Environmentalists Livid at Joe Nation

by: Bob Brigham

Sun Jun 01, 2008 at 09:45:14 AM PDT

Disclosure, I'm proud to do some work for Mark Leno

From a press release:

Sierra Club protests deceptive Joe Nation campaign mailers
Illegal use of Sierra Club logo is trademark infringement

SAN FRANCISCO. May 31, 2008 - The Sierra Club has condemned deceptive campaign mailers for Joe Nation that falsely imply Sierra Club endorsement of Mr. Nation for State Senate District 3 in next Tuesday's election. The Sierra Club also has protested the unauthorized, illegal use of its logo on campaign literature promoting Mr. Nation. The Sierra Club is demanding that these unethical and illegal activities cease immediately.

Resorting to deception usually belies weakness. Full release after the jump.

Bay Area Political Chair John Rizzo spoke with Mr. Nation to inform him of the Sierra Club's objections to the misleading mailer pieces.

Several of the mailers include the Sierra Club in a list of apparent endorsing organizations. They also falsely list the League of Conservation Voters (LCV) as supporting Nation. Another mailer uses the Sierra Club and LCV logos under the headline "You can't get any greener than Joe Nation."

Neither the Sierra Club nor the LCV has endorsed Joe Nation. The Sierra Club does not support Mr. Nation's candidacy, and in April, presented incumbent Senator Carole Migden with the San Francisco Bay Chapter Environmental Stewardship Award. The League of Conservation Voters has endorsed Senator Migden, not Joe Nation.

The Nation campaign and several independent expenditures are putting out the deceptive material, which also falsely imply support of other organizations that have endorsed Mr. Nation's opponents. The mailers that use the Sierra Club logo are paid for by a Sacramento-based, corporate-funded independent expenditure, Californians for Balance & Fairness in the Civil Justice System.

Mr. Nation and his supporters are sending the false messages in an attempt to deceive the public. The Sierra Club believes that such deceptive tactics violate at least the spirit of the California campaign practices laws. The Sierra Club has contacted the FPPC and is considering filing a complaint.

The Sierra Club logo is a registered trademark of the Sierra Club. The unauthorized reproduction of the Sierra Club logo is infringement on that trademark and is protected as such under the law.

The Sierra Club is America's oldest and largest environmental group. (http://www.sierraclub.org) The San Francisco Bay Chapter represents 40,000 members in San Francisco, Marin, Alameda, and Contra Costa Counties. (http://sanfranciscobay.sierraclub.org/chapter/chapter_home.asp)

coming to Migden's defense? (0.00 / 0)
Yeah, a little odd but this is turning into the year of deceptive mailers in San Francisco which is really, really, uncool.

Remedies (0.00 / 0)
There need to be real remedies for this type of voter fraud.

Nation, Sierra Club Leno & gambling (0.00 / 0)
I've received dozens of Joe Nation mailers - another batch just within the last few days.  I looked through all the mailers I have from Nation, and none of them state that the Sierra Club endorses him.

While Nation was in the state assembly, the Sierra Club gave him a 100% rating (2005), and that's all his mailers say.  There's no tiny print or deceptive wording - it's right up front, crystal clear.

So the Sierra Club gave him 100% in 2005, which means they liked him as a legislator.  That's a good thing.

Nation also has a lifetime rating of 100% from the CA League of COnservation Voters - and they aren't denying that.  Again, the literature never says or implies and endorsement.

Every politician makes mention of his/her past achievements  What's wrong with that.  I won't comment on use of logos, but I don't think his campaign literature is deceptive on this point.

Give it up Bob!  You're trying too hard!!

BTW, we love Joe up here in Sonoma COunty.  He's the only one who's even going to try to stop the massive Indian casino they want to build in ROhnert Park.  Leno says there's nothing that can be done. Eight months after she took office, Migden still didn't know that Rohnert Park was in her district.  We're tired of San Francisco politicians winning this seat, then ignoring their Sonoma COunty constituents.

Also, most of Leno's contributors are PACS, including real Estate and Construction PACs.  He also received money this election from 5 or 6 card rooms, a race track and the Pechanga tribe - one of the largest tribal casinos in the state.  No wonder he says there's nothing that can be done to stop a casino! Over 80% of Nation's donations are from private individuals, and no money from gambling interests at all.

Shocking, Bob Brigham misleads again. (0.00 / 0)
Does the $3000 a month you get paid by Mark inhibit your ability to actually tell the whole truth?  That the mailer is an IE and not paid for by Nation?

What part of the post (0.00 / 0)
Is inaccurate?

last minute mailers are nothing new (0.00 / 0)
by the time anyone sees 'em and reports it, it's really too late. Plus, try as we might, you can't blame a candidate for the idiotic actions of an IE. Trust me, I've done assembly races and there is nothing worse than having your "friends" pump out crappy mail.

Which is why I always try and intercept mailers and post 'em on line at my site, but this year I got NOTHING, since I live in the Sunset and not a thing for DCCC folks even though I'm a Democratic primary voter.

But this is nothing new. Heck, Chris "Maximum Leader" Daly is pumping out deceptive mailers too. And when confronted, uses his trademarked Middle Finger Salute to anyone who dares question him as the one True Leader of Progressives Everywhere.

Class act, that guy. And I used to be one of his biggest fans, too!

Hmmm... (0.00 / 0)
None of the mailers I received had them either.

Were Joe to have really accomplished anything for Marin, he wouldn't need to boost logos or hound people for endorsements. Same goes for the self-proclamation of "Climate Expert".
