Schwarzenegger is deferring to the federal court on Prop 8<\/a>. The opinion doesn&#8217;t really have much impact on the case, but it&#8217;s noteworthy nonetheless.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 It&#8217;s been clear from here in Los Angeles that Antonio Villaraigosa wasn&#8217;t running for Governor, but <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sacbee.com\/static\/weblogs\/capitolalertlatest\/023114.html?mi_rss=Capitol%20Alert\">his election as second VP at the US Conference of Mayors<\/a> almost clinches it. &nbsp;Villaraigosa would be in line for the Presidency of the organization in 2011 &#8211; if he stuck around as LA Mayor. &nbsp;And he probably wouldn&#8217;t run for this office if he wasn&#8217;t.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 From the Wow department, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ibabuzz.com\/politics\/2009\/06\/17\/prop-36-funding-cut-means-drug-defendants-walk\/\">Josh Richman has a story on Prop 36<\/a> today. Essentially, cuts to Prop 36 funding will deny treatment to eligible offenders. However, they can&#8217;t be forced to prison, so they just move along back into the same environment that created the problems in the first place.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 One budget cut I didn&#8217;t notice in the Democrats&#8217; version was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.californiaprogressreport.com\/2009\/06\/enterprise_zone.html\">phasing out the completely failed enterprise zone program<\/a>, which would save $500 million dollars, not bad for one program.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 We&#8217;re actually down an Assembly seat right now, and the Secretary of State <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sacbee.com\/static\/weblogs\/capitolalertlatest\/023174.html?mi_rss=Capitol%20Alert\">set a date<\/a> for the election to replace Curren Price. &nbsp;The primary would take place September 1, and if nobody wins a majority, the general election would be November 3.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Charter schools <a href=\"http:\/\/credo.stanford.edu\/\">do not provide the performance results<\/a> that advocates claim? &nbsp;Math results are significantly lower in charter schools than public schools? &nbsp;Get out of town!<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 There are rumors that the Fremont NUMMI plant, a joint project of Toyota and GM, may make <a href=\"http:\/\/www.insidebayarea.com\/oaklandtribune\/localnews\/ci_12607940?source=rss\">the Toyota Prius<\/a>. Well, they say <a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/business\/la-fi-cal-econ18-2009jun18,0,6354615.story\">that manufacturing will be part of California&#8217;s recovery<\/a>, so maybe this is the start of something.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 A group of lobbyists were <a href=\"http:\/\/www.insidebayarea.com\/oaklandtribune\/localnews\/ci_12601284\">booted from court<\/a> in their attempt to remove the clean money initiative from the ballot in June 2010. If it passes, the SoS election in 2014 will be a clean money election and would be paid for by a tax on lobbyists.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Is this the first actual good economic news I&#8217;ve seen in a while? &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.calculatedriskblog.com\/2009\/06\/dataquick-socal-home-sales-increase.html\">median SoCal home prices actually increased<\/a> last month. &nbsp;Well, no, as Calculated Risk explains, prices are still dropping, it&#8217;s a matter of a different mix of sales raising the median.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Mark DiCamillo of the Field Poll thinks that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.venturacountystar.com\/news\/2009\/jun\/17\/the-california-cafeteria\/?partner=RSS\">what will happen after the budget crisis<\/a> will be more ballot box budgeting.
