{"id":13969,"date":"2011-10-26T18:57:09","date_gmt":"2011-10-26T18:57:09","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2011-10-26T18:57:09","modified_gmt":"2011-10-26T18:57:09","slug":"the-new-petty-by-timothy-hodson","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/calitics.com\/index.php\/2011\/10\/26\/the-new-petty-by-timothy-hodson\/","title":{"rendered":"The New Petty by Timothy Hodson"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><i>Timothy Hodson, the former director of the Center for California Studies at California State University &#8211; Sacramento, passed away yesterday. &nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sacbee.com\/2011\/10\/25\/4006850\/the-new-petty.html#ixzz1buK292MA\">The Bee published his poem<\/a> as a request from his friends and family. &nbsp;And, well, we could use a little more poetry in politics. &nbsp;<\/i><\/p>\n<p>by Timothy Hodson <\/p>\n<p><center><b>The New Petty<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Here at our sun washed, Pacific gates,<br \/>\n<br \/>Faced with the realities of intercontinental and oceanic fates<br \/>\n<br \/>Want-to-be leaders eschew matching mountains and instead embrace<br \/>\n<br \/>Tired, poor, meaningless clich\u00e9s unworthy of our people and state.<\/p>\n<p>On the right, the pride of Harvard MBAs and Silicon Valley entrepreneurs and free marketers spends $100 million to decry waste fraud and abuse.<\/p>\n<p>No matter if the numbers don&#8217;t pencil out; the focus groups did.<br \/>\n<br \/>No matter if every governor since 1850 has had the power<br \/>\n<br \/>to zap waste and veto fraud.<br \/>\n<br \/>No matter if the solution doesn&#8217;t match the problem<br \/>\n<br \/>or the answer is more like Pong than Avatar;<br \/>\n<br \/>Damn it polls well!<\/p>\n<p>On the left, the sage of experience, the master of nuance and complexity,<br \/>\n<br \/>he who understands consumer demand in Sichuan<br \/>\n<br \/>impacts state revenues,<br \/>\n<br \/>his wisdom, age and understanding raises up with a pitiable cry<br \/>\n<br \/>all the more pathetic for echoing barren fiats of rightist imagination:<br \/>\n<br \/>It will only create a new bureaucracy.<br \/>\n<br \/>This is brilliance? This is new thinking? Somewhere ignatian logic rolls.<\/p>\n<p>I would sincerely like to know when our putative leaders<br \/>\n<br \/>decided that California was puny.<br \/>\n<br \/>Petty. Not worth serious thought or effort.
