CA-11: Michael J Fox endorses Jerry for his stem cell positions

Michael J Fox, who is fighting a very public battle against Parkinson’s disease, has endorsed Jerry McNerney for Congress over his Republican opponent, Richard Pombo.  Jerry strongly supports stem cell research, unlike Pombo, who voted against the Castle stem cell research bill (Google cache of a PDF here)  Just one more reason to vote for Jerry!

In the extended, you will find the full press release.

Today Michael J. Fox strongly endorsed Democratic Congressional candidate Jerry McNerney. As a vocal proponent of medical research, Fox is supporting candidates who support all forms of stem cell research in races where their opponents simply do not.

“America is about hope, about promise, about always moving forward, and we deserve leaders who are willing to deliver that hope to their constituents,” Fox stated.

“The idea of restricting one of the most promising areas of research is shortsighted. We have no way of knowing where the next break will emerge,” Fox continued.

Stem cell research has the potential to improve the lives of millions of people living with diseases and disorders including cancer, diabetes, spinal cord injuries, heart disease, Alzheimer’s disease, and even Parkinson’s disease.

Fox is committed to electing to Congress individuals like Jerry McNerney who will support expanding the current policy on stem cell research. McNerney’s opponent, Rep. Richard Pombo, voted to uphold President George W. Bush’s veto of the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act in July 2006 and had previously voted against the legislation.

“I enthusiastically support and endorse Jerry McNerney for Congress. By supporting stem cell research, Jerry McNerney puts America on a path that speaks to who we are as a nation,” Fox concluded.

CA-11: DTS Breaking Hard for Jerry

The Stockton Record took a very unscientific poll during the week.  While the information should be taken with a grain of salt the size of Nebraska, the results were great for us:

Rep. Richard Pombo’s political life rests on the number of Republican voters who cast ballots for him Tuesday.

Democrats are not likely to vote for the seven-term incumbent – and voters who decline to state a political preference are supporting Democrat Jerry McNerney by a margin of more than 2-to-1, according to a Record survey of such voters taken last week. (Stockton Record 11.05.06)

So, let’s make the calls and walk the precincts to seal the deal.

Prop 90 Videos from Oregon

A few weeks ago I wrote about a poll that showed that Oregonians would really like to be rid of their Prop 90-type measure, Measure 37.  Last week, the No on 90 folks released a series of videos of people in Oregon who are now dealing with the ramifications.  These videos detail stories of people who are trying to fight developers, and losing due to the effects of Measure 37.

Here’s the link to the first, where you will find links to the other 4 videos.

Here’s the first:

Odds and Ends 11/4

This will be a short one. I know it’s a busy weekend. Go out and rustle up some votes!
Teasers: Field Poll on the infratstructure bonds, Arnold using another corporate slush fund, Prop 90 divisiveness, and more!

  • The Field Poll(PDF) on the Infrastructure Bonds was released.  It seems the media blitz in support, without a corresponding blitz in opposition, is having an effect.  All 5 bonds are favored now. However, while I still stick to my statement that the Field Poll is the best in the state, I’m still not convinced that all of these are going to pass.
    • 1B (Transportation): 56 Yes, 28 No, 16 Undecided
    • 1C (Housing): 51 Yes, 30 No, 19 Undecided
    • 1D (Schools): 56 Yes, 29 No, 15 Undecided
    • 1E (Disaster Preparedness): 53 Yes, 27 No, 20 Undecided
    • 84 (Water/Parks):  51 Yes, 31 No, 18 Undecided
  • Tony Strickland doesn’t pay his taxes on time.  It seems that the GOP candidate for Controller, you know the guy responsible for auditing state government and cutting checks for the state, can’t seem to manage his own bills. Whoops!
  • Schwarzenegger wants an Iraq withdrawal deadline.  Why you wanna cut and run Arnold?
  • Beyond Chron notes that The Bayview Redevelopment Plan is causing some typically progressive votes to shift in favor of Prop 90 and is dividing San Francisco Progressives.  That is a shame, because that is exactly what Howie Rich wants.  The New York libretarian seeks to divide the vote by sneaking in dangerous restrictions on land-use regulation with a prop that is ostensibly about eminent domain.
  • Arnold is planning a trade mission to Mexico.  It’s Paid for by a corporate slush fund.  Great, not only is he assuming his victory, he’s also assuming nobody will care that he’s whoring out for special interests.  $113million says we are right Governator.
  • CalSTRS will stop making investments in companies that give big bucks to statewide candidates.  Seems like a good idea to me.
  • Justice O’Connor says that our Judiciary is under attack.  She’s right, it’s from the Right.  It’s why we need to push from the Left.  No on William McGuiness.
  • CA-04: More Revelations of John Doolittle’s Corruption

Well, suprise, suprise, out come more revelations about just how corrupt John Doolittle is.  This time, two lobbying groups, supported by the Malaysian government and a South Korean conglomerate, shelled out almost $30K for a trip for Doolittle and his twelve-year old daughter.  You know, she had to get massages and hang out at the beach in order for John to truly understand the Malay culture.

