Endorsements below the flipper.

The following is the text of the SEIU United Healthcare Workers West and Local 721 endorsement:

“Your dedication to the concerns of our members and working families throughout the Coachella Valley makes us proud to support your candidacy for Palm Springs City Council,” states Juan Carlos Sanchez, Regional Political Organizer for SEIU – United healthcare Workers – West.

“I am sincerely honored to receive this endorsement,” states Williams. “I started my hotel career in a union position as a bellman.  I understand the challenges faced by working men and women, and the value of union representation.  That’s why in my hotel business I provide fully paid medical and dental insurance coverage to my staff.  It’s the right thing to do.”  Williams adds that he hopes other small business owners and managers are also providing paid healthcare to employees.

Williams is a twelve year resident of Palm Springs and owner of a boutique 24 room hotel.  He has provided employment for over 50 persons in his hotel business, and has contributed almost $1,000,000 in hotel taxes directly to the City of Palm Springs.

Desert Sun Newspaper Endorses Steven Pougnet for Mayor of Palm Springs

October 7, 2007 – Palm Springs, CA

The Desert Sun in its editoral page today endorsed Steven Pougnet for Mayor of Palm Springs.

Steven Pougnet captured Palm Springs’ attention in 2003 when he was elected to City Council and through hard work and strategic thinking, he has held it ever since.

Four years later, he is mayor pro tem and wants to be mayor in an election bid characterized as one in which one man stands out from the rest. That man is Steve Pougnet.

Steve Pougnet was endorsed by the three Palm Springs Democratic Clubs including the Desert Stonewall Democrats, the Democrats of the Desert, and the Palm Springs Democrats.

If Steve is elected, he would be the second consecutive openly-gay Mayor of Palm Springs and the first who is Caucasian.  With respect to full disclosure, BlueBeaumontBoyz is a member of Desert Stonewall Democrats, the GLBT Democratic Club or the Coachella Valley, and actively support Steve’s election campaign for Mayor of Palm Springs.

For your information, the race for Mayor of Palm Springs is a non-partisan race.  However, since Palm Springs is now a pre-dominantly Democratic city (refer to my earlier posts re voter registration in Palm Springs), and has the support of all three Democratic Clubs in Palm Springs, has been highly successful in raising campaign funds, and has great name recognition, Steve is generally perceived to be a heavy favorite in the Mayor’s race this year.

More below the flip…

The Desert Sun continued its endorsement by saying:

Pougnet is known valleywide and trailing him is a string of impressive accomplishments and community involvement.  He has increased money for tourism.  His work to bring two opposing sides together on development in the Chino Cone shows his ability as a consensus builder.  He has demonstrated a balanced approach to development and a willingness to admit mistakes.

Pougnet is working to revitalize downtown, including the Fashion Plaza, in which a pre-application for development has finally been submitted. He supports an east-west corridor tied to the museum and the convention center.

“He developed design guidelines for pedestrian-friendly mixed use development, which is the basis of the general downtown plan; and he was instrumental in the approval of 1 Palm Canyon, a mixed use project at the corner of Ramon and Palm Canyon Drive, among other developments.

Pougnet cited his work in the passage of the Chino Cone ordinance as one of his greatest accomplishments on the council, is the clear front-runner.

“In addition to working toward downtown revitalization, Pougnet worked on the blighted building ordinance that doles out fines, saying some property owners need a nudge. He also favors a business retention program, but has not been able to get support for the idea from the current city council.

“He’s on the Resource Conservation Commission, which focuses on how the city can cut down on waste and save on energy and water.  Pougnet also held a symposium with the Office on Aging to stay on top of issues concerning seniors.

“But we agree with him that his work on the very divisive Chino Cone is the issue that defines his best work thus far.  He’s the co-chairman of the Citizens Task Force for Mountain and Foothill Preservation and Planning, which required forging a compromise between developers and preservationists.  The result is the Chino Cone Ordinance.  Pougnet reached out and built bridges to help the city hammer the best possible compromise for development of the Chino Cone.”

The editorial continued, “The lack of several strong, experienced competitors, or even another clearly prominent challenger, indicates voters tend to be comfortable with the leadership Pougnet has demonstrated on the council.

“We believe his best is yet to come, and we urge Palm Springs voters to elect Pougnet mayor and allow him to continue to revitalize Palm Springs and protect its quality of life.

Pougnet’s challenges as mayor will be to continue to resolve downtown development issues and be innovative in planning for future development citywide.

