When a surcharge is a discount."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In response to our <a href=\"http:\/\/stopthesurcharge.consumerwatchdogcampaign.org\/video\/consumer-alert-big-lies-behind-insurer-backed-prop-33-tv-ads\">Consumer Alert<\/a> exposing the Prop 33 campaign for using paid campaign employees in their TV ads, the insurance industry-backed Proposition 33 campaign issued a statement to the LA Times Opinion <a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/news\/opinion\/opinion-la\/la-ol-proposition-33-backers-fast-and-loose-with-truth-20121002,0,862325.story\">blog<\/a> &#8211; excerpts below &#8211; stating that &#8220;the two women in their ads were simply volunteering their stories in support of the effort to pass Proposition 33.&#8221; &nbsp;That disingenuous response begs the question:<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Is a Paid Employee a Volunteer? I guess if you can call charging people more for their auto insurance simply for not driving a &#8220;discount,&#8221; then why not call an employee a volunteer?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>California election law requires campaigns that use paid spokespeople in their ads disclose this within the ad. &nbsp;Nowhere in these ads do the proponents disclose that the two women work for the PR firm that is being paid over half a million dollars to run the Yes on 33 campaign. &nbsp;That is why we <a href=\"http:\/\/stopthesurcharge.consumerwatchdogcampaign.org\/newsrelease\/prop-33-tv-ads-caught-big-lie-paid-spokespeople-pose-%E2%80%9Creal-drivers%E2%80%9D\">filed an official complaint<\/a> with the California Fair Political Practices Commission asking them to investigate the ads for violating election law.<\/p>\n<p>If you feel that the public has a right to know when the people in campaign ads are being paid for their opinions, then watch our Consumer Alert and <a href=\"http:\/\/stopthesurcharge.consumerwatchdogcampaign.org\/video\/consumer-alert-big-lies-behind-insurer-backed-prop-33-tv-ads\">share<\/a> with your friends and networks to help us combat these insurance-industry lies.<\/p>\n<p><object width=\"420\" height=\"315\"><param name=\"movie\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/Hha8mh2ff9o?version=3&#038;hl=en_US&#038;rel=0\"><\/param><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\"><\/param><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\"><\/param><\/object><\/p>\n<p>Excepts from the:<br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"http:\/\/s768.photobucket.com\/albums\/xx322\/consumerwatchdog\/?action=view\u00a4t=latimes-opinion.png\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i768.photobucket.com\/albums\/xx322\/consumerwatchdog\/latimes-opinion.png\" border=\"0\" height=\"97\" width=\"425\" alt=\"Photobucket\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>October 3, 2012<\/em><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\n<br \/>&#8220;Marketplace argues that it didn&#8217;t violate the law, and that may be technically correct.
