Obama Slashes and Burns through the Delegate List

by: Brian Leubitz

Wed Apr 09, 2008 at 15:53:25 PM PDT

(This story is developing as we speak, I think we're getting closer to the Obama campaign's process on this. Check out the Bee story and keep an eye out for more stories in print tomorrow. - promoted by Brian Leubitz)

On Monday, juls wrote about how the campaigns could "prune" their delegate lists.  I didn't pay much attention, but perhaps I should have.  Here is the new list.

Today, I learned that I have been pruned out of my delegate race. I will say that I didn't really expect to win. There were people in my district that were better organized and better known (Chris Daly). And they both made the cut. However, I didn't figure the campaign to whom I donated money, and to whom I traveled to two different states for, would decide that I wasn't loyal enough. Heck, I spent March 4 working for Buffy Wicks (the CA field director) in Texas at the Election Hotline.

I understand that the Obama campaign is wary of the Clinton campaign picking off some of their pledged delegates, but you would figure that the least they could do would be to cross reference their donation rolls and their volunteer lists.

I understand that Obama cut about 1000 of his delegate candidates, compared to about 20 for Clinton. If Barack Obama wanted to increase participation and activism amongst youth leaders, cutting leaders in the  California Young Dems and other youth leaders wasn't the best way to start.

So, if you were "pruned", I feel your pain.

UPDATE: I want to add one thing about this process. Specifically, this is a function of the Obama campaign, and if they expect to get any more time or money from me, I need to hear some sort of reasonable answer from the campaign.

I want to thank some folks from the CDP for letting me know and talking about the issue. The CDP has no power over this, but they will get some of the blame for being the messenger. The party deserves blame for many things, but this isn't one of them.

UPDATE 2: I did some more research on the party's website, and I think I had the numbers a bit off.  Clinton cut around 40-50 of her approximately 950 delegate candidates.  Obama cut about 950 of about 1700 candidates. Somebody was getting paranoid...is that you Axelrod?

UPDATE 3: The SacBee now has a story about the delegate pruning. I sound very heartbroken, perhaps a little more than I actually am, but, ah well, dramatic license and all.

I also got an email from somebody familiar with the process. Essentially they said that the Chicago folks had the California Obama team ask the volunteers running the caucus to cut down for logistical and convention reasons. The results were less than exceptional, but better than the initial plan: trimming it to the minimum three people per slot.

UPDATE 4: k/o is right in the comments. Who am I kidding, I'll still give Obama money and my time. And perhaps I was a bit out of line when I said otherwise. However, as Lucas points out, it's a pretty top-down move from a campaign that is supposed to be bottom-up. I can forgive mistakes and move on, but I still think the campaign needs to send out a message to its grassroots supporters that it values and respects them.

way uncool (8.00 / 1)
I can't believe they did this to you.

Man (8.00 / 1)
I wonder what criteria they used to pare that list.  Seems like they made some really dumb decisions.

It would also be interesting to know (0.00 / 0)
how the two campaigns reached their decisions?  Were they a bunch of campaign staffers in some room in another state cutting the lists based on their own criteria, did they get input from state director/staff?

I noticed a few names on the Clinton list that didn't look quite right either. One of the people cut was sitting at the Clinton booth at the Convention! I think Clinton had around 990 people applied and just over 940 that are on the final list.

Compare that to the Obama applicants where around 1 out of 2 applicants were cut.

[ Parent ]
The differences between the two campaigns are staggering... (8.00 / 1)
What I can't believe is that not only did the Obama campaign cut people like Brian, but also people like Rocky Fernandez from the CYD.  Talk about a slap in the face.  Maybe they'll eventually explain their reasoning on how they picked their selections, but looking through the list I can't believe some of the people they did NOT cut versus some of the people they DID cut.

It makes little rhyme or reason, making me glad I declared for Clinton.

What's almost amusing (if it weren't so...sad) is that they did cut just about every Obama supporter I know who has spent the last year trying to convince me to support Obama. The delegate elections are supposed to be about Democratic activists, people who have supported the campaigns of their candidates standing up and being counted, being picked to go to Denver.  Instead it is starting to feel like a popularity contest, measuring the popularity of individuals with the Obama Campaign instead of local democrats who are Obama supporters.

