{"id":12588,"date":"2010-09-26T02:28:18","date_gmt":"2010-09-26T02:28:18","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2010-09-26T02:28:18","modified_gmt":"2010-09-26T02:28:18","slug":"3-quick-suggestions-to-build-on-colberts-effort-to-help-farmworkers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/calitics.com\/index.php\/2010\/09\/26\/3-quick-suggestions-to-build-on-colberts-effort-to-help-farmworkers\/","title":{"rendered":"3 Quick Suggestions to Build on Colbert&#8217;s Effort to Help Farmworkers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ll try to make this short. &nbsp;Stephen Colbert has made the media focus on the plight of farmworkers who are abused because they have no rights, and done this better than anyone else for a really long time. &nbsp;You&#8217;ve probably seen his testimony delivered &#8220;in character&#8221;:<\/p>\n<p><object width=\"480\" height=\"385\"><param name=\"movie\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/lcttDlJd98k?fs=1&#038;hl=en_US\"><\/param><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\"><\/param><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\"><\/param><\/object><\/p>\n<p>In fact, as Dave Dayen has pointed out (BTW, hats off to DD for being <a href=\"http:\/\/news.firedoglake.com\/2010\/09\/24\/rep-judy-chu-the-lone-day-mr-colbert-spent-in-the-fields-gave-him-a-better-understanding-of-this-issue-than-many-people-covering-this-story\/\">all<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/news.firedoglake.com\/2010\/09\/24\/colbert-gives-more-attention-to-farmworkers-struggle-than-any-reporter-in-half-a-century\/\">over<\/a> this story) the most powerful testimony was at the end of the hearing, when <a href=\"http:\/\/news.firedoglake.com\/2010\/09\/24\/colbert-gives-more-attention-to-farmworkers-struggle-than-any-reporter-in-half-a-century\/\">answering<\/a> the questions of Representative Judy Chu of California.<\/p>\n<p>Some concern trolls are suggesting that what Zoe Lofgren has done by bringing him to testify in Congress &#8211; and his involvement in the Take My Job effort by the United Farm Workers in the first place &#8211; has been a setback to the effort to help the farmworkers. &nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Colbert has moved me enough to see what I could do to help. &nbsp;Perhaps you all have some better ideas, but here are the ones that occur to me:<\/p>\n<p>#1 &#8211; Sign the <a href=\"http:\/\/action.ufw.org\/page\/s\/colbert92410?source=web\">UFW pledge<\/a> to support the AgJobs bill (HR 2414), which is expected to allow current undocumented farm workers already in the United States a path to earn legal status.<\/p>\n<p>#2 &#8211; Figure out if your representative in the House is a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.opencongress.org\/bill\/111-h2414\/show\">co-sponsor<\/a>, and ask them to become one if they are not. &nbsp;(For example, my representative Jane Harman is not currently one of the 63 co-sponsors)<\/p>\n<p>#3 &#8211; Give a little <a href=\"https:\/\/secure.ufw.org\/page\/contribute\/sparechange?source=web1\">money<\/a> to the UFW to help them support migrant farm workers. &nbsp;And if you have your donation end in $.01, they will know that it&#8217;s a donation inspired by Colbert. &nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>#4 &#8211; any suggestions?
