{"id":13121,"date":"2011-02-08T23:03:34","date_gmt":"2011-02-08T23:03:34","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2011-02-16T18:14:07","modified_gmt":"2011-02-16T18:14:07","slug":"completely-arbitrary-panelless-death-panels","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/calitics.com\/index.php\/2011\/02\/08\/completely-arbitrary-panelless-death-panels\/","title":{"rendered":"Completely Arbitrary Panel-less Death Panels?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One of the more astonishing proposals of the Governor&#8217;s budget cuts was a &#8220;10 appointment maximum&#8221; for Medi-Cal patients. <\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In an effort to close the state budget gap, California health officials are proposing a &#8220;hard cap&#8221; of 10 medical visits per year for needy patients who rely on the Medi-Cal program for health care.<\/p>\n<p>Some patients and health advocates are calling the strategy a &#8220;death sentence&#8221; for patients who need dialysis treatments to clean their blood or chemotherapy to rid them of cancer. The bipartisan(sic) Legislative Analyst&#8217;s Office <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lao.ca.gov\/laoapp\/budgetlist\/PublicSearch.aspx?PolicyAreaNum=52&amp;Department_Number=-1&amp;KeyCol=293&amp;Yr=2011\" target=\"_blank\">recommended a cap that also grants exemptions<\/a> for certain services or conditions.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ebudget.ca.gov\/pdf\/BudgetSummary\/HealthandHumanServices.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">The 10-visit cap (PDF)<\/a>, estimated to save the state $200 million a year, would affect the 10 percent of California patients who rely most heavily on the Medi-Cal program to meet their medical needs.
