CA-04: Promises Kept with Charlie Brown and Rep. Mike Thompson

(here’s a less gory Charlie Brown story. GOTV – promoted by shayera)

As many of you know, Charlie Brown is running a different kind of campaign. He is not running for fame or for power or to derail the ambitions of an opponent. Instead, Charlie is running a campaign focused on taking action, solving problems and producing results.

One of the key aspects of Charlie Brown’s historic campaign is his tremendous dedication to helping serve his fellow veterans. For those of you unfamiliar with Charlie Brown and may or may not have been living under a rock for the last 3 1/2 years, Charlie is a 26-year veteran of the United States Air Force and retired lieutenant colonel. Charlie served first as a rescue helicopter pilot at the tail-end of the Vietnam War after graduating from the Air Force Academy, and earned the Distinguished Flying Cross for his participation in the Mayaguez Incident. He later transferred to fixed-wing reconnaissance, and served as an intelligence officer leading cold war missions around the world and eventually coordinating surveillance flights over Iraq’s No-Fly Zones before his retirement in 1998.

Photobucket

He has been committed to “Leave No Veteran Behind,” an idea that gets a lot of lip-service from politicians but never sees that promise fulfilled. Charlie Brown is making that difference with his Promises Kept Veterans Charity Challenge, in which he has given 5% of his campaign funds to local veterans’ service providers–which I’m sure many of you know, do a lot of the heavy lifting in terms of service delivery to veterans most in need across America.

This unique action by Charlie Brown has resulted in over $90,000 in funds to be diverted to keep the lights on (quite literally) for numerous homeless shelters, veterans’ crisis groups and special needs groups right here in the 4th District.

On Friday, October 31st, just 5 days from Election day, Charlie gave the last of his Promises Kept funds to help keep those groups that work so tirelessly and thanklessly to care for those who defended our freedom.

Photobucket

Joining Charlie and the Veterans for Brown team was Congressman Mike Thompson, a fellow Vietnam veteran and Representative from California’s 1st Congressional District. Thompson, who also Co-Chairs the House Veterans Caucus, has helped lead the fight for veterans’ rights and better access to healthcare for veterans and their families.

Photobucket

After arriving in Roseville, Congressman Thompson and Charlie were given a briefing by the Gathering Inn’s Suzi Defosset before the ceremony. Talking to veterans who had received care by the numerous organizations present, Charlie and Rep. Thompson got to hear directly from those who had benefited from the programs being offered. On hand were numerous veterans, advocates and local elected officials, including Walt Scherer of Loomis and Gina Garbolino of Roseville.

Photobucket

After being introduced by Veterans for Brown co-chair Don Harper, Congressman Thompson explained the importance of what Charlie has been doing as a candidate sacrificing that extra commercial, radio spot or district-wide mailer to shine light on a problem that is not uncommon to every congressional district in the country. Our country’s veterans need help, and sitting on the sidelines is not an option.

Photobucket

Charlie then proceeded to award each of the groups with $4,500 checks to help with vital services that will directly benefit 4th District veterans and military families.

Photobucket

As the election comes to a close next week, it is important to remember the sacrifices our troops have given up to secure our rights to vote and live in a free country. Too often we forget about those who defend our liberties when the talking heads and career politicians put partisanship ahead of solving problems.

But as stated at the beginning of this blog, Charlie Brown is running a different kind of campaign. He’s making sure the good of the district and country comes before political talking points and real results are produced.

As we head into these final days, your help is crucial. Tom McClintock and his friends at the RNC are not about to go quietly.

So if you are in northern california over the next few days, please consider stopping by to pitch in, as we are going to need every bit of help we can get to ensure Charlie finishes this mission.

Photobucket

Please consider a donation today, or plan a trip to help Get Out The Vote here in the 4th District.

Photobucket

Join the hundreds of boots on the ground making this election possible and help elect a Congressman who will stand up for our troops, veterans, and their families. The time is now to elect Charlie Brown to Congress.

