CA-48th: The Real News

Well, the CA-48th has settled into a three period waiting for the November 8th statewide elections.  Everyone in the 48th is trying their best to help do the work necessary on the November 8th election and still help CA-48 and Steve Young and it’s hard on everyone! I think both will pick up dramatically for us after the Statewide General Election is finished and the Governor’s effort is defeated.

Yesterday Governor Muscles started his official GOTV effort in OC and Steve Young was out front with the Firefighters, Police unions and other labor groups protesting with signs and shouts. He is due to go to a Senator Clinton fundraiser tonight. Will he get an official photo we can use? I don’t know yet. That was still being talked about last I heard.

But the most amazing piece of info from this mornings article about the Statewide General Special Election was that even Muscles was only predicting a 30% turnout!

With the tens of millions that both sides have already spent on this race I thought it would be much higher than that.

This makes my own prediction for Dec 6th (the Final General Election for Ca-48th) of 18%, down from the 22% of the Oct 4th Primary, seem realistic…not just wishful.

If we can move a relative handful of our 108K Democratic Base and the 75K Indy base…much less pick up the Republican women that won’t vote for the Republican because he’s Anti-Choice….

We can win this race!

We need you good Democrats and Independents to work hard to defeat those damn propositions but not forget the hard work of Steve Young, his volunteers and give generously as you can.

All of us know this isn’t the easiest time to be a Democrat in California. We are faced with huge money and an enormous machine.

But remember that the modern Democratic Party was born in the struggle of the Union movement when getting to the negotiating table was done with physical fighting, blood and broken bones. What we do today is nothing compared to what was done by those brave people a generation or two before us.

Work hard and never, ever give up. Our Democratic forefathers, many of whom shed blood on the picket lines or getting into polling places, demand it of us.

Charlie Brown to Challenge Doolittle for CA-04

(Our Very Own Iraq War Vet… – promoted by SFBrianCL)

No, not that Charlie Brown, but Iraq war vet and Democratic hopeful Lt. Col. Charles Brown. Sacramento for Democracy has the scoop:

Come on down and support Charlie Brown as he officially announces he is running for Congress in CA’s 4th District against John Doolittle!!

Come to Roseville this Saturday, October 15 at 10 a.m. at the Veterans Memorial Hall, 110 Park Dr. in Roseville. Map is here.

Lt. Colonel Charles Brown Will Officially Announce He’s Running for
Congress in CA’s 4th District

You are invited to attend the official candidate announcement and press
conference of Lt. Colonel Charlie Brown. Is this the beginning of the
end for Boss Doolittle? Will you be able to say that you were there
when it began?

more after the fold

Charlie Brown will take on Republican John Doolittle in one of the most
conservative districts in Northern California. Lt. Colonel Brown is
the Paul Hacket of California — both are veterans who are against the
war in Iraq. Paul nearly knocked out a Republican challenger in one of
the most Republican districts in Ohio. The 4th district of California
does not have as much Republican registration as does Hacket’s
district, but it does have 48.14% Republicans as of February 2005 and a
large number of Decline to State, independent voters.

It seems that there may be a perfect storm in the works for Boss
Doolittle who is number 6 in charge of the Republican House of
Representatives. Boss Doolittle is a big contributor and Supporter of
Tom Delay who has been twice indicted. Doolittle was one of Newt
Gingrich’s gang of six neocon extremist congressmen who hatched the
contract with America. They have turned out to be among the most
corrupt and Doolittle has broken that contract by not accepting term
limits, voting for massive deficits and accepting banned political
favors.

As anecdotal evidence that the tide is changing in the 4th
District, witness an event that happened at Sierra Foothills Democratic
Club meeting in western El Dorado County on Monday October 10. The
club members were sitting down in public at 3 Brother’s Restaurant
about to begin a meeting when a CHP officer came up to them and said
that he was tired of being a Republican. He had had it with the
Governor and under staffing in the county. He wanted to register as a
Democrat. He was quickly provided with a registration card. That’s
48.12% and shrinking.

The time is ripe for change and support is building for
Lt. Colonel Brown, a long term Sierra Club and ACLU member. Grassroots
volunteers from red and blue counties are making this change. If we
can elect Brown, the people can certainly take back their House of
Representatives and the rest of our government. Many of you may have
heard of Charlie Brown during our exploratory phase. We have met the
goals that we needed to reach during that phase and we are now set to
launch our campaign in which we hope to bring together Democrats,
Greens, Libertarians, independents voters, and those Republicans who
still support the notion of democracy.

If you can make it to Roseville this Saturday, please come and hold a
sign. Invite a friend or neighbor to come along as well. Pass this
message along. Show your support for Charlie this Saturday October 15
at 10 a.m. at the Veterans Memorial Hall, 110 Park Dr. in Roseville.
Don’t miss this historic event.

For more information call Don Nicodemus at (530) 677-7230.

Time: Saturday, October 15, 2005 – 10:00am PST
Length: 1:00

Location:
Veterans Memorial Hall
110 Park Dr.
Roseville, CA

This is exactly the sort of race that we need to start showing up in if we are able to build and take advantage of an anti-incumbant groundswell in the 2006 midterms. Now all we need is a challenger for Lundgren in the third CD. Any takers?

