Maldonado confirmed; dates for SD-15 special election set

Secretary Bowen tweets:

Abel Maldonado sworn in today as Lt Gov, meaning SD15 needs a special election. And Governor just proclaimed it: 6/22 primary, 8/17 general.

That means: less than four months to build a campaign that can prevail in a very winnable special election with a not insignificant Democratic registration advantage.

  1. August elections suck.

We would have been way better off having it earlier, but of course Karen Bass failed. I’m adding this to the very long list of everything that turned to shit because she touched it. Most counterproductive lawmaker I’ve ever seen, if you agree with her on an issue you are quite right to panic.

  2. said that Maldonado is the son of Mexican immigrants, so has he said anything about the Arizona immigration law?

  3. those dates are absolutely ridiculous.

We probably couldn’t consolidate the primary with the statewide primary; given the HAVA rules for absentees, it’s probably too late for that.

But holding it two weeks later? It’s almost like it’s designed to discourage turnout.