Thanks,

CA-04: Charlie Brown BBQ Town Hall in Quincy (photoblog)

The air was chilly in Quincy on Saturday as the Charlie Brown for Congress team held its 2nd to the last BBQ Town Hall meeting at Pioneer Park. People from around the greater Plumas County area; from Quincy to Greenville, Portola, Graeagle and all the way out from Chico came to hear Charlie speak and ask him the questions at the forefront of the 4th District’s minds.

Photobucket

Quincy, a small town of about 2,000, is known as a “mountain community.” Nestled in between the Plumas, Lassen and Tahoe National Forests, Quincy is a picture-perfect vision of yesteryear.

Photobucket

From the beautiful late 19th Century homes to the 40’s-style Main Street, everything about Quincy reminds you of a time and place that brings a smile to even the hardest of hearts.

Photobucket

The crowd braved the surprisingly early fall chill to meet Charlie and ask the questions they’ve been waiting for. As the burgers were being flipped, people poured in to sit under the Rotary pavilion and chat about the news in town.

Photobucket

Photobucket

When Charlie arrived, the crowd gathered around to hear an introduction by Plumas County Supervisor-elect Lori Simpson, just fresh off her electoral victory against a well-entrenched incumbent. Lori spoke about the need for change and how Charlie represents a new breed of leadership to move this district forward.

Photobucket

After Lori’s gracious introduction, Charlie told the group assembled about the importance of getting out the vote and making those phone calls, knocking on those doors, and talking to every neighbor about this campaign and the importance of voting.

Photobucket

The concerns of people in the Northern counties are a little different than they are in Roseville or Orangevale. Logging is a major issue, and one of the first questions revolved around the balance between the timber industry and the environmental concerns associated with it.

For Charlie, it was a familiar issue. A long-time proponent of healthy forests, Charlie explained the thinning techniques that are actually helping to keep fire levels down and encouraging new growth in the forests.

Photobucket

Another question revolved around hunting. A long-time skeet-shooter, Charlie believes in access to public lands for hunters, sports shooters, fishermen, hikers and off-road vehicles. Charlie owns guns and uses them frequently, and is a member of the Beale Gun & Rod Club where he shoots targets.

Photobucket

One woman asked a question revolved around housing markets. In Plumas County, the housing market has fluctuated wildly, putting home values in real jeopardy. Charlie has been an ardent supporter of standing up to predatory lenders so real people can stay in their homes. He is also calling for consistent, bi-partisan oversight by both the Executive branch and Congress to ensure the lenders don’t take advantage of another American family.

Photobucket

Finally, Charlie was asked about broadband internet access. Back in 2000, America was number one in the world in broadband access.  Today, America has fallen to 15th.  Charlie believes we can do better than that.  He believes we should not be satisfied until every community in America is wired so that everyone can compete in the global economy.

Next weekend will be the final Charlie Brown Town Hall BBQ at Condon Park in Grass Valley. If you can make it, please join us, get some free burgers (we have veggie burgers too), and ask the questions that you want Charlie to answer. See you then!

CA-04: GOTV efforts will win this thing–Only thing missing? YOU

(stay for change. – promoted by David Dayen)

With only two weeks until Election Day, it is more critical than ever to get out and help bring Charlie to victory. For months now, the Charlie Brown campaign for Congress has been burning up the phone lines and pounding the pavement to get our positive message of “patriotism before partisanship” out to the voters of the 4th Congressional District.

One of our top canvassers is Nate Cox.

Photobucket

Nate is 22 years old and a recent graduate of the Sierra College Fire Academy. While waiting for his first assignment, he’s taking time to help send Charlie to Congress. While following Nate around South Placer County, we learned first-hand about how this race is shaping up in our favor and how we need every available boot on the ground to bring Charlie to victory.

“I’ve never really been interested in politics until I heard about Charlie,” Nate said. “One of my roommates was involved in the campaign and told me about this guy named Charlie Brown running for Congress. After hearing about him and meeting him, I knew I needed to do whatever I could to get this guy elected. Plus, how cool would it be to say I helped get a Congressman elected?”