San Diego Mayoral Election News

( – promoted by SFBrianCL)

It’s not getting the same kind of press as the special election, but the San Diego mayoral race is an interesting contest as well.  From Hotline at nationaljournal.com:

Racked by scandal, San Diego is choosing a new slate of leaders. “Polls suggest that former Police Chief Jerry Sanders has a comfortable lead over Councilwoman Donna Frye. He’s a Republican, former Red Cross and United Way official and born-again tax-fighter. She’s a Democrat and surf-shop owner who has dared suggest the city may need a half-cent boost in sales tax to dig its way out of the worst fiscal mess in its history. Even in a mini-era in which everything else at City Hall is topsy-turvy, mayoral politics seem to be following the pattern seen repeatedly in the last three-plus decades. A moderate beats a liberal. A Republican beats a Democrat unless the Republican is tarred as a lackey of land developers. The candidate who pledges fealty to the local anti-tax orthodoxy has an advantage over one who does not. Frye has a smattering of Democrats, women’s groups and private-sector labor unions. Public-employee unions, criticized by both candidates for the city’s $2-billion pension deficit, are staying neutral. A poll by DataMar Inc., a local polling firm unaligned with either candidate, showed Sanders leading Frye 47% to 40%, with 12% undecided. He led among Republicans 80% to 11%. She led among Democrats but by a smaller margin, 65% to 27%.” (Perry, Los Angeles Times, 10/9)

We all know that Donna Frye won the original election over Murphy.  The fact that some people didn’t bubble in “write-in” cost the city millions of dollars and one corrupt mayor.  Sanders, while not as dirty as Murphy, is not what San Diego needs right now.  Frye will clean out that city, balance their books, and repair the city’s image.

Does Prop. 73 open ban on in-vitro fertilization

(The most dangerous part of Prop. 73? The definition of a fetus as an unborn child. Framing is key here. – promoted by SFBrianCL)

The OC register is running an article about whether Prop. 73 will alter the regulation of in-vitro fertilization:

Putting that language into the state Constitution could lay legal grounds for those wishing to ban stem-cell research and in-vitro fertilization, said Margaret Crosby, an attorney who helped get the state’s previous parental notification law thrown out. Because embryonic stem-cell research and in-vitro fertilization involve unused embryos, the practices could be vulnerable to the legal challenge that they are terminating human life, she said.

In particular, the text of Prop. 73 defines “abortion” as:

the use of any means to terminate the pregnancy of an unemancipated minor female known to be pregnant with knowledge that the termination with those means will, with reasonable likelihood, cause the death of the unborn child, a child conceived but not yet born. For purposes of this section, “abortion” shall not include the use of any contraceptive drug or device.

Anybody want to comment on whether this is a real risk, or some sort of straw man argument created by the OC register so that they don’t need to discuss issues about how much access to the courts minors who fear abuse at the hands of their parents really have?

Take Action: Stop Arnold’s False Ads

(Lies are part of the game I suppose, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t point them out. – promoted by SFBrianCL)

Here is your chance to stop Schwarzenegger and his true lies.  Earlier today, the Governor’s campaign team began airing a new 15-second advertisement that says Prop 76 “will increase funding available to school districts.”

That claim is bogus: according to the nonpartisan Legislative Analysts Office, Prop 76 will slash education funding by $4 billion – and gives the Governor even more power to starve our schools of funding during a “budget emergency.” The California Budget Project came to the same conclusion yesterday.

This isn’t censorship. The Federal Communications Act demands that the truth be told in TV advertisements.

That’s why the Alliance for a Better California has already sent letters to more than 40 stations in California demanding that they take the ad off the air.

In the next 24 hours, TV stations will decide whether to act on our demand that the ad be modified or retracted. We need your help to demand that the stations force the Governor to be honest with California voters about the destructive impact of Prop 76 on our schools.

The Stakes of the Governor’s Mansion

They are certainly high for organized labor in California.  If they lose on Nov. 8 of this year, GOP-leaning Chamber of Commerce type groups will begin to dominate the political landscape.

They only dominate Arnold now, but if he manages to win these Propositions, who knows what efforts they will bring to bear in the future.  As it stands, Ahnold killed most of labor’s bills while signing most of big business’s bills:

SACRAMENTO — Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s weariness with unions and the Legislature — two institutions whose influence he is trying to curb through the special election he called for next month — was on full display as he dispatched many of the ideas lawmakers approved this year.

Often agreeing with the California Chamber of Commerce, one of the main architects of his agenda in the Nov. 8 election, the Republican governor vetoed many of labor’s top priorities.

Schwarzenegger’s actions made unions, who are leading the opposition to his ballot proposals, among the bigger losers in a year when the governor found much to offer those on both sides of many issues, including the environment, gay rights and consumer protection.

Though Schwarzenegger signed a number of union-sponsored measures — in some cases, against the wishes of his business allies — labor’s achievements were light years away from the heady days when Schwarzenegger’s predecessor, Democrat Gray Davis, routinely approved ambitious union requests.

