

1,000 of us Obama supporters all came out to vote on a Sunday afternoon. We did this because we give a shit about California and Oakland and this country. We care.

ABC News, Charles Gibson and George Stephanopolos just took a HUGE SHIT on us. They took all of our time, our effort and our concern about Oakland, and CD-09, and California and the USA and they trivialized it with questions about Ayers and Wright and Flag Lapel Pins!!??

ABC News just did a take down of Barack Obama on live national TV for 45 minutes.

That's unforgiveable. But more than that there's little we can do about. Our little local world doesn't connect to ABC News and Disney.

They clearly could give a crap about us.

But our local stations have phone lines. And our local elected officials who are STILL endorsing Hillary Clinton even as she joins in the politics of Kitchen Sink and Scorched Earth on Barack Obama have phone lines.

I'm going to contact KGO and let them know what I think of that debate.

I'm going to get in touch with Senator Feinstein and Mayor Dellums and my Assemblyperson Sandre Swanson.

I'm fed up with this.

1,000 good people took time out on a Sunday afternoon because they care about Oakland and CD-09 and our democracy.

ABC and Hillary Clinton just trashed all that.

I think the best response is the local one. In fact, more and more, I think that local feedback is the only way we take this country back.

had to stop watching (8.00 / 2)
I can't afford to buy a new TV right now and certainly would have destroyed it in rage had I kept watching another second.

I want to vomit. Cliche, but actually physically true right now.

Horrifying.

This diary at dkos has some incredible quotes from WaPo about the debate:

At the end, Gibson pompously thanked the candidates -- or was he really patting himself on the back? -- for "what I think has been a fascinating debate." He's entitled to his opinion, but the most fascinating aspect was waiting to see how low he and Stephanopoulos would go, and then being appalled at the answer.

Will Bunch:

With your performance tonight -- your focus on issues that were at best trivial wastes of valuable airtime and at worst restatements of right-wing falsehoods, punctuated by inane "issue" questions that in no way resembled the real world concerns of American voters -- you disgraced my profession of journalism, and, by association, me and a lot of hard-working colleagues who do still try to ferret out the truth, rather than worry about who can give us the best deal on our capital gains taxes. But it's even worse than that. By so badly botching arguably the most critical debate of such an important election, in a time of both war and economic misery, you disgraced the American voters, and in fact even disgraced democracy itself. Indeed, if I were a citizen of one of those nations where America is seeking to "export democracy," and I had watched the debate, I probably would have said, "no thank you." Because that was no way to promote democracy.

Anyone here heard that definition of insanity.... (0.00 / 0)

...........You know, the one where Bowers, Kos and Marshall keep doing the same thing and keep getting run over by the ReichWing Train?

While Jerome goes, 'Uh,....guys, guys....could we stop and think about this.

Does anyone here seriously think the corporate media is gonna change? While they are still beating our brains in.

Fun thing about the A-listers I mentioned is they have..

No freakin' clue as to what to do! As evincdd by their total lack of policy or bedrock principles!

Time for a change in direction I do believe.
