CA-InsComm: Poizner caught with his hand in the cookie jar

(Cross posted to dKos and MyDD. – promoted by SFBrianCL)

Over at the California Progress Report, Frank has been doing some great snooping at Steve Poizner’s records.  It seems Poizner, the GOP Candidate for Insurance Commissioner against our dear Cruz, claims that he’s insurance money free.  Turns out, that’s not the case so much:

Republican candidate for state Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner has been making his pledge to not accept any campaign contributions from the insurance industry a centerpiece of his campaign.  This is highlighted on his campaign website. In an “exclusive column penned by Steve Poizner” in the conservative FlashReport, he champions himself as a “Real Reformer.”

Because I’m not taking a dime of insurance company money, I won’t be taken in by any schemes that typically drive up insurance costs in California. …

Because I refuse to accept that money, I’m no one’s lap dog – my office will be home to the highest ethical standards, not the highest campaign bidder.  I won’t merely be an industry watchdog, I intend to be a pit bull when it comes to pursuing fraud and abuse.

…[T]he biggest problem he has is that a campaign committee he controls has already received hundreds of thousands of insurance company contributions, some direct and some through other committees that they have contributed heavily to. CPR 9/22/06

I won’t bore you with all the gory details of the fiscal transactions.  Frank explains those plenty well, and I’ll let you click on over toe California Progress Report for the full story.  But, here’s a quick example:

On November 2, 2005, two insurance contributions totaling $75,000 is [sic] deposited in the Chamber’s PAC and the very next day $75,000 is given to Poizner’s committee.

What does this remind you of?  Tom Delay’s TRMPAC scam?  That’s the case Delay is still under indictment for laundering corporate donations into Texas campaigns illegaly. So, it’s not that Poizner isn’t taking insurance company money, it’s that he’s just doing it on the down-low.  And we all know that taking money on the down-low isn’t good for anybody…except the participants.  At least Cruz acknowledges his campaign contributions.  So, sure, perhaps the “Steve Poizner for I.C. Campaign” hasn’t taken any money directly from insurance companies, but they’ve received laundered money from them.

This little game of Pick-a-shell is a big disservice to the voters and the State of California.  So, Steve, let’s quit the charade, your money doesn’t buy you piety. Cut it out with the  sanctimony and play the game with the same rules as everybody else.

Congressional forum on the cost of Iraq

( – promoted by SFBrianCL)

Friends,

Over 2,650 lives, and more than $300 billion later, the occupation of Iraq remains one of the greatest leadership failures of our time. President Bush failed to find any WMD’s, failed to be honest about the invasion, failed to use a sound military strategy, failed the people of Iraq, and perhaps most importantly, failed us, the American public.

His vendetta in Iraq has cost our country our sons and daughters, our brothers and sisters, husbands and wives. While children struggle to learn in crumbling schools, and families are forced to find a way to put food on their tables, this occupation has cost our country the ability to address our real national priorities.

$300 billion could have fixed our schools, secured our ports and provided health care to millions in need. 2,650 people could have supported their families and enriched our great country.  Intelligence experts and other Pentagon officials could have concentrated on finding Osama bin Laden.

On Tuesday, September 26th, I will be holding a Congressional forum on the cost of the continuing occupation of Iraq. This is the third such forum that I have held on the subject of Iraq over the past year.  Each time bringing our troops home has been a focal point.

When I spoke up in January of 2005, I was the first member of Congress to call for withdrawal, but I was certainly not alone. While the politicians in Washington were too afraid, or too blind, to support a call for a withdrawal, I was joined by many of you throughout the country, who were leading the grassroots effort against this unjust war.

On Tuesday I will be joined by a number of my colleagues, and expert witnesses will speak to the different costs of this war, including Lt. General William Odom (who served as the Director of the NSA under President Reagan) and Dr. Paul Pillar (a 30 year veteran of the CIA).

So far the mainstream media has failed to seriously cover these forums, preventing the American public from participating in an honest debate on this crucial subject, that’s why I need you to help me reach out, and I urge all of you to join in this debate. Politicstv.com will be providing coverage of our hearing, starting later in the afternoon on Tuesday. We are hoping that C-Span will cover the event live. And you can read the full testimony of all of our experts on my website at www.woolsey.house.gov afterwards. While we will have limited space in the room for members of the public, I would like to extend an invitation to any bloggers in the DC area who would like to attend. You can contact my office at 202-225-6101 for information on getting there and getting in, and to reserve a space.

As the American public, and those here in Congress, realize just how costly a mistake the occupation has been, it is more important than ever that we keep up the pressure.  Please join me in this important debate.

GOP Senate candidate Mountjoy caught in lie (surprise)

(Ah, missed this when I wrote mine. I’ll add the pictures to the flip of this diary. – promoted by SFBrianCL)

The LA Times has found out that Richard Mountjoy is a liar:

Republican U.S. Senate candidate Richard Mountjoy has claimed in his campaign biography that he served aboard the battleship Missouri during the Korean War, but his military record shows no assignment on the famous vessel, The Times has found.

Now remember this is the man who is running around CA talking about sins and sinners, a man who has invoked, over and over, Christianity in his campaign.

