Redistricting California (Part 4): Hypothetical Unicameral Legislature

(This is an interesting thought experiment. – promoted by Brian Leubitz)

In the last part of my redistricting California series, here is a map of what a 120-district unicameral legislature, the Senate and Assembly merged, might look like. I did this map at the same time as the Assembly map.

14 thoughts on “Redistricting California (Part 4): Hypothetical Unicameral Legislature”

  1. i’d love to see a unicameral legislature, with 160 district-allocated seats (ie. double the assembly districts) and 40 PR seats, in the style of the german bundestag.

  2. Thank you, thank you for taking the time to work this…. very nice work!

    Let’s get this done!

    You rock, cali_girl!

  3. We NEED a unicameral legislature

It would make so much snese

I wonder if Jerry Brown would champion this

(he has other priorities, I Know)

But, it would be the capstone of a Brown reform agenda

There has been No reason for a two house legislature after the Supreme Court mandated ‘one man, one vote’

For some reason, I feel that a single legislative house would lessen the power of lobbyists, special interests and back room deals and would streamline government

    THANKS for the maps !!!

  4. I’d join Lake County to Mendocino and Humboldt and then connect Napa and Sonoma instead. Wouldn’t make an appreciable difference in terms of the electoral prospects, but the migration/shopping/news/radio connections are stronger that way.

  5. It shows clearly exactly how a unicameral legislature can work well for California.

Even if I’m not happy about Monterey being lumped in with those Republicans in SLO County!

  6. I don’t think there is anything magical about 120 legislators.  What would happen if we restricted district sizes to 100,000 people?  50,000?

  7. This map is great! It provides a needed visualization of how reducing legislative district size would improve representation for California voters. Given the shifts that will occur from this year’s redistricting process there may be more interest in reforming the structure of our State Legislature.

However, in this time of reduced government resources there is a countervailing push by some state legislatures to reduce their size: http://www.sacbee.com/2011/03/

If California is an example of how this may play out, smaller legislative bodies may cause more challenges to governing in the long term.
