Sen. Yee calls for end to Racist Furniture

( – promoted by Brian Leubitz)

Sometimes you just can’t make this stuff up.  Over the flip you will find the tale of Chinese furniture, being sold in Canada, with a bad attitude. Take that Sen. Correa, you aren’t the only one fighting the symbolic fight.

Yee Demands Apology, Removal of Racist Furniture Labels

Guangzhou company markets color of leather sofa with racial slur

SACRAMENTO – Senator Leland Yee (D-San Francisco/San Mateo) today called on a Chinese company to immediately discontinue selling furniture labeled with a racist slur and to issue an apology.  It was recently reported in the Toronto Star that a company from Guangzhou, China is selling leather furniture with a color description as “Nigger-brown.”  While the furniture is being sold in Canada, it is not yet known if the furniture is also being sold in the United States.

“It is completely unacceptable and there is really no excuse for an international company to market their product with such hurtful and derogatory language,” said Yee, who was born Guangzhou.  “While this may be the result of a poor translation, there needs to be some quality control when it comes to such insensitive words.”

“I have called the Counsel General in San Francisco and we plan to get to the bottom of this,” said Yee.  “This company needs to immediately discontinue selling products with this description and issue an apology.”

Last summer, Yee led an effort to remove a racially charged advertisement in the Netherlands.  The ad, promoting the release of Sony’s white-cased portable video game system (PSP), depicted a white woman angrily grabbing a black woman in the face with the text “Playstation Portable. White is coming.”  One week after Yee launch his campaign against the billboard, Sony pulled the ad and issued a formal apology.

Doolittle Compares Himself to Duke LAX

(I added (and fixed!) the audio to the post. Oh, and how about voting for Charlie or just buying a ticket for the Blue House @ The Brew House event. Sorry, dday – promoted by Brian Leubitz)

You have got to be kidding me with this.  Doolittle tried to fend off some serious media heat by having a press conference today.  The ending is a real pearler.

I have been an effective representative for the region and shall continue to be one despite this situation. Finally I will just say that if there is anything we should have learned from the Duke lacrosse case, it is that the destruction of the reputations of innocent people can occur when the government, the press and the public jump to unfounded conclusions. I ask everyone to withhold judgment until the all facts are known and the truth can prevail.

You can hear him read his prepared statement on the SacBee’s site.  Har har har, new meaning to the phrase “Doolittle raiders”.  The FBI searching the house of a sitting Congressman is so hilarious.

If you listen to the whole thing he asks for questions unrelated to the FBI raid, but obviously the reporters do not stick to that.  He claims that stepping down from Approps was his idea and was not forced upon him by Boehner.

[UPDATE] -by juls Salladay has the Q and A transcript up.  Needless to say, Doolittle is not resigning (yet).

Well ladies and gentlemen, this should be an interesting phone call. As one of my staff members said, this should give new meaning to the phrase “Doolittle’s raiders.”

I’m going to open with this statement about this subject of greatest interest. And I think you can understand this is just going to have to understand that this is going to have to suffice for now since this has been checked by our attorneys. But it expresses my thoughts. And I assure you there will be more interesting things to come in the future.

I know you have questions about this week’s events, and I understand and appreciate your interest in asking them. However I have been advised by my attorney not to make any further public statements other than those that I have already released and the one I shall now make.

First I would like you to know I have no intention of resigning from Congress and I have every intention of running for reelection again. Over past last two days the support I have received from colleagues in the House and elected officials from my district has been overwhelming. I am honored to serve with such fine people whose faith in me has not wavered. Julie and I also appreciate the outpouring of love and support from our friends and supporters.

As difficult as this week has been, I do I do believe that the events that have transpired will bring more immediate closure do to this situation, which is a good thing. Our family and my constituents have been dealing with this situation for more than three years now and I think we all deserve a resolution to it soon. Julie has complied with every request that has ever been made of her. And while I do not think the search of our home was necessary, I do believe that it will demonstrate that she has been completely forthcoming and has had real clients with real work.

As I stated yesterday I felt my temporarily stepping down from the Appropriations Committee was appropriate under these circumstances. I approached Minority Leader Boehner about my decision and he agreed that it was a good idea. The notion that I was forced to make this decision is a misstatement. I have every intention of serving again as a member of the appropriations committee and hopefully I will be able to resume those duties soon.