More from the Times:

In an interview Thursday, Mountjoy acknowledged that he did not serve on the Missouri. Last week, when first asked about his record, he said his Missouri stint had been “very brief” and that he otherwise served on the U.S. heavy cruiser Bremerton, which has a less celebrated history.

However:

The statement about the Missouri was on Mountjoy’s campaign website, alongside a photo of him as a young sailor. It read:

“After graduating from Monrovia-Arcadia-Duarte High School, Dick joined the Navy and served during the Korean War aboard the Battleship Missouri.”

Mountjoy claims that he didn’t know that the statement was on his website, and as of yesterday his website has finally removed the statement.

Editor’s note: I added images from his site after the flip

CA-Gov: Arnold’s Comm Director tied to global warming denial astroturf group!

( – promoted by SFBrianCL)

(cross-posted at DailyKos)

I originally posted this story over at DailyKos, but it got lost in the shuffle, and I was asked to post it here too.  So here it is.  Hopefully someone here can contact someone working with Angelides’ people to let them know about this.  Why doesn’t the media know about these ties?

Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Communications Director is one Adam Mendelsohn.  Here’s an interview with Adam from FlashReport, wherein Adam bashes blogs like DailyKos due to our anonymity.

There absolutely is a distinction between anonymous blogs and honest blogs, such as the FlashReport.  Because this site is concerned about it’s [sic] credibility and discriminates what it posts, it holds itself to a certain standard, and this is why it has become so popular.  Anonymous sites are not credible and have little impact.

But that’s not what drew my attention.  Look at his résumé.  He was a vice president of DCI Group.  Follow me below the fold for more on this connection.

So what exactly is DCI Group?  I’ve written extensively about them before, but let’s recap.  DCI Group is a top Republican lobbying firm tied to the hip with ExxonMobil, producing groups such as Tech Central Station, masquerading as a “science” network, when all it is is a collection of paid off scientists that deny and mock the existence of global warming.  In the 1990s, DCI Group was responsible for working with the tobacco companies to deny claims of health problems and cancer associated with smoking.  Yes, that’s what they did before public opinion and medical studies finally won over the American public.  So they moved on to deny global warming at the behest of the oil companies.

Many of you will also remember DCI Group was responsible for putting forth that YouTube video of Al Gore as a penguin, mocking his documentary An Inconvenient Truth, and pretending it came from a random guy living in his mother’s basement.

So, getting back to Mendelsohn.  This was what he did for DCI Group as a Vice President of the company.

Partnered with DCI Group to start a communications firm specializing in corporate earned media campaigns.  After 27 months, company is now at staff of fourteen.  Currently manage and oversee all day-to-day operations.

And now he’s working with Arnold as his Communications Director.  How can we trust Arnold’s supposedly pro-environment bonafides when he has this global warming denying shill working for him?  Someone needs to ask why Arnold hired Mendelsohn in the first place.  Will any reporter out there ask the tough questions of the Governator?

Framing The Fall: Bush On The Ballot in CA

The California Courage Campaign has launched a new campaign for the fall focusing on five initiatives that will be on the Nov 7 ballot here in California. Last year we had great success as part of the progressive coalition that defeated Arnold’s reform initiatives. This year, Arnold is, probably wisely, keeping his distance from them. Without a unifying force behind the initiatives, we knew we had to come up with a theme, a narrative, with which to frame the initiatives in a way that would educate and motivate the ballot measure-weary electorate. And this year, what better motivator for voters in our great blue state, and, truly, what better uniter of what ordinarily would be disparate progressive groups than the decider himself, George W. Bush.

Yes, this fall, George Bush’s agenda will be on the November ballot in California, and we’re calling on our supporters and all of you to join us in saying simply “George Bush, you’re not welcome here” by signing our open letter to President Bush. Go ahead, try it. The comments section is particularly therapeutic.

More over the flip.

Rick Jacobs, Chair of The California Courage Campaign, launched the campaign with an e-mail to supporters yesterday:

The issues vary, but the effects are  the same. Conservatives plan to make California a national leader in regressive  policies and unfair practices.

Courage Campaign, with your help, wants to stop Bush and Co. from:

  • Invading our privacy
  • Giving tax breaks to Big Tobacco and Big Oil
  • Corrupting fair elections
  • Handing over our state to rich real estate developers

We are mounting a concerted effort to keep Bush, Karl Rove and their conservative special interests out of California. We've stepped up to coordinate with dozens of other progressive organizations around the state, from the ACLU to the League of Conservation Voters to the California Nurses Association and together, we will send George Bush's dangerous policies packing.

We’ve launched a Bush in CA website where we describe the 5 initiatives we’re taking positions on including how the other side is framing the debate, who is funding the initiatives, an explanation of the positions we take and links to the actual “Yes On” or “No On” campaigns for those props.

A rundown:

No On 85: Waiting Period and Parental Notification Before Termination of Minor’s Pregnancy.

Yes on 85 calls this the “Parents’ Right To Know” Act

No on 85 says that voting no means “Real Teen Safety”

We call it “Protect Teen Safety.”

