{"id":9172,"date":"2009-06-21T00:56:30","date_gmt":"2009-06-21T00:56:30","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2009-06-22T23:12:26","modified_gmt":"2009-06-22T23:12:26","slug":"ca10-first-major-candidate-forum-in-walnut-creek","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/calitics.com\/index.php\/2009\/06\/21\/ca10-first-major-candidate-forum-in-walnut-creek\/","title":{"rendered":"CA-10: First Major Candidate Forum In Walnut Creek"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Given the relative ambivalence in recent special elections in California, where members of Congress have been elected with 10,000 votes or less, I&#8217;d consider it an accomplishment that <a href=\"http:\/\/feedproxy.google.com\/~r\/PoliticalBlotter\/~3\/a7YQq54uq4g\/\">hundreds of people flocked<\/a> to the Walnut Creek Jewish Community Center last night, on a Friday night, to hear from six of the Democratic candidates who will seek to replace Ellen Tauscher in CA-10, once she is confirmed to an appointment at the State Department and resigns her seat. &nbsp;Reader <a href=\"https:\/\/calitics.com\/showDiary.do?diaryId=9169\">dslc<\/a> has a short on-site commentary here, and Lisa Vorderbrueggen has provided <A href=\"http:\/\/feedproxy.google.com\/~r\/PoliticalBlotter\/~3\/a7YQq54uq4g\/\">lots of multimedia<\/a> over at Political Blotter. &nbsp;The audio recording doesn&#8217;t seem to be working right now, but she had videos of every candidate&#8217;s closing statement. &nbsp;In case you&#8217;re just tuning in, those candidates include:<\/p>\n<p>Lt. Governor <a href=\"http:\/\/www.garamendi.org\/\">John Garamendi<\/a><br \/>\n<br \/>State Sen. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.markdesaulnierforcongress.com\/\">Mark DeSaulnier<\/a><br \/>\n<br \/>Assemblywoman <a href=\"http:\/\/www.joanbuchanan.com\/\">Joan Buchanan<\/a><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"http:\/\/adrielhampton.com\/\">Adriel Hampton<\/a><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"http:\/\/www.anthonywoodsforcongress.com\">Anthony Woods<\/a><br \/>\n<br \/>Tony Bothwell<\/p>\n<p>(Bothwell is a San Francisco-area attorney who doesn&#8217;t yet have a campaign website, but here&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/apxbothwell.com\/\">his law office site<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>Sadly, this is pretty much the extent of major media coverage that exists of yesterday&#8217;s event, despite several hundred residents and a Congressional race that impacts hundreds of thousands. &nbsp;Our dwindling press corps is definitely a problem. &nbsp;But based on the closing statements, you can decide for yourself who performed well last night. &nbsp;I&#8217;ll just throw around some other links as the race really kicks into gear. &nbsp;As a side note, apparently Garamendi brought out the giant golden bear clearly planned as his mascot for a gubernatorial race.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fogcityjournal.com\/wordpress\/2009\/06\/16\/buchanan-kicks-off-campaign-to-replace-tauscher\/\">Luke Thomas interviews Joan Buchanan<\/a> for the Fog City Journal, and Buchanan comes of as pretty knowledgeable about the challenges we face. &nbsp;She foregrounded her support of mass transit and BART expansion, health care reform (she supports single payer but wouldn&#8217;t commit to supporting HR 676, and thinks that a plan currently moving through the House with a robust public option could be a &#8220;stepping stone&#8221; to single payer) and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan (she generally supports Obama&#8217;s position).<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Also in the Fog City Journal, Harold Brown has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fogcityjournal.com\/wordpress\/2009\/06\/15\/emptying-canteens-in-the-desert\/\">an op-ed about Adriel Hampton<\/a>, claiming that &#8220;SF lefties are missing an opportunity&#8221; by not rallying to his campaign.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Anthony Woods is getting a fair amount of attention on the blogs. &nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mydd.com\/story\/2009\/6\/15\/232516\/528\">AR Dem profiled him<\/a> in this MyDD user diary, and today, Woods <a href=\"http:\/\/firedoglake.com\/2009\/06\/20\/meet-anthony-woods-progressive-candidate-for-congress-in-the-bay-area-special-election\/\">took questions at Firedoglake<\/a> in a live chat session with Howie Klein. &nbsp;I thought he served himself well.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 There&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.contracostatimes.com\/politics\/ci_12655350\">another Democratic forum scheduled<\/a> for July 2 in Antioch (Antioch City Hall, Second and H streets).<\/p>\n<p>A couple updates:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Lisa V. fixed the audio feed, which you can find <a href=\"http:\/\/soundcloud.com\/bayareanewsgroup\/cd10-forum-2009-06-19\">here<\/a>. &nbsp;Her story on the forum is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.contracostatimes.com\/search\/ci_12655888?IADID=Search-www.contracostatimes.com-www.contracostatimes.com\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p> In the first central Contra Costa County showdown of Democratic candidates vying for the chance to replace Rep.