Despite my temporary absences form the appropriations committee, I will continue to perform my duties as the representative of the Fourth District to the best of my abilities. I will continue to return to my district to meet with my constituents and fulfill my commitment I made to them to be more accessible and responsive. I will work hard to make sure important projects in my district are funded this year, and that transportation, water projects and flood control efforts that are so critical to the region are completed.

Special Election in CA-04?

charlie brown and paul hackett Our colleagues over at the GOP flash report have started an interesting conversation:

Its very possible that Congressman John Doolittle will resign because of circumstances relating to the ethical (and maybe legal) charges being brought against him.

With ethical issues being at the forefront at the national level, Doolittle’s next challenge may be from the leadership in the Republican party — asking him to step aside for “the good of the party”.  It is also possible that a federal judge and/or US attorney forces this congressional seat open in a less subtle manner.

The Republicans are talking about who will be running in a Special. Of course, the problem isn’t Doolittle but the corrupt machine he ran so it is likely the GOP fight in a Special Election would pit Doolittle’s caporegimes fighting it out to be the next don.

Charlie Brown can win in a Special or win in 2008, but only with our help. So please get creative in reaching out to your friends and families to ask them to vote for Charlie to be the first DFA All-Star and make a contribution to the Blue House at the Brew House: McNerney-Brown Blograiser.

SB 840 – single payer health care bill passes Senate Health Committee

(Great work detailing the discussion at the hearing. – promoted by dday)

Slightly dated. Took me a while to X-post from California Notes. And I have to admit, I wanted to give Frank and myself a couple exclusive days with it.

Senate Bill 840, Shiela Kuehl’s single payer health care bill passed its first committee test Wednesday afternoon on a 6-4 which sends it to the Appropriations Committee. The companion bill, SB 1014, which details the funding also passed the committee on a 6-4 vote and will be heard next week in the Revenue and Taxation Committee.

SB 840 hearingHundreds of supporters of SB 840 packed the hearing room, overflow rooms and lined the halls outside the hearing. Most were members of the California School Employees Association and were wearing “CSEA Blue” shirts. CSEA is a co-sponsor of SB 840 and a staunch supporter of single payer health care. Close to half of CSEA members work part-time and do not qualify for employer paid health benefits.

More on the flip…

Before the hearing got started supporters were already packed into the hearing room. The Senate Education Committee was meeting, and the school employees found the deliberations interesting. As the Education Committee adjourned, Senator Jack Scott, Chair of the committee acknowledged the blue shirted CSEA members. Someone in the audience shouted, “Please support single payer, Senators,” to which Senator Tom Torlekson gave a thumbs up.

SB 840 hearingSenator Sheila Kuehl entered the hearing room to hearty round of applause and also gave a thumbs up to the audience. The crowd settled down and the business at hand, debate on the California Universal Healthcare Act, was addressed.

In her opening remarks Kuehl said we cannot depend on insurance companies to do the right thing, regulate themselves and bring the cost of health care under control. She went on to say that there is plenty of money for reform if we just stop the waste. Single payer is “not a new idea,” she said, “this is Medicare for all.”

California Nurses Association President Deborah Burger was one of the first witnesses. She told the committee about several people who had been denied coverage. Over the objections of her doctor, one woman was forced to leave the hospital.

Healthcare for All California Executive Director Andrew McGuire pointed out the popular support for Carla Held testifying before the Senate Health CommitteeSB 840. He promised to get more people involved, “and we will continue until we get single payer signed by any governor.”

A long line of witnesses, approximately 50, came forward to express their support. Among them were Carla Held, a CSEA member from Oroville whose planned testimony before the Assembly Health Committee is here. Martha Penry testifying before the Senate Health CommitteeAlso testifying was Martha Penry, a member of the CSEA Board of Directors from Sacramento.

Of course, the opposition got their chance to speak too. They were visibly in awe of the number of supporters for SB 840. They couldn’t refute the stories that had been told and so resorted to complaining about the damage they perceived SB 840 would do to businesses. Dominic DiMare of the California Chamber of Commerce pleaded, “Don’t support the outright banning of an industry.”