If approved, Proposition 85 would require notification given to parents of a pregnant girl under the age of 18 when she seeks an abortion. Then, a 48-hour waiting period is mandated.

Yes on 86: Tax on Cigarettes. Initiative Constitutional Amendment and Statute.

Yes on 86 Campaign calls it “Stop Big Tobacco”

No on 86 Campaign calls it “Stop the $2.1 Billion Tax Hike”

We call it “Hold Big Tobacco Accountable”

Will raise state cigarette tax $2.60 a pack and is projected to raise about $2.1 billion in 2007 to fund health insurance for uninsured kids, improved emergency care, tobacco prevention programs, and chronic disease research.

Yes on 87: Alternative Energy. Research, Production, Incentives. Tax on California Oil Producers. Initiative Constitutional Amendment and Statute.

Yes on 87 Campaign calls it “Make Big Oil Pay for Cleaner Energy”

No on 87 Campaign calls it “No on $4 Billion Oil Tax. It’s a Recipe For Waste, Not Progress”

We call it “Make Big Oil Pay Their Fair Share”

Right now, Big Oil pays California almost nothing to drill in our state, while they pay billions of dollars in drilling fees to every other oil producing state. Prop 87 will set California’s oil drilling fees to 1.5 to 6% (depending on the price of oil per barrel) which is at levels similar to those in Oklahoma, Alaska, and Texas. The revenue raised ($4 billion over 10 years) will go towards research and producing alternative fuels and energy.

Yes On 89: Political Campaigns. Public Financing. Corporate Tax Increase. Campaign Contribution and Expenditure Limits. Initiative Statute.

Yes on 89 calls this the “California Clean Money and Fair Elections Act”

Californians to Stop Prop 89, a coalition of taxpayer groups, insurance companies, and corporations, says that this is “Phony Reform.”

We call it the “Restore Democracy Act.”

If enacted, Proposition 89 would reduce the influence of lobbyists and special interests in California. This is why it’s often called the “clean money” act. Currently, lobbyists and corporations can donate “dirty” money to the campaign funds of their favorite candidates. Prop 89 would restrict the ability of special interests to donate to campaigns, and would provide public financing for qualified “clean money” candidates.

No on 90: Government Acquisition, Regulation of Private Property. Initiative Constitutional Amendment.

Yes on 90 campaign calls it “Protect Our Homes Act”

No on 90 campaign calls it “The Taxpayer Trap”

We call it “Leave No Real Estate Developer Behind”

This is fake “eminent domain” reform. Prop 90’s out of state backers are trying to capitalize on people’s fears about government confiscating private property (made infamous in the Supreme Court’s Kelo v. New London decision) to inject their own anti-government ideals into our constitution. Prop 90 will destroy future environmental protections, responsible land-use planning and basic laws intended to protect the welfare of California’s citizens.

Leading up to the elections, we’re going to be spreading the word throughout the state and throughout the blogosphere about these initiatives with e-mail alerts, petitions and an ad we have in the works, which we’ll be running some time next month. Any contributions to the cause are of course always welcome. We actually have a generous donor who has pledged to match up to $30,000.

So please, join us by signing the open letter to Bush and spreading the word to all your friends and family in California.

Thanks!

Popular Vote Bill on Arnold’s Desk

California could be the first state to sign on to the national populat vote compact.  The compact would not come into effect until enough states sign on to guarantee 270 electoral votes.  The law would make California relevant again in the presidential elections by making every vote worth exactly the same amount.  As it stands right now, California is ignored completely, unless you count the Dem candidates running to SF and LA for money and the Reps running to the OC and SD for money.

George Skelton gives Arnold some advice:

In a previous incarnation, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger was a self-described reformer and champion of direct democracy. That worked fine for him one year, but was a disaster the next. Now he gets another crack at shaking things up.
{snip}
No more battleground states or spectator states. Every state would be in play. Every vote would count.

Schwarzenegger’s signature on the Umberg bill would make California the first state to ratify an interstate compact obligating each signatory to cast all its electoral votes for the presidential candidate who wins the national popular vote. (LA Times 9/21/06)

This can only be a good thing for California.  Even if California gave 54.4% of its vote last time to Kerry, this compact would force the Dems to come here to the high population centers to campaign for ever last vote.

Plus, if this would have been law in 2000…well, you know…

The San Joaquin River will flow again

I was going to mention the deal that was struck last week to restore the San Joaquin River, but, other things arose.  However, I would like to point out the arrangement, and not my head vigorously in support of the pact.

This week there was good news from farther afield in the South Bay’s “back yard,” the vast San Francisco Bay watershed that extends from the Sierra to the Golden Gate. On Wednesday, environmental groups, Central Valley growers and the federal government announced an agreement to settle an 18-year-old lawsuit and restore the San Joaquin River, dewatered more than a half-century ago by the construction of Friant Dam near Fresno. (SJ Merc 9/14/06)

Think about this.  There are going to be salmon there! Probably.  The river should eventually flow all the way back into the Bay Delta.  This is a river right now that well…underwhelms.  A viable San Joaquin River benefits everybody along its path.