Early last year, two little-known nonprofit groups paid for Rep. John T. Doolittle (R-Calif.) and his 12-year-old daughter to travel to South Korea and Malaysia. Their last stop was the Berjaya Beach & Spa Resort on the Malaysian island of Langkawi, where they bunked at an oceanfront chalet staffed with a personal butler, got massages and rode water scooters on Burau Bay.

Doolittle’s junket, which cost $29,400, was among the most expensive privately sponsored trips by members of Congress in recent years. The two groups that split the bills were not ordinary nonprofits. They were fronts for vigorous lobbying campaigns bankrolled by foreign entities and were operated by a Washington lobbying firm, Alexander Strategy Group, according to public records and people who worked with the firm. (WaPo 11/03/06)

Oh well, you know, it’s no big deal.  It’s just a way for Congressman to get to know foreign cultures so they can really vote knowledgably. It’s way more important than, say, actually legislating, or spending more than 114 days in session. Yep, 114 days, that’s all they work they have to do.  That’s not even 25 weeks/year.

But, back to the cultural aspect.  It seems that this trip wasn’t a properly registered “cultural interchange program”:

Federal law prohibits members of Congress from knowingly accepting overseas travel from foreign governments except as part of a cultural interchange program approved by the State Department. The travel in this case was not part of such a program, government officials said. House rules ban members from taking trips paid for by lobbyists or foreign agents. Nonprofits and their officers are prohibited under federal tax law from using a charitable organization for private commercial gain.

Is there anybody this man won’t take money from?  The greed that this man has shown, all the while playing off of fear of his base is disgusting.  He has his hand out at every moment, and conveniently takes a nice 15% for his family by hiring his wife to do his “fund raising.”  Just who is behind all this, well, it’s a familiar name: Abramoff

Once a major lobbying firm, Alexander Strategy Group closed down early this year. Its owner, Edwin A. Buckham, former chief of staff to now-departed House majority leader Tom DeLay, is under investigation in the Jack Abramoff lobbying scandal, according to lawyers and witnesses with knowledge of the probe.

Time for a new Congressman, CA-04.

    McClintock is “totally wrong”

Ouch, that’s gotta hurt, especially when it comes from your “running mate”.  I missed this one when I did the Odds and Ends, but it’s probably worth a separate post and FP status.  Salladay has the info:

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, speaking to reporters in Oakland today, went after state Sen. Tom McClintock — the Republican candidate for lieutenant governor and his supposed running mate. Times reporter Peter Nicholas writes that the Republican governor today was asked about McClintock’s opposition to the infrastructure bonds on Tuesday’s ballot and the governor, who championed the bonds, replied:

“Sen. McClintock, I appreciate his opinion, but he’s totally wrong on that one. Because if you go his way of thinking, then we will never rebuild California.”

See, the real problem is that we aren’t getting enough money to the source of the problem.  The root cause is Prop 13, the massive subsidy for property owners.  Especially grevious is the inclusion of commercial property, which changes hands far less often, and has increased in value very significantly since 1978.  You think Arnold really wants to answer the real questions?

Well, at least Arnold is right on this one: Tom McClintock is totally wrong for California.

    Odds and Ends 11/3

It’s Friday, the election is Tuesday.  Jerry and Charlie need lots of volunteers, see Ethics in Congress’s diary.  If you are in SoCal, I’m sure Francine Busby could use some volunteers.  Also, Democratic Victory HQ’s will be needing volunteers. You can find locations near you here. You can sign up here.

Ok, teasers: Field Poll, McClintock is crazy, Laura Bush needs to communicate more with her husband, there aren’t enough absentee ballots in SD, and more!

  • The Field Poll on the Down Ballot Race came out today. Todd has the full scoop.  Short summary: Brown and Lockyer up by a lot,  Bowen and Chiang up slightly outside the margin of error, Garamendi is up within the MoE, and Cruz is down slightly out of the margin of error.
  •

  • McClintock and Garamendi are pretty much dead even . Part of that is McClintock’s residual name ID, name ID that doesn’t connect to his positions on the issues. Part of it is McClintock’s pinning blame on Garamendi for the Executive Life collapse.  Trouble is: Garamendi helped 90% of policyholders.  Garamendi couldn’t make money appear where there was none. Folks, there is no there there.  McClintock is trying to distract voters from his beliefs because he knows that they are too extreme for California. Arnold and Tom are a team made in heaven, they are both trying to play moderates on TV.  I guess Arnold is just a better actor.
  • The California Majority Report notes an ad that will be put out in the Bay area just in time for Laura Bush’s visit. (She’s campaigning for Pombo now! I guess she’s against endangered species too.) The ad questions whether Shrub will be able to address energy independence, but makes clear that California can address it on Nov. 7.
  •