“The Fashion Plaza will likely be one of the greatest issues facing the next mayor because it’s tied to so much of the city’s planned future growth.  Palm Springs needs a mayor who has the type of experience Pougnet has in working with developer John Wessman.  If development stalls, Pougnet also will need to be able to recognize when it’s time to consider other options.  He has said he is willing set a deadline and is not afraid to mention eminent domain, though we are not sure that makes sense.

“No doubt he has the experience and leadership to face those challenges and more.  Bottom line: He would make a great mayor.

Palm Springs, CA, September 28, 2007 – A majority of members of the Office of Neighborhood Involvement Committee (ONIC) have endorsed City Council Candidate Rick Hutcheson — more than are supporting any other City Council candidate.

“I appreciate this broad support from my colleagues on the neighborhood board very much, since it confirms my commitment to addressing public safety and quality of life concerns at the neighborhood level,” said Hutcheson . “Improving public safety is one of our top priorities, and organized neighborhoods can help in crucial ways, including crime prevention and emergency preparedness.”

Representatives from each of the City’s recognized neighborhoods make up the Committee.

“Everyone benefits when neighborhoods are organized, active and involved with City Hall,” Hutcheson added. “Good communication brings a quicker response to neighborhood concerns. Just as important, these organizations are a wonderful way to build friendships with one’s neighbors.” He serves on the Founding Board of his own neighborhood organization, as well as Treasurer.

Law Enforcement Unites Behind Pougnet for Palm Springs Mayor

This is an email forward that I just received from the Steve Pougnet for Mayor Campaign.  (Full disclosure, the Desert Stonewall Democrats, of which I am a member, has endorsed Pougnet for Mayor of Palm Springs.

Palm Springs — In a united show of support, the City’s police and fire organizations have overwhelmingly voted to endorse Steve Pougnet for Mayor.

“One of Steve’s top priorities as Mayor will be fighting and reducing crime in our eighborhoods. As a member of the City Council he has been a stalwart supporter of law enforcement. The officers of the Palm Springs Police Department strongly endorse Steve Pougnet for Mayor,” said Troy Castillo, President of the Palm Springs Police Officers’ Association.

Steve Pougnet is a visionary leader who has shown great courage to make the tough decisions and to tell the people the truth. The Palm Springs Fire Safety Unit Local 3601 is proud to endorse Steve for Mayor,” said Jason Loya, President of Palm Springs Fire Safety Unit
Local 3601
.

“To be a truly great city, Palm Springs must keep its neighborhoods, streets and schools safe. The people of Palm Springs deserve a Mayor
who will fight to see that our police and fire departments have the resources to do the job,” said Pougnet.

The Retooled Calitics Endorsement Process

(I’m thinking of making the endorsement process the subject of our next BlogTalkRadio show, where we will just take calls on the subject. Would you be interested in such a program, and calling in to discuss it? And if so, what time would work next week? – promoted by Brian Leubitz)

As you may have seen, we got a bit of blowback on our endorsement process. Rightly or wrongly, I did think there was a failure, mostly my own, to clearly annunciate our endorsement process. So, we are at a point where we will be reviewing all of our endorsements, so rather than do this piece-meal, I wanted to try to get this done all orderly-like.

So, here’s what we’re going to do. We are going to have a couple nominating posts, let’s say one for Northern California, and one for Southern California.  We can debate where the dividing line is, but hopefully it will be obvious. So, once we have a list of nominated individuals, we will design and distribute a questionnaire.  We’ll post the responses on the site (along with any youtube commentary from the candidates if they so desire).  Then, for each region we will select 3 candidates, regardless of the office they are seeking.  1/2 of the vote will come from voting on the site, and 1/2 from our editorial board.

Now, for timeline, I’m thinking I’d like to get this process started by the end of the month to allow us time to draw up the questions (through a post in early October) and then send them off to our prospective endorsees.  We’ll then do a multi-vote poll on the site as well as polling the Board.  The top 3 candidates will receive the endorsement, as long as they each have 3/5 vote from both the Board and the larger Calitics community. I’ll be devising a voting process, either within SoapBlox or using SurveyMonkey.com.

Any questions? Let me know.

Also, do me a favor and try the poll system.

Esquire Magazine Endorses Steve Young Ca 48th

( – promoted by SFBrianCL)

Cross Posted at our blog for Steve Young Ca 48th.

This is big and shows that Steve is finally getting some big-time coverage after building a campaign into a grassroots movement.

In its November issue, the national publication made endorsements for all 435 of the coming elections for the U.S. House of Representatives, and for all U.S. Senate and gubernatorial races on the fall ballot.