I also took a look at the Clinton cuts, and there is actually some rhyme or reason to most of the cuts that I saw there.  A few didn't make too much sense, but then I didn't go look at contribution records. Oh well, good luck to everyone left on the lists!

That sucks an unbelievable amount. (0.00 / 0)
Especially considering how hard you've worked on his behalf.

My Nine-Year Old Nephew... (8.00 / 1)
just took the Obama sign out of his bedroom window when he heard his uncle Robert had been cut from the list...

In CD-9, there were 90+ delegates, last I looked... (8.00 / 1)
... Now there are 23 in this Alameda County congressional district.

And there are some very notable names not on the new list cut down by the Obama campaign.

This is, um, unfortunate, to say the least.

Disclosure: I work for the Courage Campaign. These opinions are my own and are not necessarily those of my employer.

When I say "90+"... (0.00 / 0)
... I meant on the Obama list.

Clinton had around 35-40 originally, if I remember correctly. Her current list shows 36, so they made either zero or few cuts in CA-9.

Disclosure: I work for the Courage Campaign. These opinions are my own and are not necessarily those of my employer.

i'd be interested in finding out more... (0.00 / 0)
I wonder if this was some group of someones in Chicago who decided this, or if there was any input from anyone in the California Obama campaign?

Seems a bit odd.

It's interesting to note where the delegate selection caucuses in the 12th CD are to be held. Obama's is in south city in a union hall - Hillary's is at crocker middle school in Hillsborough!

I think they got input (0.00 / 0)
I heard that they were asking about people, so it couldn't have just been from Chicago.  Not sure how the process worked, but they need to start talking about how it did, and soon.

it's an example of being too clever by 1/2, and having it blow up in people's faces. it is causing needless distraction and ticking off supporters and that's really not a good thing, but without knowing WHY they cut so many folks, makes it even worse...

glad I didn't give money. Only time..whatever.

On NPR earlier (8.00 / 1)
They were playing Obama's new PA ad centered around the notion of him leading a movement. Not when the campaign allows so few people to move.

I'm proud to work for Barbara Boxer

I hear ya (0.00 / 0)
I sympathize.. I'm officially DTS, so I was never allowed to register; though that's entirely my own undoing.  I thought about changing to Democrat and throwing in my name for a chance to go to Denver.. But I figured I would have been axe'd ahead of time like you were.  My lone contribution was giving up my entire Super Bowl Sunday.. that's about it, nothing close to what you did.  So while it's clear you got the short end, I do hope you don't let it permanently sour you on the Campaign.  It's people like you (committed early and active) who make the difference, and keep a Candidate viable, long enough, for people like me (on the fence till late this time).

If any higher ups at the Obama camp read this message...It's understandable you had to trim from a really, really long list.  However, if you have phone numbers for these people you cut, a personal call to reinforce morale could go a long way in mending and numbing the bitterness some are bound to feel.  It's one thing to participate and lose; another to be excluded out of hand.

I survived the cut so far (0.00 / 0)
But it's like soccer tryouts, everyday could be a cut day.
Don't ask me why I am still in the Game either, could not tell you.
I noticed a whole lot of people just puff, disappeared.
Some really good people, other I could understand. I honestly didn't think I was going to make it after I read Julia's diary the other day.
One thing is for sure, there is some last minute realignment of allegiances going on, especially with the union machines that were loading up the process. And I am union, just not in with the kool kids.

Congratulations Dan (0.00 / 0)
You're one of the few, the proud who made it through the cutting.  If Brian's source is right, it sounds like the caucus conveners wielded the blade fairly heavily cutting people.

From what I understand the deadline for turning in the list of cuts was earlier this week and it's taken a little bit for the CDP to get the list up on its web site (probably due to the sheer volume).  It's not that every day could be a cut day, it's that the campaigns have had weeks to vet these lists and only got them in when the deadline came up.

It's a bad thing, in my opinion, to cut the lists this heavily.  Making sure a declared Clinton supporter was cut, or someone who has given money to Clinton and not to Obama would be wise.  Cutting known troublemakers for reliable volunteers who have spent time and money supporting your candidate is understandable.