Photobucket

As we pulled up to the first house, Nate explained how he likes to approach each individual and find some way to connect before even meeting face-to-face. “You can find out so much about a person by their driveway and front lawn. Bumper stickers, toys in the yard… they tell you a lot about who you’re going to talk to.”

Photobucket

The first person we talked to was a man named Gary. A registered Republican, Gary was a little bit of a tough nut to crack. “I’ve never voted for a Democrat in my life. Why should I support your guy?” Nate explained Charlie’s 26 years of service in the Air Force, his staunch support for 2nd Amendment rights, and his commitment to balancing the federal budget. Nate also gave Gary a copy of the recent Veterans Press endorsement of Charlie. After a good five minutes of discussion, Gary gave a big grin. “You sure know your stuff. You’re making me think, and I’m not sure that’s such a good thing for my Party. I’ll check out your website and think about it.”

Photobucket

A few “not home” houses later, we came upon another Placer County resident. Iris, a 55-year old school teacher, answered the door. She immediately identified herself as a supporter. “Everyone in this household is for Charlie. There’s no doubt about that. How do I get a lawn sign?” This one was a little too easy.

Photobucket

Nate made “the ask.”

“Is there any way you’d be able to help volunteer some time?”

“Only if I can get that button you’re wearing in return!”

Photobucket

Over the course of the afternoon, it became clear that canvassing in Roseville was a pretty enjoyable experience. Mild weather, beautiful suburban scenery, and pleasant people abound.

The final location of the canvassing trip was an apartment complex. As each door was knocked and literature was left behind, new supporter after new supporter was being identified. Our final knock of the afternoon was to a young college student named Joe.

Photobucket

Joe readily identified himself as someone not interested in politics. Joe admitted to not having ever voted until this Presidential Primary. “I just don’t see how it affects me.”

Nate found a way to identify with the student. “Do you drive to school?”

“Yes,” he replied.

“Do you like having smooth roads or driving over potholes messing up your suspension?”

Joe responded “No one likes bottoming out.”

“Then you have a reason to vote. These are the people who decide what to do with your tax money. You can vote for someone, like Charlie, who will work to bring money back to fix our highways and infrastructure and make life a little easier for you.”

Nate is an unusual kid: not appearing to have a care in the world, he surprised us by using his passion for helping Charlie bring in new supporters. A lot of the people we talked to had questions about Charlie’s economic positions and what he was going to do to bring jobs into the district. With the release of our new TV ad, we were able to speak to several voters while the commcercial was playing on their TVs! You can see our newest ad on youtube as well:

We need your help to keep this ad running. Click here to contribute. Any money you donate will be used to fight the slime machine Tom McClintock is employing against Charlie. The time is now, and you can make a difference wherever you are to help Charlie win this election.

All told, 12 Charlie supporters were identified from those that were home, compared to 3 McClintock supporters for the entire day. The votes are out there, but we need your help to bring this victory home.

With one of the best ground games in the nation being implemented here in the 4th District, we have a distinct advantage over our opponent. While he’s busy slinging mud, we’ve built a volunteer base that has dominated in every way imaginable. But in these final 2 weeks, your help will be a crucial addition to our winning strategy.

As GOTV progresses, please come spend some time in CA-04. Walk some neighborhoods with Nate and our team. Make some phone calls in one of our 7 offices to remind voters about Charlie Brown and his positive message of change. If you can’t make it to our district, please send a contribution to Charlie and help us support the flood of volunteers we will be hosting in these final days. You can also contact our campaign headquarters to find out other ways to help.

We appreciate your help, and look forward to seeing you on the campaign trail.