Here’s the money quote:

…Campbell “blinded” by loyalty, ideology…

It looks like more and more people are catching on to what Steve’s been saying. From the very beginning John Campbell has been nothing but a puppet to the Bush administration. When you look at his web site as pointed out here you know that Campbell doesn’t have an idea what a Congressional Representative is supposed to do.

Esquire gets it and is helping spread the word.

This is no Democrats-right-or-wrong magazine Esquire votes for the person. An email from the campaign points out that:

The magazine did endorse many other California Republicans, including Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger in his re-election bid.

We may disagree with some of their choices but we salute their integrity.

In the California 48th, Esquire says that Republican incumbent John Campbell lacks the independence and vision to deserve re-election: “On issues from the war to taxes, he is simply blinded by loyalty to the White House and by ideology.”

Young is the California Democratic Party’s endorsed candidate for the United States House of Representatives in California’s 48th District. Born in Southern California and raised in Utah, he is a successful attorney who has spent years representing working families in the courtroom.

And in another paragraph highlighting that Esquire gets Steve they point out that

Young’s campaign is founded on a five-point plan to restore vitality to the American economy and reduce America’s record deficits. His positions include: restoring outsourced middle class jobs, ending the occupation of Iraq with honor, offering a multi-pronged solution to immigration, improving educational opportunities for all, protecting pensions and preserving our environment through conservation and innovation.

Buy the magazine and read the entire endorsement. It’ll be worth it.

San Jose Mercury News Endorses Debra Bowen for Secretary of State

(It’s been said that McPherson, the former newspaper mogul, would garner every newspaper endorsement. I guess some papers chose their interest in a well-functioning democracy over industry loyalty. – promoted by SFBrianCL)

(Cross-posted from The California Courage Campaign)

On a blogger conference call recently, Debra Bowen warned us that since McPherson had been a "newspaper man" in a former career, she's been advised not to expect any newspaper endorsements in her race against him for Secretary of State. The Sacramento Bee seemed to confirm this warning when it endorsed, barely, McPherson.

While the case for McPherson is strong, this race is a close call. McPherson's Democratic opponent, state Sen. Debra Bowen, D-Redondo Beach, is smart and articulate. She successfully authored legislation to place state bill information and committee analyses on the Internet.

What tipped the Bee in favor of McPherson? She's a reformer and that’s baaaaaad.

Unfortunately, county registrars complain that her aggressive demeanor as chair of the Senate Elections, Reapportionment and Constitutional Amendment Committee has created tensions rather than building the collaboration and trust that are essential between state and county elections officials.

Today, The San Jose Mercury News has endorsed Debra Bowen for Secretary of State for this very reason. They get that Bowen's toughness with the county registrars is exactly what is required.

McPherson is less likely to challenge county officials. But if county registrars had their way, none of California's landmark electronic voting reforms, like a paper trail, would be in effect today. A secretary of state must be willing to lead the registrars on issues of voting integrity and accountability. Bowen would do this.

They also get that Debra's long career as a legislator fighting for open government perfectly prepares her for the office of Secretary of State.

Bowen…is far more skeptical of electronic systems than McPherson. Throughout her 14 years in the Legislature, Bowen has been a leading advocate for open government. Using technology on behalf of democracy has been her passion. She sponsored legislation that put bills and committee reports on the Internet; she served on a committee that brought the court system into the electronic age. As secretary of state, she would require tighter rules on electronic voting and encourage the creation of open-source software to guarantee security and accuracy.

In addition, the Mercury News's endorsement draws a crucial point of distinction between the two candidates on SB370, the law that Bowen carried through the legislature and Schwarzenegger signed last year that requires a voter-verified paper receipt for all electronic voting machines. McPherson opposed it.

Their disagreement over SB 370, which Bowen sponsored last year, perhaps best illustrates the differences in philosophy and approach between her and McPherson. Now law, the bill required that counties use the voter-verified paper receipt, which touch-screen machines are now required to produce, for recounts and for random audits. McPherson opposed the bill, in large part because county registrars didn't want it. But SB 370 provides a critical check against fraud and machine malfunctioning, which Schwarzenegger recognized in signing the bill.

The San Jose Mercury News thanks Bruce McPherson for his service as a transitional figure in the wake of the chaos that Kevin Shelley left behind. But in the end, they make the correct choice.

McPherson restored stability to the office. Bowen would bring dynamism and skepticism that the position needs. She is our choice.
