Mr. Allen&#8217;s opponent is Marc Levine, a fellow Democrat.<\/p>\n<p>In the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aroundthecapitol.com\/districts\/AD50\/\">50th Assembly district<\/a> (Santa Monica, D+33), Sacramento Democrats <a href=\"http:\/\/cal-access.sos.ca.gov\/Campaign\/Committees\/Detail.aspx?id=1334532&amp;session=2011\">donated $601K to Assemblywoman Betsy Butler<\/a>, who <a href=\"http:\/\/veniceforchange.blogspot.com\/2011\/09\/south-bay-constituents-unhappy-betsy.html\">moved north<\/a> to the Democratic stronghold after redistricting meant she&#8217;d have to run in the new, more conservative <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aroundthecapitol.com\/districts\/AD66\/\">66th Assembly district<\/a> (Torrance, D+3). Like Allen, Butler is running against Democratic challenger (Santa Monica Mayor, Richard Bloom).<\/p>\n<p>In the South Bay, Torrance School Board member <a href=\"http:\/\/cal-access.sos.ca.gov\/Campaign\/Committees\/Detail.aspx?id=1341558&amp;session=2011&amp;psort=NAME&amp;view=received&amp;type=monetary\">Al Muratsuchi<\/a> became the Democratic candidate for AD66 after Betsy Butler left the district.&nbsp; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailybreeze.com\/news\/ci_19343367\">Election experts consider the race highly competitive for Republicans<\/a>, giving them the best opportunity in two decades to pick up a seat in that area. <\/p>\n<p>Before the June primary, few Sacramento Democrats, including both John Perez and Betsy Butler <a href=\"http:\/\/cal-access.sos.ca.gov\/Campaign\/Committees\/Detail.aspx?id=1341558&amp;session=2011&amp;psort=NAME&amp;view=received&amp;type=monetary\">had made any financial contributions to Muratsuchi<\/a>, forcing the candidate to <a href=\"http:\/\/cal-access.sos.ca.gov\/Campaign\/Committees\/Detail.aspx?id=1341558&amp;session=2011&amp;view=received&amp;type=loan\">loan his campaign $45,000<\/a> to defend the new South Bay Assembly seat against two Tea Party candidates, Nathan Mintz, <a href=\"http:\/\/manhattanbeach.patch.com\/articles\/betsy-butlers-narrow-margin-over-mintz-grows-to-victory\">who ran and lost a close race against Butler in 2010<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.craighuey.com\/\">Craig Huey<\/a>, who ran an unsuccessful <a href=\"http:\/\/articles.latimes.com\/2011\/may\/07\/local\/la-me-campaign-money-20110507\">$500,000 self-financed congressional campaign<\/a> against Janice Hahn last year.<\/p>\n<p>After the June primary however, Sacramento finally began investing in Muratsuchi&#8217;s campaign, donating $967K to help defeat opponent Craig Huey. Clearly, a huge improvement, but will it be enough? The most recent campaign finance reports show Muratsuchi and Huey are <a href=\"http:\/\/cal-access.sos.ca.gov\/Campaign\/Candidates\/Detail.aspx?id=1342938\">almost dead even in the amount of cash they have on hand.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Eric Bauman, Vice-Chair of the California Democratic Party, says the AD66 race is the party&#8217;s &#8220;number one&#8221; priority. And if you compare these three races in isolation, that statement is correct.<\/p>\n<p>The bigger problem, however, is Perez and Sacramento Democrats aren&#8217;t making <i>a two-thirds majority <\/i>their &#8220;number one&#8221; priority at all.