Sincerely,

Neil Pople

CA-04: Charlie Brown BBQ Town Hall in Orangevale (photoblog)

(Looks like fun! – promoted by Brian Leubitz)

With less than 3 weeks in the election, the Charlie Brown for Congress campaign continues to dominate in voter contact in the 4th Congressional District. As dozens of dedicated canvassers, hundreds of volunteers, and the candidate himself hit the pavement to spread Charlie’s positive message of patriotism before partisanship, its becoming increasingly clear who has the advantage in this race.

Photobucket

As with every Saturday for the last month, Charlie held another Brown BBQ Town Hall meeting, this time at the Orangevale Community Center in Sacramento County. Orangevale, a quiet suburb of Sacramento, is not accustomed to much political attention from campaigns. Folks came from all over the area to hear Charlie and ask him the questions that matter to them.

Photobucket

Photobucket

Introducing Charlie was the Vice-Mayor of Citrus Heights, James Shelby. Mr. Shelby is also the President of the Greater Sacramento Urban League. He has been a tireless advocate for Sacramento, and his support for Charlie runs strong.

Photobucket

After Vice-Mayor Shelby’s gracious remarks, Charlie introduced himself to the gathered crowd. He told them about courage, sacrifice, and a willingness to put political ideology aside in the interest of the greater good.

Photobucket

The first question came from a young and recently homeless man who was riding his bike and saw our gathering. While pre-conceived notions were definitely in play, the young man asked Charlie a very poignant question: what would he do on the rehabilitative-side of homeless prevention beyond simply saying that more shelters should be built?

Photobucket

To many in the audience, it was a somewhat banal question, but Charlie hit the nail on the head: its going to take a public/private solution to help give a hand up-not a hand-out to those who have found themselves homeless. Most people don’t know this, but Charlie has been advocating for the homeless for years. One in every 3 homeless men are veterans, and that number skyrockets to 40% in the 4th District. As foreclosure rates steadily increase, jobs become tougher to find and the current conflict bringing an influx of returning soldiers with psychological traumas, the homeless population is going to see an increase. Rather than simply housing them and keeping them homeless, Charlie said he would like to ask Congress to look into finding rehabilitative measures that can make these men & women productive members of society again.

Photobucket

Another question came from a woman worried about Wall Street. Like so many Americans right now, she’s worried about the recent crash in the stock market. She wanted to know whether Charlie had a plan for our crippled economy and relieve middle-class Americans from burdensome taxes, and what his first economic priority would be in Congress.

Photobucket

Charlie’s answer was simple: balance the budget. One of the toughest jobs up ahead for the 112th Congress is finding a way to fix some of the many financial errors we’ve seen exposed these last few months. Charlie knows that we need to erase the massive debt our country owes to foreign governments like Saudi Arabia and China. In addition to the elimination of taxes like the Alternative Minimum Tax and the Widow’s Tax for military families, Charlie also wants to fight for additional tax relief for small business innovators.

Photobucket

As the wind blew hard and surprisingly cold, Charlie and those gathered enjoyed each other’s company and walked away hopeful for Orangevale’s future.

This weekend, Charlie will be hosting another Brown BBQ Town Hall up in Quincy. Please check out our website at www.charliebrownforcongress.org for more details. If you can make it up, we would be glad to share a burger or hot dog with you!

CA-04: Brown BBQ Town Hall in Rocklin (photoblog)

Just the other weekend, Charlie Brown participated in the 4th Brown BBQ Town Hall meeting, a great opportunity for voters and Charlie to connect and ask the questions that are at the top of their minds.

The countdown to Election Day moves forward, as does the Charlie Brown campaign. In an event-filled day that included an eggplant festival, two barbeques, a solar home tour and an Orange to Blue special DailyKos “Hell to Pay” fundraiser, Charlie was able to meet and talk directly with voters at Johnson-Springview Park in Rocklin, CA.

Photobucket

As the bad weather lifted, the crowds began to gather at the park Saturday. Over 85 people showed up for the chance to ask Charlie a wide variety of questions, ranging from public transportation to the economy to healthcare.

Introducing Charlie was a pair of Placer County leaders, two men who sit on opposite sides of the aisle but came together in support of the right candidate.

