{"id":10240,"date":"2009-10-09T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2009-10-09T04:00:00","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2009-10-09T00:55:12","modified_gmt":"2009-10-09T00:55:12","slug":"october-8-open-thread","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/calitics.com\/index.php\/2009\/10\/09\/october-8-open-thread\/","title":{"rendered":"October 8 Open Thread"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Links:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 The Arnold-Ammiano dustup got some coverage on the websites of the <a href=\"http:\/\/latimesblogs.latimes.com\/lanow\/2009\/10\/you-lie-shouted-at-schwarzenegger-when-he-drops-in-on-democratic-fundraiser.html\">LA Times<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/cgi-bin\/blogs\/nov05election\/index?\">SF Chronicle<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Joel Anderson, a Republican Assemblyman from the Eastern San Diego &#8216;burbs, is being <a href=\"http:\/\/www3.signonsandiego.com\/stories\/2009\/oct\/08\/inquiry-opens-anderson-finances\/?uniontrib\">investigated for political money laungering<\/a>. Apparently his MO is to donate large sums of money to Northern California County Central Committees, and get a slightly smaller sum of money in return a few weeks later in a more useful account. Pretty sweet how that works.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 A couple days ago, the LA Times <a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/news\/local\/la-me-deadbeat-state6-2009oct06,0,6309986.story?track=rss\">reported<\/a> about how California has paid $8 million dollars in penalties and late fees to vendors, money that didn&#8217;t need to be spent. &nbsp;There&#8217;s always going to be a certain leakage in any bureaucracy, and this is pennies in the overall scheme of things, but there are steps the government could take to prevent this &#8211; mainly to pass a budget on time, which is responsible for the bulk of these payments. &nbsp;I would add that the Legislature and the Governor routinely gives away hundreds of times this amount in corporate welfare every year, yet that story doesn&#8217;t make the papers.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Joe Garofoli has a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/cgi-bin\/article.cgi?f=\/c\/a\/2009\/10\/07\/MNJ71A0AJ9.DTL&#038;feed=rss.news\">story in the SF Chronicle<\/a> about Maine&#8217;s Question 1 in the context of Prop 8 here in California. &nbsp;There are many &#8220;coincidences&#8221; between the two campaigns.