There is nothing in SB 840 that bans any industry. The fear is that health insurance companies will cease to exist. Their role is likely to be greatly diminished, but there will still be a need for them under SB 840.

The opposition also complained about what they call a “low threshold” to qualify for coverage. Under SB 840 every resident of the state is covered. They argue that this allows anyone to come into California and claim residency to gain health care coverage.

It was interesting to compare the arguments of the supporters against those of opponents. Supporters focused on people and the problems the present system causes people. Opponents seemed more focused on the SB 840’s effect on insurance companies and businesses. People were never part of their equation.

On the companion funding bill, SB 1014, it was noted that the cost of providing health care will be reduced overall. Minimum wage workers will pay approximately $300 per year and low wage employers approximately $500 per year. This is far less than the thousands now paid and is a shifting and lowering of taxes currently paid in other ways rather than a new tax.

Witnesses from Los Angeles Unified School District noted that they presently spend $816 million, or 11% of their budget on health care. This will rise to about $1.1 billion or 14% in 2010. The savings that could be generated under SB 840 could go directly into the classroom for our children’s education.

Following the hearing on SB 840 and SB 1014 members of CSEA went to Shiela Kuehl’s fifth floor office where they presented her with over 100 letters they had gathered from other CSEA members supporting SB 840 and telling their own health care horror stories.

Another Chance for Clean Elections in California

Last Tuesday, California Assemblywoman Loni Hancock (D-Berkeley) revitalized the push for clean money in California state elections.  According to an Associated Press story that appeared in the Orange County Register, Hancock’s bill is modeled after the systems of voluntary public financing already in place in Arizona and Maine.

Basically, candidates who choose to use public funds for their campaigns must first collect a specified number of “qualifying contributions,” or $5 donations, in order to show substantial public support.  This addresses one potential fear of publicly funded elections–that “fringe” candidates will receive tax payers’ dollars to run a campaign.  Hancock’s bill didn’t get a vote on Tuesday from the Elections, Redistricting and Constitutional Amendments Committee, but if approved by lawmakers and Governor Schwarzenegger, the bill would be up to the voters in June 2008.

After the failure of Proposition 89, California needs a good public financing initiative that follows the example of the law in two states where clean elections have been successful for the last three election cycles.  Public financing is the only way to ensure that our representatives are elected on the merits of their ideas rather than their fundraising prowess and are beholden only to their constituents.

Supporters of public financing see it as the only way to break the link between special interest money and elected officials.  According to the story in the Orange County Register:

“The money continues to flow in from special interests and the favors continue to flow out…,” said Ned Wigglesworth, a lobbyist for California Common Cause, a citizens’ group that has campaigned for years for a public financing system.

“Candidates who represent the interests of regular folks still bump into a green ceiling. Unless you’re willing to take positions favored by monied interests, you are not going to raise the kind of money you need to run a viable campaign. That’s why we’re here.”

If we expect legislation that is written and enacted in the public’s interest than we must eliminate the influence of special interest money on the political process.  The same rationale for demanding a system of public financing for state elections in California applies to federal elections.  That is why it is important to support the Fair Elections Now Act, a bill recently introduced in the Senate by Dick Durbin (D-IL) and Arlen Specter (R-PA).  The California delegation, which holds important positions in both houses of Congress, will be absolutely vital to getting this legislation passed in the Senate and eventually in the House.

Back at home though, Californians who believe in a fair electoral process free from the corrupting influence of special interest money should contact their state legislators to demand a clean elections system in California.  Public financing is a reform that 75 percent of Americans want, and if you are one of them, demand it for your state.

SD 34: Lou Correa Stands Up for the People of Vietnam

(Btw, kudos to The Liberal OC for getting my attention on this matter yesterday. : ) – promoted by atdleft)

This just in from Brian Joseph of The OC Register, blogging at Total Buzz:

Orange County Sens. Lou Correa and Tom Harman ignited fireworks in Senate chambers this morning when they objected to the introduction of a delegation from the Vietnamese government.

The senators said it was inappropriate to welcome representatives of an oppressive regime that had caused so much pain for Vietnamese residents of Orange County. Ceremonial introductions like that are infrequently challenged.
“I don’t believe this is necessary,” Correa said.