Photobucket

First up to introduce Charlie was Larry Menth. Larry is the Vice-Chair of the Rocklin Planning Commission , a dedicated Democrat and leader in the Rocklin community. He spoke about Charlie’s ability to build bridges, and the pride he has working with someone who will take action in Congress.

Photobucket

Following Larry, Loomis’ Mayor Pro-Tem, Walt Scherer , picked up on Charlie’s message of patriotism before partisanship. A lifelong Republican, Walt has seen his share of partisan politics here in the 4th, and has fought long and hard to keep Loomis the small, friendly town it is.

Photobucket

After introductions, Charlie took questions from the audience. The first came from a young woman concerned about the need for new and improved light rail/ mass transit and asked Charlie for his thoughts on the subject. A long-time proponent of mass transit, Charlie wants to ensure that we all have freedom-freedom to ride the bus, a bike, or your car-and wants to make sure our transportation needs are met in this very critical intersection of commerce.

Photobucket

Another question revolved around the recent woes on Wall Street. One gentleman asked what Charlie was looking for in any type of “rescue plan” that he could get behind. Charlie was quick to point out that any type of financial rescue would have to include consistent bi-partisan oversight and a strict no Golden Parachute clause for the irresponsible executives who helped create the mess we’re in. Charlie also called for near-term security and liquidity for the credit market so businesses can get back to actually doing business.

Photobucket

As the town hall closed, someone asked Charlie if healthcare would be a topic in the next debate with Tom McClintock. Its interesting to note that someone would ask, given the two most recent bills on healthcare in the CA state senate that Tom has been involved with. Senator McClintock was the only member of the CA Senate to vote against SB 1563 this year, the Autism Insurance bill, (and for the second time). 1563 did not have any cost associated with it, and only established a workgroup to examine the current insurance coverage for autism and make recommendations for equitable coverage in the future. In addition to this was the authorship of SB 1669, a healthcare bill that would extend the pre-existing condition clause from 12 months to 10 years. Healthcare, one of the country’s top issues, will most definitely be an issue in this race, and Charlie is looking forward to the explanation Tom has for his actions while in the state legislature.

Photobucket

Photobucket

With 3 weeks left in this campaign, the air is full of electricity here in the 4th Congressional District. Charlie is still plugging away, talking to voters the old fashioned way at town halls and special events like this. If you’re in the area and interested in meeting Charlie and asking the questions that matter to you, please check out our website for details. This last weekend we were in Orangevale at the Orangevale Community Center. Our photoblog will be released tomorrow on that event. This upcoming Saturday we will be in Quincy, so come up and join us for what promises to be a great event!

CA-04: Charlie Brown holds 3rd BBQ Town Hall (photoblog)

As the Charlie Brown for Congress campaign jumps into high-gear, the people of El Dorado County got an opportunity to hear from 4th Congressional District’s very own Charlie Brown at our 3rd BBQ Town Hall at Bijou Park in South Lake Tahoe. Approximately 100 voters were on hand to enjoy the beautiful facilities, some free food, and the opportunity to ask Charlie Brown the questions on their minds.

Photobucket

Introducing Charlie was El Dorado County Supervisor Norma Santiago. Norma has been fighting tirelessly on the county board of supervisors over the last 3 years on the important issues facing the district and El Dorado County: water, economic development, conservancy and energy.

Photobucket

After the kind words from Norma, Charlie gave his narrative to the audience. Over the last 3 decades, Charlie Brown was serving his country-first as an air force intelligence officer, then as a teacher, and finally by serving on the Roseville Police Department. Charlie’s is a lifetime spent serving the country and the district, and to tell his story is to tell the story of the 4th District.

Photobucket

The first question came from Supervisor Santiago, who asked what Charlie’s priorities would be in Congress. His answer was simple: he wants to work towards solutions by reaching across party lines on our crumbling economic situation. With our economy in such dire straits, Charlie knows that fiscal sanity is only achievable by getting all sides to work together.