“Organized labor in California, which is really a cornerstone of the labor movement in this country, is on the ropes,” said Larry Gerston, a professor of political science at San Jose State University. “If you’re the forces of business and are anti-tax, and you see this kind of success here, you’ve got to be licking your lips in terms of what’s going to happen in 2006.”

Over the last month, Schwarzenegger rejected measures that would have cracked down on employers who delay paying workers’ compensation claims or fail to pay the minimum wage or overtime. He declined to raise the minimum wage, provide unemployment insurance to striking workers who are locked out, or pay particularly productive agricultural and garment workers more money during their rest breaks.

No big suprise here, but worth noting.

Ron Dellums to run for Oakland Mayor

Yesterday brought a dramatic announcement that reshaped the Oakland mayoral race. Former Congressman Ron Dellums, who represented CA-9 (Berkeley and Oakland, currently held by Barbara Lee) from 1970 to 1998, has thrown his hat into the ring:

In his emotional oratory at Laney College, the 69-year-old Dellums said he wants to make Oakland “a model city” for the nation, and one that is led by “a progressive, multiracial coalition.” He spoke passionately about universal health care, ending poverty and inspiring young people.

“If Ron Dellums running for mayor gives you hope, then let’s get on with it,” said Dellums, pointing to about 200 supporters who jumped to their feet and roared their approval.

He’s now widely recognized as the frontrunner in the race, against Ignacio de la Fuente, Oakland City Council President and Jerry Brown’s handpicked successor. Nancy Nadel, another Oakland City Councillor, is in the race, and seems a bit displeased that her mantle as the progressive candidate has been stolen by the formidable Dellums.

Should be an interesting campaign!

Blue Angels in San Francisco

I hate the Blue Angels. Every fall they come; every fall the US Air Force buzzes San Francisco in conjunction with Fleet Week. What crap! No city should be subjected to stunt pilots flying low over populated areas to demonstrate their cajones and prove US power to say “fuck you” to the world.

It is not like the damn things don’t fall down. In October, 1998 two of the planes crashed into Georgia woodlands — how many would have died if that had been a neighborhood in San Francisco?  Previously, two planes collided during one of these shows over Niagara Falls; one pilot died.

Why does the Navy do these displays? The Chronicle interviewed the downtown lunchtime crowd subjected to practice runs yesterday.

“They’re the products of the devil,” said street artist Ulysses Dickerson, who was trying to sell his $25 paintings of angels and nymphs. “They’re overlords. They’re invaders. But there’s always something happening in San Francisco. One week it’s anti-Bush rallies, the next week it’s the military saying, ‘Look what we can do.’ “…

“At first it seems kind of cool,” said Christina Wolf, munching on a chicken salad. “But then it reminds you of what Iraqi citizens experience every day. But over there it’s real. So I guess it’s a mixed message.”

At a moment when even President Nincompoop is calling for fuel conservation, each F/A-18 uses approximately 8,000 pounds or 1,300 gallons of JP-5 jet fuel in a show.

Aren’t there any local authorities that can interrupt this nonsense?

Call to Action this Saturday in San Jose: Help to defeat Ahnold in November

First of all I want to say that this is a great place to catch up on California Politics, bravo for starting this blog!

I have lived in California all of my life, first in San Francisco, then a few years in Monterey, and for the last 21 years San Jose has been my home.  During my 46 years in California there have been changes politically, swings to the right, swings to the left and some moderation popping up here and there.  Right now we are seeing an attempt by the GOP to swing our state to the right, and we have a Governor that is without a doubt unqualified to lead this state.

If, like me, you are fed up with the lack of leadership from this governor, if you are ready to help take your state back, come to a “Call to Action” in San Jose this Saturday morning.

“Calls to Action” are organized by the county Democratic Party to help get out the vote in upcoming elections, to organize voter registration and to distribute information to voters on upcoming elections.  If you have two hours on Saturday, from 9 am to 11 am, come to the “Call to Action” and find out how you can help defeat Ahnold in November.

The “Call to Action” will be this Saturday, here are the details:

SCCDP Call to Action
10/08/2005 09:00am
Sheriff’s Auditorium, 55 Younger St., San Jose, Central San Jose

Hurricane Katrina has exposed fundamental differences between the Republican philosophy that renders government incapable of responding to national emergencies and the Democratic philosophy that government is the agent through which we strengthen society. Join our Call to Action to learn more about the failure of the Federal Government to respond adequately to the Hurricane and to find out why Arnold’s special election will help lead California down the same path. We will discuss actions that can be taken to help make people aware of the true nature of the Republican ideology and mobilize to Stop Arnold’s special interest agenda. Our guests include Meri Maben, District Chief of Staff for Congressman Mike Honda and Assemblyman Ira Ruskin.

If you can’t come Saturday, visit the Santa Clara County Democratic Party website (www.sccdp.org) and sign up for the newsletter or check the calendar for ongoing volunteer opportunities (you can also sign up online to volunteer).

Hope I see you this Saturday!