It is truly too bad that so many true Obama supporters were cut.  Having eighty candidates in a CD get every single one of their family members and friends involved in the process is good for the candidate and for the Party.  Telling sixty of those people, and all their families "thanks but no thanks" is a far more alarming message.

Thanks Dan K (0.00 / 0)
good to see you again brother.
Like I said, I have survivors guilt, because there are some really strong candidates that got cut.
Honestly, I didn't think I was going to make this cut, then on Sunday, it was going to be a huge hurdle to climb.
Now, still a big hurdle, but not as big.
I had to break the bad news to a couple of good friends tonight. I felt awful.
They should have gotten an email from the campaign or the CDP at least.
I have been very quietly running a stealth campaign, that all of the sudden is getting traction. I am not rejoicing though, I would have preferred to give my speech in front of all delegates.

[ Parent ]
The CDP did send out a blanket email (0.00 / 0)
Telling people to check the lists, but it wasn't specific to the cuts. I think that there just wouldn't have been enough time to get those personalized out to those who were cut between Tuesday and today.

I'm proud to work for Kamala Harris for AG.

[ Parent ]
The CDP was probably... (0.00 / 0)
rushing just to get the final version of the list up on the website without delay.  They've also got to format and arrange the actual ballots for printing before Sunday, which is going to be a huge task if you think about it for a moment.

I'd have liked to seen both campaigns take a moment and try to do some outreach to their supporters that were cut.  The silence so far has been deafening.

This is sad... but let's keep focus... (8.00 / 1)
I had pre-registered at cadem.org to go to the caucus to support several worthy folks in my district.

They're ALL gone: Very deserving people who are members of our county central committee are gone. The person awarded our county's "Young Democrat of the Year" award last year - and a major organizer of our Young Democrats Club - is gone.

OTOH, by doing a search on FundRace.org I was able to find many of the people who remained... as fairly sizable contributers to the campaign.

I can understand that donations like that are a tangible, trackable barometer of support and perhaps even fidelity. However, volunteer effort is critically important as well... and the small money repeat donors that have been the lifeblood of the campaign aren't going to show up on such lists.

I'm just sad that the pool of candidates has been culled so deeply.

But lets keep our eyes on the prize.  Listen while I tell you a tale of my political youth (here's where the screen gets all wavy and the tinkly music plays as we go to a flashback...)

Four years ago I ran to be a Dean Delegate. I wouldn't have shown up on a donors list because my contributions were small (but many) and spread out over time.  State organizers would have had a hard time culling our region's list: there were so many dedicated supporters running to be delegates.

I passed out fliers detailing the work I had done for the candidate... and in the 60 seconds allotted for me to speak I tried to demonstrate why I'd be a good representative on behalf our community and the candidate.  I was shocked - and honored - to end up being the top vote-getter among the men... which would have given me the first seat to Boston for Dean. (The top vote-getter among the women is now our CDP regional director!)

So I had a really proud and happy moment at my caucus, but it ended up being bittersweet after Dean crashed and burned in Iowa and left the race before California. He never broke the 15% threshold needed to send me to the convention...

... by contrast, Barack Obama has an excellent shot of taking this all the way to the White House.

I would have gladly traded in my win at the caucus - and my shot at going to the national convention - for victory in November.  Yes, I know these are not mutually exclusive... but let's keep the focus on what's really important here: a Barack Obama administration.

These opinions are my own, and are not representative of those of any of my employers.

heh, well I was sort of smugly reading this (0.00 / 0)
Well, my guy got cut.

<jaw hits floor>

Rick Relinger, CA-53, the president of UCSD students for Barack Obama, who failed like all his classes last quarter working for Obama 80 hrs a week, not only traveling to all the early primary states but organizing bringing a bunch of other people to go with him. Rick Relinger whose club collected thousands of pledge cards from UCSD students, and mobilized them to the polls.

I'm sort of flabbergasted.