So why were Vietnamese government officials allowed into our state capitol? Why would officals from an extremely oppressive regime be allowed into OUR HALLS of government? And why would anyone want to respect a regime that has absolutely no respect for its own people?

Follow me after the flip for more on what the heck happened at the Capitol yesterday…

So how the heck was this allowed to happen? Well, unfortunately another State Senator made the mistake of inviting these Vietnamese government officials to Sacramento:

The senator who brought the delegation, Leland Yee, D-San Francisco/San Mateo, defended the action by saying the delegates are here “to learn about our Democracy.”

Oh, really?! So the Vietnamese government really wanted to “learn about democracy”? Well, maybe Leland Yee should talk to my member of Congress, who recently returned from Vietnam. Apparently, the Vietnamese government is so interested in “learning about democracy” that they won’t even let their own people exercise it… Heck, they wouldn’t even let them meet with Loretta Sanchez!

So why should we give this government any type of “welcome”? And why are they so interested in “learning about democracy” here when they don’t allow their own people to practice any? Maybe if the Vietnamese government was REALLY interested in “learning about democracy”, they would start putting some democratic ideals into practice. Yes, that would be better than just coming to OUR STATE CAPITOL to demand any respect that they don’t deserve.

ALERT! VERY IMPORTANT!

If you don’t depend on compounded medications, it’s likely someone in your family does, a friend of yours does, and/or a family member of a friend of yours does. A few members of Congress want to restrict OUR access to compounded medications. These congress members want to take away YOUR right to take medicine that is suited to YOUR needs. Just as our fingerprints are unique, our reactions to medicines are unique. These people apparently think that government officials can determine whether you need an individualized medication better than you and your doctor can.

This isn’t a matter of politics, except that they’re playing politics with OUR LIVES and the lives of those we care about. Millions of Americans’ lives are at stake here

What can you do? Call these 3 senators and tell them to LAY OFF! (of course in a nicer way)* Pass this message on as well

Senator Ted Kennedy: (202) 224-4543
Senator Pat Roberts: (202)-224-4774
Senator Richard Burr: (202) 224-3154

*You will probably get one of their staff members. You can just say something along the lines of “Hi [person’s name]. I am calling about Senator [Kennedy’s, Roberts’s, or Burr’s] authoring of the Safe Drug Compounding Act. Our doctors and ourselves should be the ones determining whether we receive compounded medication, not the government. Therefore, I ask that Senator [Kennedy, Roberts, or Burr] withdraw his name as a co-author and vote against this bill if it ever comes to the floor” They may ask you for your name and e-mail address, give it to them.

If they say something like “the bill hasn’t even been introduced yet”, etc… that’s just political rhetoric. They are preparing to introduce it, and if they say that, say something along the lines of “I am aware that they are still preparing to introduce it, and my comments still stand”

This will take at most 5 minutes of your time, and the future impact you can make will save you way more than 5 minutes

See you in San Diego

(Some words from one of the guests of honor at next week’s blograiser. – promoted by dday)

Thank you all for your support.  Last year was a great victory for Congressman McNerney and a near miss for me.  I look forward to your continued support so I can join Jerry in Washington.  There is much to be done, but our numbers, energy, and ability to organize will prove that the netroots can win elections.
Please vote for me in the DFA Allstars campaign and send the link to your friends and ask them to vote for me also.
I met some of you at the Yearly Kos Convention in Las Vegas, and hope to meet a large group in San Diego.
It’s time to take our country and government back!  Charlie

NATIONAL CONSTITUTIONAL CONVENTION PUSH NOW UNDERWAY!!

For every dollar that California pays federal taxes, it only gets back 79 cents in federal spending(source:Tax Foundation)—and we won’t even get into unfunded mandates!

Given the above, an organized effort is now underway to call for a National Constitutional Convention as authorized under Article V of the Constitution. The ultimate aim of this Convention, as envisioned, will be the dismantlement of the federal government in its present configuration, and then reassemblement at the regional level. In essence, 10 (# flexible) republics will be created on American soil (state borders intact), each having the current Constitution and Bill of Rights as the basis of their new governments. Liken this to the breakup of AT&T into the baby bells some years back. This action has become necessary to diffuse the power of the largely self-serving, excessively greedy, globalist oligarchy that has hijacked our federal government, bringing this nation to the verge of economic and social ruin in the process.