  • Speaking of the First Lady, it seems she wants a more civil debate over Iraq.  Interesting…perhaps she should talk to her husband, and husband’s BFF, Dick Cheney.  You know the ones that said that the “Democrat Party” wants the terrorists to win.  That’s civil debate? Saying that your political opponents want fellow citizens to be murdered.  Of course she says this while campaigning for Doolittle, the man who wouldn’t know civil if it hit him over the head with a frying pan.  And, hey jackasses, it’s the Democratic Party. Democrat is a noun, it can’t describe a party. Democratic is an adjective. But, hey, what does the GOP know of the root word, democracy. They were for it before they were against it before they were for it in Iraq.
  • Also at the Majority Report, Assemblyman Frommer discusses Arnold’s hypocritical stand on campaign fund raising.  He was against special interests before he was for them.
  •

  • Incompetence in our elections. Well surprise, surprise, another problem with our elections.  It seems San Diego didn’t print enough absentee ballots, so they are sending out photocopies of the real ballots.  I’m serious.  C’mon, we need a “pushy” SoS, like Debra Bowen, who will make sure that our elections are run cleanly.
  •

  • Yet another reason why Prop 83, Jessica’s Law, is a road to hell paved with good intentions.  Quite simply, Prop 83 will not make us safer. A study by the parole board was released today saying that the ambiguites of the Law will cause the board to scramble to find what to do with offenders, may cause some offenders to stop registering, and in an earlier draft, said that “restricting where a parolee lives does little to actually protect the community and sends a false sense of security.”
  • Oh look, we are officially the boogeyman now. “San Francisco values” is officially the right-wing spin of choice. Apparently the GOP media machine believes that our values of tolerance and respect offend people in the Central Valley, Nebraska, and Georgia.  As Chris Lehane said in the article it’s not going to work: “like they’re talking about the Haight-Ashbury in 1969. It’s not going to move anybody. It’s basically just going to excite the base who are already on board.” Oh, and Mark Morford says that Dick Cheney hates you. It’s probably true.
  • Francine Busby is still fighting in CA-50.  The polls show a fairly tight race.  The recent revelations about a grand jury investigation certainly won’t help Brian Bilbray at all.
  •

  • OOps, maybe the prison transfer won’t happen yet after all.  Another court hearing is being held today, don’t expect this to cruise through smoothly, ever.  There is too much money tied up in this.  Kinda sick, huh? The prison-industrial complex has grown too big for its britches.
  •

  • The case against Raymond Lee Oyler is pretty strong, so say the prosecution in the Esperanza fire murder case.
  • The Slate Mailer as a Tool of Deception

UPDATE: Art Torres has released a statement about these mailers: “The oil companies are trying to win this campaign with deceptive mailers.  The California Democratic Party has one official position and that is Yes on 87.”

Last week I received a slate mailer with a postmark in Riverside.  It had a big picture of DiFi on the cover, and I was a bit suspicious. I’m thinking to myself, hmm, this is suspicious. Riverside, DiFi…hmmm.

Well, anyway, my suscpicions were confirmed when I opened the slate mailer to read a No on 87 endorsement.  I think to myself, hmmm, I don’t think DiFi would endorse No on 87, so I look it up.  Turns out, DiFi supports Prop 87.  Now, unfortunately, I failed to scan this slate mailer in before it got swept into our recycle bin.  But, before I tossed it, I did notice a few things.

DiFi did not have an asterick by her name to indicate that she paid to be on the mailer. Prop 87 did. So did Prop 86, Prop 89, etc.  So it turns out that all these “No” Campaigns had paid to be on this mailer, probably because DiFi was on it. In effect, the mailer was using DiFi’s image to slyly suggest that she did not support Prop 87, when in fact she does.

This my friends, is deceptive.  Check out silence’s diary about the No on Prop 87 campaign’s use of these mailers.  Some of the mailers they are appearing in: “Democratic Voters Choice”, “Continuing The Republican Revolution”, “Committee To Protect The Political Rights Of Minorities Candidate Pac”, “Republican Voters Checklist”.  You see, they spent lots, and lots of money to .  You can check out the No on 87 campaign spending here.  Oh, by the way, notice the $750,000 to the California Republican Party.  I guess they had too much money after all the Chevron cash dump.  So, might as well give it to the GOP, huh?  I guess the No on 87 campaign is just another fundraising arm of Team Arnold.

“Democratic Voters Choice” my butt.  These slate mailers are misleading and deceptive.  The deceptive practices of some, but certainly not all, of these mailers must be reined in.