Here's the ONLY POSSIBLE EXPLANATION I can think of--that in what will ultimately go down as the most horrific paperwork snafu in the history of humankind, they sent CDP the people-to-cut list instead of the people-to-keep list. :-)

it was my impression from the lists that most of the students for barack obama peeps managed to save themselves =(

I'm sorry to hear that.

yeah makes no sense (0.00 / 0)
Supposedly UCSD was one of the best organized clubs in the state, as far as number of pledge cards and all that. Rick was on local radio and TV here talking up Obama. He had a Rick for CA-53 Delegate facebook group going that has 229 members!! I'm comprehensively and profoundly bummed out by this. Like I really just CAN'T understand it, unless Obama has promised to fly him to Denver as some kind of uber-VIP thing that is actually a better gig than being a delegate or something.

[ Parent ]
Rick's "resume" from the facebook group (8.00 / 1)
Over the past year I have worked as both the Students for Barack Obama Chapter Coordinator at UCSD and the Region Coordinator for San Diego/Inland Empire. Each week, for the past year, I worked with SFBO state leadership and the California Youth Vote Director to discuss and plan our campaign strategy. At UC San Diego alone, my organization built a voter database of over 1,500 students that we identified as Obama supporters. I personally worked with both the University and the County Registrar of Voters to double the number of on-campus polling stations to ensure that students were not discouraged by lengthy poll lines. Our Get Out the Vote efforts at UCSD resulted in over 75% of voters in on-campus precincts casting their ballots for Senator Obama. Throughout the greater San Diego/Inland Empire region, I mobilized volunteers from Riverside to Irvine to host media events, rallies, and voter outreach efforts at UC, CSU and private universities.

One of the reasons Senator Obama will win this nomination and the presidency is because of the youth vote and I have done as much as anyone to turn out young voters in Southern California. Please vote for me on April 13th.

UPDATE from Rick (0.00 / 0)
He is contacting the campaign, hoping it was an "honest mistake" (his words).

[ Parent ]
that is a true tragedy (0.00 / 0)
Unbelievable.

I mean we all knew the rules, and I knew that in theory this could happen.
I read about it, and I thought no way they would ever do this, but hey, they did.
I can see them using the rules to purge very questionable people, but geez, solid Obama people are getting cut.

[ Parent ]
Do the Republicans have it right? (0.00 / 0)
Republicans don't have this process.  The campaign decides who the delegates are.  Some are disappointed, but at least they don't have this kind of bloodletting.

I didn't sign up to be a delegate but I think (correct me if I'm wrong), the priority is not who is going to Denver but who is going to the White House.

Big blunder (0.00 / 0)
Lots more bad PR coming. Here in the Gold Country 2 en thusiastic Obama supporters had chartered and filled 3 busses for the long ride to Sacramento for our gerrymandered (CD3)district Caucus. They attracted the attention of local press, featured stories are scheduled for Friday in 2 papers. These folks won't accept that this is set in stone. They are going to court tomorrow.Wish them
luck.

I was cut! (8.00 / 1)
I was one of the unfortunate souls (and die-hard Obama supporters) who was cut. Just posted my story over at the Huffington Post.

extra weird? (0.00 / 0)
If they're using something coarse like campaign contributions to decide, instead of "soft" measures like volunteer hours, etc, then how do you explain this---

I just looked up the individuals who made the cut here in CA-50, expecting to see a bunch of $2300, and (at least according to fundrace.org) only 2 of the 10 gave any money, ~$300 and ~$700 (the $700 one, someone at the same address gave $1000 to a different candidate).

I really, really starting to think that they accidentally switched the "cut" and "keep" lists! (no offense dan in sd! I'm only kidding anyway!)

Read this one (0.00 / 0)
The campaigns submit lists of their approved delegate candidates to the party, which then become the official ballot at the caucuses. But determining who should be on those ballots is a delicate job-the campaigns are eager to send loyalists to Denver and drop potential troublemakers, but they want to avoid inadvertently blocking rank-and-file Democrats from pursuing a trip to the convention. They must also meet demographic benchmarks to be seated in Denver

All 5 of those links are to the same AP article by Michael Blood that I linked to in the comment above.

That's a wire story.

Of course, the significance of the AP story is that now most local newspapers will be looking for the local angle -- stories on local delegates who got pruned.