Photobucket

Another question came from a Korean War vet, who wanted know what Charlie thought about taxes and living on a fixed income-a problem many are facing as the country faces economic woes. Charlie is a retiree himself, living on a fixed income. He understands, first hand, how families are affected by rising gas, grocery, healthcare and other costs. Charlie explained his desire to see marriage penalty relief, an extension of the child tax credit, estate tax relief, and elimination of the Alternative Minimum Tax.

Photobucket

As the crowd continued with their questions, more passersby came to listen to Charlie and contribute to the dialogue.

Photobucket

Afterwards, Charlie was swarmed by the crowd with dozens more questions regarding veterans’ benefits, tribal lands, alternative energies, water issues and more. All in all, Charlie Brown won over new supporters and energized dozens of new volunteers. They know full-well that a vote for Charlie is a vote for responsible growth, clean alternative energies, middle-class tax relief, and a vote to put patriotism before partisanship.

Photobucket

This upcoming weekend, voters here in placer County will be able to participate in Charlie’s 4th Town Hall BBQ at Johnson-Springview Park in Rocklin. More details can be found on our website.

PS: You can also get outside media coverage of Charlie’s visit by visiting the Tahoe Daily Tribune’s most recent article: http://www.tahoedailytribune.c…

PPS: Tonight is also the first debate between Charlie and Tom McClintock. You can catch a livestream on the Chico Enterprise-Record website.

CA-04: Charlie Brown Holds 2nd BBQ Town Hall (photoblog)

This last weekend, Charlie Brown held his 2nd neighborhood BBQ Town Hall in the city of Oroville. The crowd gathered in the Oroville Veterans Hall, a fitting place for a meeting that consisted largely of veterans and their families.

Photobucket

Introducing Charlie was the Mayor of Oroville, Steve Jernigan. Having local officials introduce your candidate is nothing new, but the interesting point about Steve Jernigan is the highly respected Republican Mayor of Oroville. Steve is a sought-after commodity in Republican politics. Everyone from Mitt Romney to John McCain to Ron Paul have sought his endorsement, but only one has been given: to Charlie Brown.

Photobucket

Steve told the gathered crowd about the importance of putting patriotism before partisanship, and how real work gets done by those who are willing to put the country first.

After taking the microphone from Mayor Jernigan, Charlie began to explain his 26-year history in the United States Air Force and his experience as a teacher, Roseville Police Department employee, and the chair of a $5 million credit union.

Photobucket

Most of the question from the crowd revolved around the economy, and one man asked Charlie how more jobs could be brought to Oroville and the rest of the district. Charlie’s answer surprised some: he could get new jobs to the district by pushing for alternative energy.

Under Charlie’s energy plan, thousands of new jobs can be created by transitioning to “green collar” jobs that produce solar, wind and biofuel energy. With a new wind farm being proposed in Lassen County, right here in the district, new jobs can be brought right here to the district. We simply need the leadership to make it happen, and Charlie is the man for the job.

Photobucket

Another question brought up during the town hall revolved around Charlie’s ideas on tax cuts. Charlie explained his view on taxes, promising tax relief for the middle class while pointing out that Tom McClintock’s Auburn Dam would cost tax payers $10 billion. Charlie explained exactly what taxes he would eliminate: the Alternative Minimum Tax, Widow’s Tax for Military Families, and concurrent receipt to name but a few.

Photobucket

More than a few veterans were in the audience, so the conversation naturally turned to military-talk. One veteran, a fellow Vietnam vet, asked Charlie about what changes he would like to see to the VA. Charlie voiced his support for mandatory VA funding, specifically regarding disabled veterans receiving their full benefits. He also again pointed to the Widow’s Tax on military survivor benefits.

Photobucket

The day was full of substance and spirits were high, as Charlie has proven once again that he is the only candidate in this race concerned about serving the needs of the district and having the desire to listen to the voters in California’s 4th Congressional District.

