Get Used to These Numbers: Ballot Measures Assigned

by: Julia Rosen

Fri Jun 27, 2008 at 10:22:15 AM PDT

Sec. Bowen just announced that she has assigned numbers for the boatload of initiatives that will be on the ballot in November.

So get used to these numbers.  You are going to be seeing these a lot on this website, your TV screen and your mailbox.  We need to refine the shorthand for these initiatives.  This admittedly a quick pass at it.  The framing needs to be tweaked and I am sure there will be some argument within the progressive left about these initiatives.

Prop. 1 High Speed Rail

Prop 2 Treatment of Farm Animals

Prop 3 Children's Hospital Bond

Prop 4 Parental Notification

Prop 5 Parole and Rehab of Nonviolent Offenders

Prop 6 Tough on Crime

Prop 7 Renewable Energy

Prop 8 Take Away Marriage Equality

Prop 9 Victims Rights and Parole

Prop 10 Alternative Fuels and Renewable Energy Bonds

Prop 11 Redistricting

Going Back to 1, huh. Interesting choice to go from 99 back down to 1. At least we don't have a Prop 13 this time. I suppose that will be in 2010.

I'm proud to work for Kamala Harris for AG.

Yep (0.00 / 0)
Well we had 98 this year.  I think we may get up to 13 for November.

There are going to be a lot of voters who just get fed up with everything and vote no given all of these initiatives they are being asked to weigh in on.

Indeed (0.00 / 0)
That's going to be a big obstacle for us HSR...or should I say, Yes on 1 advocates.

The "default no" is a poor approach to politics, more often than not serving right-wing interests. If folks don't like all the initiatives, they should leave that section blank.

You can check out any time you like but you can never leave

Don't tell that to Markos (0.00 / 0)
Every year, he posts a few "No on all California intiatives" smackdowns on dkos, regardless of the merit of some initiatives.

Yup (0.00 / 0)
I dread his inevitable post this year on that topic.

It doesn't surprise me that he basically endorses an ignorant unilateral disarmament approach to the initiatives.

I think we can now safely use the word (0.00 / 0)

.........'ignorant' every time The Commander's name comes up.

He's more Republican every year so that does make some sense they being the party of ignorance.

of getting a ton of these initiatives up every election, both voting asnd not voting can serve their interests. people have to figure out what's good, what's bad, and what's well-intended but maybe not such a good idea.

no short cut. a lot of people google props in the weeks before elections, which is why getting an online argument established early, and properly tagging it, is so key.

other than friends, family and people googling shave baby head" (long story), i'd say it's where most of my traffic comes from.

All aboard! (0.00 / 0)
All aboard the #1 Express! Now leaving, gate 1! The express train to the future....vote YES on 1!

Yeah, it's silly, but I like it.

After 7+ years of Bush, we are all suffering from "accelerated decrepitude."

As I understand it (8.00 / 2)
The plan is to reset every 10 years. We used to reset every 20 years (1978-1998) but at some point that was changed.

Don't hate - no on 8!

You can check out any time you like but you can never leave

"No"... I think I've got a better version... (0.00 / 0)
No on 8. No on Hate.

(double No's branding the prop and the hate)
