I proudly stand with Veterans For Peace-LA in signing the organization’s Declaration to defund the Iraq/Afghanistan wars, except to bring our troops home safely. To keep our troops in harm’s way, to spend 2 – billion dollars a week on these occupations is a war on America’s middle class. We have money for bombs, but not for books – as 5,000 teachers in Los Angeles receive lay – off notices and community colleges close their summer school programs.
I ask my opponents Janice Hahn and Debra Bowen to reconsider their decision not to sign the Declaration. Congress has the power of the purse, which it exercised to finally end the Vietnam War after an estimated 60,000 American soldiers and millions of Vietnamese lost their lives.
Let’s not wait for the death toll in Iraq and Afghanistan to climb any higher. This week Veterans For Peace-LA carried coffins in downtown Los Angeles as the number of U.S. soldiers lost in Iraq/Afghanistan reached 6,000.
We do not know how many Iraqis or Afghan troops and civilians have died because the Pentagon does not keep a record.
We must protect our troops. Bring them home. Spread this Declaration throughout the land – and ask every congressional candidate to sign it.

Let’s bring our troops home A.S.A.P.
Like Jane Harman, Debra Bowen and Janice Hahn are imposters for peace as they ignored Ron Kovic’s call for unity to oppose future supplemental funding of these senseless conflicts.
Marcy Winograd needs to compare & contrast her record of clarity and consistency on the issue of peace versus the stumbling, bumbling and hollow words of her two leading opponents.
This needs to be done as soon as possible in these closing days of the campaign.
It was embarrassing to watch Bowen & Hahn avoid the peace pledge ironically in all places — Venice Beach!
How anyone could reasonably describe eithe Hahn or Bowen as progressive is simply naive, uninformed or both!

because it is disingenuous and panders to Republican fakery. Both offer variations of wanting to bring the troops home as quickly as possible but purport to be troubled by the concept that Congress would somehow leave the troops in the lurch overseas without money to bring them home and clothe, house, feed and protect them while that process is ongoing. That is a pure phony Republican talking point that Dems in the past have allowed themselves to fall victim to rather than respond, because Congress could readily earmark the funding for just that withdrawal purpose: provide funding to protect the troops while they prepare to and go forward with departure. My spouse, Marcy Winograd, is not afraid to make that point, and not afraid to explain to Repubs and Dems who allow themselves to be caught up in Repub/Fox rhetoric that Congress can do the right thing and not place the troops in danger, when in fact the whole point of withdrawing, of course, is to take them away from harm’s path.