I expect to see a number of stories in Friday and Saturday's editions of various CA newspapers.

I like and respect you. But I have to disagree.

I volunteered my ass off for Obama, and spent the better part of my blogging year this year for Obama and I had ZERO expectation of being a delegate.

Further, when you write that "if the campaign expects more money and time from me"...that just grates on my ears.

I just don't think writing blog posts making threats like that...especially when we clearly don't have all the information...does anybody any good.

The more I'm learning this sounds like one of those situations that had no easy outcome.

The progressive response to stuff like this is to ask how we could have done it better.

I get frustrated reading blog posts that seem to accuse before all the facts and factors are in.

But with a campaign in which so much strength comes from the lack of top-down control and from the promise of empowerment, this knocks the wind out of a lot of sails, fairly or not.

[ Parent ]
Here's the thing (8.00 / 2)
I had no expectation of becoming a delegate. I knew I wasn't going to win, and that's fine. However, I do think I deserve an explanation from the campaign why I couldn't at least give my one minute speech. Would an hour at that meeting really have been that bad of a thing?

I really think they just messed this one up.  Sure, it would have taken some time and planning to do the longer and larger meetings. But how much of a shot would a rogue Clinton supporter really have had to win a delegate seat in the Obama caucus? The system would have worked just fine to make sure people who worked hard for Obama would have been delegates. The campaign's pruning was unnecessary, and it just made people who had worked hard for the campaign upset. I just don't see the upside of pruning so heavily.

I'll admit, that, yeah, I was pretty pissed when I wrote that and I probably don't mean it. I know that I'll break down and work my ass off for whomever becomes the Democratic nominee because the alternative is too horrible to imagine. But for a campaign that prides itself for activating new voters, this doesn't seem all that on message.

I'm proud to work for Kamala Harris for AG.

Demographic Goals?? (8.00 / 1)
I'm wondering if the Obama camp purged some people due to achieving some diversity goals.  Here's why:

I'm running on a slate with two candidates -- Myrna Melgar and Clemetine Clarke -- for San Francisco.  Myrna and I made the cut, but Clemetine did not.

If "loyalty" and "hard work" were the barometer, such a decision makes no sense.  Clemetine is a die-hard Obama supporter, and she has worked the hardest among the three of us.

But it's possible she was removed because they already have too many African-American candidates. With the Obama campaign generating a lot of excitement in the black community, I expect that a historically high number have filed to run.  I also noticed that London Breed, who is also a black woman in San Francisco, was likewise removed from the list.

Meanwhile, as we all know, the Obama campaign has not done well among Latinos -- which could explain why Myrna made the cut.  Every Latino candidate from San Francisco was spared, except for one who was a known Clinton supporter (and thank God they got rid of her for that reason!)

Still, I think the Obama campaign should fess up and explain that to us -- if only privately -- if the real reason for doing so was simply fitting some demographic goals.

And besides, it wouldn't explain why I was spared -- but Brian Leubitz was cut.  We're both gay white males, we're both bloggers, we're both the same age, and we're both staunch Obama suppoters.

If the Obama campaign is reading this, please e-mail me at phogarth@mac.com

Let's Cool The Rhetoric (0.00 / 0)
I had a horse in this race, his name was John Edwards.  He bowed out and so did any hope of my going to Denver.  Although I voted for Obama I did not campaign for him in any way or send him money.  In my opinion it would be the height of arrogance on my part to think I would best someone in a delegate election who slugged it out with the Obama campaign from the git go.  In trying to practice empathy I imagine for a moment if things had turned out different and it was Edwards and Clinton facing off on Sunday.  I would be piqued to say the least that a bunch of folks from the Obama camp were jumping on at the last minute.

That is in no way to denigrate those who may have been Edwards supporters and voted for Obama and even endorsed him and now seek to be a delegate.  I know several of them and would prefer to see them with their progressive values participating in the national convention.  But it didn't work out that way.  It's ok to be disappointed but let's tone down the rhetoric a bit.

Ultimately, Obama and his folks need us and the fact is we need them.  Whatever happens on the national scene, our work was and always will be on the local and state scene.  We change it here as we are beginning to, and the nation will follow.

Cheers,
