Chairman Waxman

by: David Dayen

Thu Nov 20, 2008 at 08:01:39 AM PST

I guess Henry Waxman, a key ally to Nancy Pelosi, wouldn't have made the move to unseat John Dingell if he didn't count the votes.

Rep. Henry Waxman (Calif.) has ousted Energy and Commerce Chairman John Dingell (Mich.), as Democratic lawmakers voted 137-122 Thursday morning to hand the gavel of the powerhouse panel to its second-ranking member.

This, more than anything, could be the biggest change in the federal government in 2009 and beyond.  Waxman's Safe Climate Act sets the targets needed to mitigate the worst effects of global warming.  It now becomes the working document in the House for anti-global warming legislation.  And his constituency doesn't include a major polluting industry.

From a policy standpoint, it's a major progressive victory.

This is great news! (0.00 / 0)
I love that the old school players were saying this was some sort of quixotic attempt by Waxman, but he knew what he was doing.

Good Work Chairman Waxman!

I'm proud to work for Kamala Harris for AG.

Bloomberg Article (8.00 / 1)
Here's a Bloomberg Article about Waxman's victory:

Mixed blessing, but mostly good (0.00 / 0)
Energy and Commerce has telecommunications as an area of jurisdiction.  Waxman is very bad on IP issues, where he is entirely subservient to the special interests in his district -- the RIAA, MPAA, etc.

Motor Trend (0.00 / 0)
The Bloggers at Motor Trend are not happy at all:

You know that it's impossible, or at least a huge economic hardship, to require automakers to build separate models for California and the states that typically mimic its emissions standards. Even Toyota can't build enough hybrids to have that as their sole model lineup in the Golden State. With AB 1493, California is trying to write the rule for all 50 states.

Anyway, as chairman of Energy & Commerce, Waxman's lead issues are energy, climate change and health care. The latter issue could occupy much of Waxman's time, if he tried to do something about that mess. As for climate change, perhaps he should consider how the overbuilding, until last year, of condos and McMansions is affecting California's environment (and the rest of the nation). And it's time to pay attention to the amount of CO2 spewed into the atmosphere from powering up the computers and 52-inch flat-screen TVs we use. It is a new day, after all.

The car people are really pissed about this, but the fact is that if we are to face the challenges we are goiong to have to stop pretending that they don't exist.  Sure, the carmakers are important, but they are failing because during the past few good years they underperformed with their big hulking lineup. You want to prosper in the new economy? Well start acting like you care about the concerns of the new economy.

And, btw, how long does it take to actually get the electric car out the door. And how much time and money would the Big 3 have saved if they had actually done the work instead of scrapping it all during the 90s?

I'm proud to work for Kamala Harris for AG.

that's awesome (0.00 / 0)
i wonder if obama was working this one from the inside, to grease the skids on getting some real global warming legislation moving.
