In Walnut Creek <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newamerica.net\/blog\/blockbuster-democracy\/2009\/walnut-creek-windfall-13011\">signature gatherers are being paid $4 per signature<\/a> for a measure having to do with some malls there. &nbsp;For some signatures, they&#8217;re getting $10. This is outrageous; it&#8217;s not the way representative democracy was supposed to work.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 George Will <a href=\"http:\/\/townhall.com\/columnists\/GeorgeWill\/2009\/07\/05\/can_california_be_sold_on_ebays_former_leader\">loves loves loves him some Meg Whitman<\/a>. &nbsp;Maybe someday she&#8217;ll speak to a reporter within 2,500 miles of California. &nbsp;One of her reform items I never knew: <em>reduce<\/em> the number of members in the Assembly, down from 80. &nbsp;If there&#8217;s ever anything we need, it&#8217;s less accountable government, right?<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Joe Matthews thinks we&#8217;re <a href=\"http:\/\/ow.ly\/gHlF\">heading for a federal receivership<\/a>. He says that we are just doing it slow-motion style, pointing to the threatened takeover of some of teh state parks by the National Park Service and the prison system.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Just to reiterate, we are just a few days from <a href=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/article\/SB124692354575702881.html\">banks refusing California IOUs<\/a>. &nbsp;That&#8217;s when this crisis gets kicked up a notch. &nbsp;In slightly better news, the Franchise Tax Board <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sacbee.com\/static\/weblogs\/capitolalertlatest\/023689.html?mi_rss=Capitol%20Alert\">will take the IOUs<\/a> for payment of income and corporate taxes.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Pfizer is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/cgi-bin\/article.cgi?f=\/c\/a\/2009\/07\/06\/BURR18JSOJ.DTL&#038;feed=rss.news\">pulling out of UCSF&#8217;s Mission Bay campus<\/a>. The move is a big blow to what was shaping up to be a great place for biotech business. It&#8217;s not clear to what extent this will harm the campus, as there other companies there, but that&#8217;s 100,000 square feet of space not being used by a high-profile company.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sacbee.com\/ourregion\/story\/2005178.html?mi_rss=Our%2520Region\">Teenagers are being hit hard<\/a> by the recession.
