CYD endorses: Burton, Rooker, Bauman and Low, and Bradley

Note: I support Eric Bauman’s candidacy

I attended the California Young Democrats Executive Board meeting at UCSB yesterday to participate in and report on their endorsement process for state party offices, and catch up with my YD friends from other areas of the state.  And we got to hear a speech on the federal budget and energy policy from Lois Capps,

Most of the endorsements were no surprise, especially as, in my experience, the CYD Executive Board tends to tack somewhat closely to the party infrastructure–so, to that end, the endorsements of Burton and Bradley were no surprise.  Alex Rooker was the only candidate for female vice-chair that showed at up at the Executive Board meeting, so it was no surprise that she got the endorsement over Alicia Wong.

Eric Bauman’s endorsement, however, may be considered a little bit of a surprise.  Eric Bauman actually does have an opponent, a 25-year-old named Evan Low who currently serves on the City Council of a city in Silicon Valley.  Although Evan is by far the underdog, he actually could have been considered favored to get the CYD endorsement, since he is very active within CYD and well-known among the membership in Northern California.

There were passionate speeches on both sides, but Eric barely ended up winning the endorsement vote.  After Eric received the initial endorsement, there was a motion made to do a co-endorsement so CYD could avoid the risk of losing face by not supporting its own, which passed rather easily.

CYD isn’t the first interest group or minority to issue a dual endorsement in the male Vice-Chair race, as Judy Chu, Betty Yee and Mike Eng have all done something similar.  What will be interesting to see is how each candidate chooses to market the endorsement, because while each candidate has indeed received a CYD endorsement, the actual process was a little more complicated.

California Young Democrats ask: What happened to the Master Plan?

Young Democrats mobilize across the State to demand Governor Schwarzenegger halt education cuts

Hundreds of California Young Democrats are up in arms today and will be flooding Governor Schwarzenegger’s phone lines today and on Friday to protest his recent proposals to slash remaining education funding.

“Right when our state needs to make smart decisions to lift us out of this budget crisis, the Governor’s decided that higher education-one of our state’s most lucrative long-term investments-ought to be sacrificed,” said Rocky Fernandez, President of the California Young Democrats. “Anybody who knows anything about our state could tell you that every dollar invested in education leads to three dollars in economic output. Governor Schwarzenegger is throwing away the tractor in favor of the shovel.”

Governor Schwarzenegger’s recent proposals to cut $87.5 million out of higher education coupled with a shortening of the academic year show a total disregard for the promise of California’s Master Plan for Higher Education. Instead of investing in California’s youth, students will start their semesters with nothing but enrollment and budget cuts.

“Students will not roll over and let the California Dream of higher education fade away, ” said Charlie Carnow, Political Director of the California College Democrats. “We call on the Governor to join us in fighting for our state’s future”

OC Young Democrats Leading the Way

What else was I about to say regarding the convention last weekend? Oh yes, I remember now!

Have I told you yet that Orange County Young Democrats rocked the hall at the convention last weekend? The new California Young Democrats President happens to be our very own Tim Steed. Other local young activists quickly assumed leadership roles. Basically, our young blue party is looking much more orange these days… And boy am I loving it!

Here’s what Martin Wisckol has to say in Total Buzz:

Among the many many things that happened last weekend in San Diego that I haven’t yet mentioned here is OC’s strong showing at the board elections of the California Young Democrats. Mission Viejo’s Tim Steed was elected president of the group, the first time an OC resident has held that post. Two others from Orange County were also elected to the executive board: Lindsay Hopkins was elected vice president of finance and Chris Roa was elected region director.

“The California Young Democrats have been controlled by Los Angeles and the Bay Area forever,” said Gila Jones, Total Buzz reader on hand for the convention last weekend. “For us to wrest control is tremendous.”

So why is this so tremendous? Let me tell you why after the flip…

So why is this news so tremendous? Perhaps because these young Democrats from OC know how to get the job done. They know how to go out and recruit new Democrats on the college campuses. They know how to get young voters out to the polls. Basically, they know how to deliver Democratic victories in what’s supposed to be a “red county”. They will do a great job for CYD as they expand CYD into new territories.

And oh yes, here’s some more good news:

Meanwhile, the state Democratic Party award Melahat Rafiei, the county party’s political director, the 2007 John F. Kennedy Jr. Award — an honor that goes to young activists.

There are reasons why Democracy for America is so well organized in Orange County. One of them is Melahat. She has been so great in building up DFA-OC into a regional powerhouse, and DFA just wouldn’t be DFA without her. She totally deserved that award.

And all these fantastic young Democrats from Orange County totally deserve major kudos for leading the way in progressive activism in this state. : )
