Maldonado is nervously checking his watch and fidgeting, it&#8217;s clearly his big day. Are the votes there?<\/p>\n<p>Maldonado did pretty well in yesterday&#8217;s Assembly Rules Committee hearing. He reiterated his <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.kqed.org\/capitalnotes\/2010\/04\/21\/t-ridge-not-so-fast-says-maldo\/\">opposition to the Tranquillon Ridge offshore oil drilling project<\/a> and said he <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/KQED_CapNotes\/status\/12591535930\">&#8220;has a problem with&#8221;<\/a> CSU Stanislaus not revealing Sarah Palin&#8217;s speaking fee.<\/p>\n<p>Speaker John A. P\u00e9rez is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sacbee.com\/static\/weblogs\/capitolalertlatest\/2010\/04\/maldonado-prez.html\">apparently a &#8220;yes&#8221; vote<\/a> on Maldonado. Will it be enough to get him confirmed, and enable Democrats to win a 2\/3rds majority?<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ll find out in a few minutes. Republicans are still in caucus &#8211; are they getting cold feet?<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;Speaker P\u00e9rez presiding now, things starting to get underway. He runs an efficient session.<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;Charles Calderon moving motion to approve the nomination. Calderon was a no vote in February.<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;Chuck DeVore rises to oppose. Remember people, if DeVore is against something, it&#8217;s generally a good idea to be for it.<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;Anthony Adams rises to support Maldonado, and reminds Californians that Reagan supported big tax increases too.<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;To some degree we&#8217;re seeing Assemblymembers screwing with each other &#8211; Diane Harkey, an Orange County Republican, says she was going to vote no until she heard Pedro Nava speak against Maldonado, so now she&#8217;s going to vote yes. However. Lori Salda\u00f1a is making a very principled case against the confirmation. <b>UPDATE:<\/b> Salda\u00f1a wound up voting yes. <b>UPDATE 2:<\/b> Salda\u00f1a&#8217;s staff now says <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/CapitolAlert\/status\/12656914893\">she switched to no<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Here we go with the vote&#8230;.and Maldo&#8217;s got it. 51-17.<\/p>\n<p>The Assembly has indeed confirmed Abel Maldonado, 51-17, with very little suspense &#8211; totally unlike the February vote.
