{"id":13718,"date":"2011-07-26T18:30:00","date_gmt":"2011-07-26T18:30:00","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2011-07-26T19:19:09","modified_gmt":"2011-07-26T19:19:09","slug":"brown-nominates-goodwin-liu-to-replace-carlos-moreno","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/calitics.com\/index.php\/2011\/07\/26\/brown-nominates-goodwin-liu-to-replace-carlos-moreno\/","title":{"rendered":"Brown Nominates Goodwin Liu to Replace Carlos Moreno"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/29370912@N04\/5097051501\/\" title=\"Jorde Symposium 2010 by Berkeley Law, on Flickr\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4126\/5097051501_6f777f49d8_m.jpg\" width=\"160\" height=\"240\" alt=\"Jorde Symposium 2010\" align=right><\/a><i>Liu will have big shoes to fill<\/i><\/p>\n<p>by Brian Leubitz<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/calitics.com\/diary\/13015\/justice-carlos-moreno-to-retire\">news of Carlos Moreno&#8217;s retirement earlier this year<\/a> was not entirely surprising, yet it did leave a big hole on the California Supreme Court. &nbsp;Moreno was the only Justice appointed by a Democrat, and while the Court was fairly moderate on social issues (see marriage equality 1 and 2), it often tilted to the Right on economic issues.<\/p>\n<p>Moreno was a voice that sought fairness and a standard of law that imposed rights and duties on corporations just as it did on ordinary citizens. &nbsp;His strength of character and perseverance were essential to building a reasonable consensus on the court. &nbsp;Jerry had quite the shoes to fill when Moreno announced his retirement.<\/p>\n<p>There was a big push for a Latino, and while that goal was not achieved, the appointment of Goodwin Liu will fill many other goals for the Court.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Gov. Jerry Brown nominated UC Berkeley law professor Goodwin Liu to the California Supreme Court Tuesday, giving the state high court a fourth Asian justice and a collegial liberal who is likely to be strongly supportive of civil rights.<\/p>\n<p>Liu was President Obama&#8217;s pick for a seat on the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, but he failed to garner enough Republican support. Liu, 40, has never been a judge, but his colleagues at Berkeley, including conservatives, strongly endorsed him for the position.(<a href=\"http:\/\/latimesblogs.latimes.com\/lanow\/2011\/07\/brown-nominates-berkeley-professor-goodwin-liu-to-california-supreme-court.html\">LA Times<\/a>)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Liu will be a strong voice for ordinary Californians on the Court.
