Voting system woes show need to elect Debra Bowen

Last Thursday, I went to a house party for Debra Bowen, candidate for Secretary of State.  She’s a smidgen ahead in the polls, but apparently trails her Republican opponent in funding.  Bowen has been leading the way on voting system integrity and voting rights from the State Senate. By contrast, McPherson recertified Diebold systems for use in California, dispite their long history of problems.

News events in the last week are creating opportunities to explain why we need to elect Bowen. The Maryland primary election on Tuesday was a debacle, with polls not opening, voters turned away, and a close election in doubt. Princeton computer scientist Ed Felten released a paper showing security vulnerabilities in the Diebold system used in Maryland. On Friday, the Washington Post raised concerns about the November elections.