Photobucket

This weekend, Charlie travelled to South Lake Tahoe for the 3rd BBQ Town Hall meeting at Bijou Park. Details from that exciting day are coming soon!

CA-04: Charlie Brown’s 1st BBQ Town Hall (photoblog)

( – promoted by David Dayen)

With a little less than 50 days until the November 4th Election, the stakes couldn’t be higher in the race for California’s 4th House of Representatives seat. We have an awesome opportunity to put a different kind of leader in Congress, one who is results-driven and ready to put patriotism before partisanship.

Photobucket

Charlie Brown has been known to be the local favorite in this campaign. He is the only candidate in this race who has lived, worked, and raised his family in this district, now going on 17 years. And as such, Charlie Brown is hitting the road every day of this campaign to make his case to the voters. In the first of a series of BBQ Town hall meetings, Charlie visited El Dorado Hills’ Bertelsen Park to meet with voters and take their questions.

Photobucket

As the burgers were being flipped, Charlie chatted it up with people one-on-one, Diet Coke in hand, discussing the important issues of the economy, the foreclosure crisis, infrastructure, rising gas prices and the war in Iraq.

Photobucket

Introducing Charlie was an El Dorado County giant– former United States Congressman Jerry Waldie. Waldie, a World War II veteran, served in the House for 8 years before running for California’s governor in 1974 against Jerry Brown.

Charlie then took to the “stage,” a grassy area by the picnic tables, to address the crowd and get their input on a host of issues.

Photobucket

One question that was asked from a local voter revolved around the issue of privacy and spying on American citizens. Charlie, a former intelligence officer in the Air Force, explained his role working on surveillance programs for the National Security Agency (NSA). He explained his view and drew thunderous applause from the group.

Photobucket

Charlie was also asked questions regarding a host of local issues, most notably water. Like everyone who lives in the 4th District, Charlie understands the importance water flowing through the 4th district has on California agriculture, and why adequate supply and proper stewardship (including keeping all of it from being shipped to Southern California) is so critical to the future of our region and our state. You may have also heard that it’s been especially dry out here in Northern California this summer.

Photobucket

Overall, a healthy-sized group with a healthy-sized appetite for burgers and answers got their fill in El Dorado Hills this weekend. Next week, Charlie is heading up to Oroville to continue the conversation. Please check out our website for dates and times of when Charlie comes to your neighborhood.

CA-04: Charlie Brown and Wesley Clark show the true meaning of patriotism (photoblog)

Charlie Brown was joined by retired General Wesley Clark recently in a special volunteer project to serve our troops overseas. In conjunction with Democrats Work, a national organization geared to get people involved in community-building volunteering, folks gathered to create care packages to send to troops currently deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan.

Photobucket

The sweltering Northern California summer couldn’t stop people from across the district from making their way to the Roseville Opera House. Over 100 men and women of all ages and political affiliations joined Charlie and General Clark in this project.

Photobucket

Photobucket

College students, veterans, mothers and businessmen alike joined together to show their support for the troops. Democrats, Republicans and Independents didn’t care about presidential choice or their stance on the war itself. Everyone gathered had one goal in mind: to send a small piece of comfort to the men & women doing their duty to protect our freedom.

Photobucket

Photobucket

Words and talking points from a political campaign seemed crass to Charlie, so our approach was non-partisan. This wasn’t about parties and their ideologies. It was about our soldiers and putting a smile on their faces, even if only for a brief moment.

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

After each package was personally created, our volunteers sat down and wrote personal letters for each box. General Clark and Charlie also wrote their own personal messages. One note, from a Republican, has been transcribed:

Dear Soldier,

I want to express my deepest gratitude and appreciation for your sacrifice and service to our country. Without your service we would not be able to enjoy the freedoms that we hold…I sincerely hope that you enjoy this care package and that it provides you some comfort & entertainment in what we all know is a harsh environment.

Take care and thank you once again.

