Seems about right"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Let&#8217;s sum up the prison situation as it stands as quickly as possible. A federal court panel of three judges has ruled that the state <a href=\"https:\/\/calitics.com\/diary\/9772\/federal-judges-order-california-to-reduce-prison-population-by-40000\">must reduce its prison population by 44,000<\/a>. The Governor&#8217;s current plan gets <a href=\"https:\/\/calitics.com\/diary\/10098\/the-continued-defense-of-the-indefensible\">nowhere near that goal<\/a>, and the deadline has passed.<\/p>\n<p>Generally, courts don&#8217;t take well to being blown off. And attorneys for the inmates know these sorts of things:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The inmates have said prison overcrowding violates their rights to adequate medical and mental health care. Their lawyers told the federal judges that the state had shown &#8220;utter contempt&#8221; for the judges&#8217; orders.
