Republicans refuse attempt to moderate their platform
by Brian Leubitz
In a move that will shock few watchers of the California Republican party, conservatives blocked an effort by the Corporatists of the Republican party (including Charles T. Munger) to modernize their platform. You know, try to hide the crazy stuff that the CRP’s grassroots fervently believes, but the state has rejected over, and over (and over) again. But, they aren’t going quietly.
The proposed language, which downplayed traditional GOP positions on gun rights, abortion and same-sex marriage, had come under fire from conservatives. Supporters had argued that the changes emphasized jobs and the economy and presented the party’s issue stances in a way that would appeal to more voters. … The committee instead approved an updated version of the current state GOP platform, which includes more detailed language sought by conservatives.
“The platform committee reversed the horrendous decisions of the drafting committee and restored core principles of the party platform,” said Mike Spence, a leading critic of the more moderate plan. “It’s proof that people that care about issues can beat money.”(SacBee)
Instead of a platform that pushed on the issues where Democrats are struggling nationally, mostly the economy, the Republicans in California stick with their right-wing social conservative agenda. Which, oh by the way, now wedges the state in favor of Democrats.
So, for now anyway, it seems the Republicans are content to try to play nice but then act stupid. If they do lose their superminority, perhaps they can look back at their convention.
I looked at the CAGOP platform and then the Texas GOP platform and they seemed almost world’s apart (in conservative terms). I’d be curious to see how differnt they are now – if they are at all.
I actually blame the Southern drift (as in Confederacy not SoCal). Just as they were in the democrats back in the day they behave the same in the GOP. Refusing to accept a tent of any type. They hang out in the tent but gripe about the others in the part in the whole time. Nixon’s despicable Southern Strategy may have bought the GOP votes and led to quite a few presidential victories but now the GOP is really starting to pay a big price for these voters.
And maybe Munger and the other Corporatists will see how strange of a bedfellow these guys are. THey care about Social politics first second and last. There is no room for economic conservatives or national security conservatives – they are mor than willing to toss those principles side for Christian Conservative goals (see Exhibit W as in Bush).
Maybe the jungle primary and redistricting onc they are up and running will shake the GOP into reality. Or something else will take its place.
Basically Mike Spence and Jon Fleischman are surrendering the state to the Democratic Party, even though I loathe the party’s advocacy to vote against anything LGBT friendly policy including voting against AB 9 which only 1 Republican voted Yes for.
Maybe this should be celebrated Brian, Republicans are basically saying No Compromise even if it means that the California Republican Party will be just as irrelevant as Rhode Island Republicans. But this might lead to the Democratic Party becoming Mexico’s PRI where different wings of the party will fight against each other from the progressives, the centrists and the refugees who left the Republican Party because the party leaders injected themselves with too much delusions of grandeur.
Republicans have FAILED with the same platform for the last twenty years and they should of recognized that Californians are not buying what the party leaders are selling.
Maybe when more Republicans born after 1980 are elected maybe we’ll have less noxious Republicans elected.