Photobucket

Another note, signed by a college student:

Dear Patriot-

We thank you for your courage, professionalism, and dedication to duty. You go in harm’s way every day to serve our country, and we are proud of your commitment. Please return safely as soon as possible.

Photobucket

Finally, a veteran of the Korean War wrote this note:

Dear Guys-

There aren’t enough words to describe my appreciation for the job you are doing four us & this great country. Saying thank you is only a starter.

I’m a Korean War vet-put in time in New Foundland, Battin Island (Goose Bay Labrador as well) as part of a joint services job building radar sites.

Stay safe & well…

With My Very Best Wishes

Photobucket

Thank you for helping us bring so many people together to do some good. Thank you Wes Clark, for your service to this nation and your willingness to roll up your sleeves & continue serving. And thank you Charlie, for taking leadership and proving that all political stripes can come together for our men & women in uniform.

CA-04: Charlie Brown, General Wes Clark, and the Promises Kept

It has been said that actions speak louder than words.

Thursday, September 4th marked another day on the calendar for many people. But for some veterans down on their luck in California’s 4th Congressional District, it was a day for hope. Retired Lieutenant Colonel Charlie Brown was joined by retired General Wesley Clark for a check presentation ceremony to three very special veteran’s service providers: Rebuild Hope, the Greater Oroville Homeless Coalition, and Cottage Housing.

Photobucket

$30,000 was donated to these three groups from Charlie’s campaign-something no other political campaign has done in known history. Charlie Brown has been committed to doing good right now through his Promises Kept Veteran’s Charity Challenge giveaway. The results have been nearly $55,000 in campaign money since Charlie started this unprecedented event back in March 2008.

Photobucket

Josh Steward, OIF veteran

The day’s events started with a speech by Operation Iraqi Freedom veteran Josh Steward, who came to the meeting in support of Charlie and to tell his story of how a former Veteran’s Charity Challenge recipient, Soldier’s Angels, helped him get back on track after a terrible accident while in service.

Photobucket

Dwayne & Carol Zanon, Greater Oroville Homeless Coalition

The 2nd runner-up in the Promises Kept Veteran’s Charity Challenge was the Greater Oroville Homeless Coalition. The Coalition helps homeless families or those who are at risk of becoming homeless, acquire, access, or maintain safe, temporary or permanent shelter—often veterans, or women with children. Charlie and the campaign presented the group with a $5,000 check. This money will be instrumental in their development for many months to come.

Photobucket

Dana Hendrickson, Rebuild Hope

The 1st runner-up, Rebuild Hope, is a relatively new non-profit who’s goal is to help keep soldiers and their families financially stable through tough times. The group received $10,000 from the Brown campaign, which will help drastically increase their scope and the number of families they can assist. Rebuild Hope is a national non-profit organization dedicated to mobilizing individual Americans to improving the financial health of severely injured soldiers, veterans and their families during their transition from military to civilian life. They are the only group in the nation to provide such services.

Finally, the Promises Kept winner, Cottage Housing, received a check from Charlie for $15,000. Cottage Housing creates healing residential communities where homeless people are able to support one another while accessing the full range of supportive services they need to make the transition from the streets to self-sufficiency.

Tim Burke, a veteran and one-time recipient of assistance from the group, said that the pride he felt in knowing that he was “a tax-payer instead of a burden” helped motivate him and he now works with Cottage Housing to help get his brothers & sisters off the streets.

Gen. Wes Clark

With General Wesley Clark on hand, Charlie was doing something amazing. He was shining a spotlight on a need in not only this district, but this country as well. Too often our men & women are bravely sent off to fight & defend our freedoms. When they come home from battle, no one seems to want to care for them. It takes groups like Cottage Housing, Rebuild Hope and the Greater Oroville Homeless Coalition to provide services to help get through tough times. Now that they are receiving the attention they deserve, maybe more help will come.

General Clark said it best: “Everybody needs money and wants support, but this is the first time I’ve come to a candidate who gives back as he raises.”
