Governor makes quip, Democratic Legislators get nervous
by Brian Leubitz
Well, we’ve completed a full legislative session with a Democratic governor, so folks had great hope that we could finally get some legislation that had gone to die on Governor Schwarzenegger’s desk might stand a chance with Governor Brown.
But Jerry Brown, ever the mercurial sort, had some bad news for those legislators and groups with legislation landing on his desk: get ready to sing the “veto blues”:
“I’m going to veto a lot of bills over the next 30 days,” Brown told reporters after an event to reward schools with high physical fitness achievements.
“So I have to say to some, fasten your seat belt cause this is going to be a rough ride. They’ve given me 600 bills and there’s not 600 problems that we need those solutions for,” he said. …
The governor declined to say whether he would sign or veto specific bills, but he added, “You’ll hear soon enough. I think they’ll be playing the veto blues before we’re finished.” (SF Gate)
While he was coy about specific bills he did say that his response to the state aid for the “dreamers”, students who were brought to California by their parents without documents, but graduated from California high schools, was to consider the song “California Dreaming” by the Mamas and Papas.
Get ready for a very interesting 30 days.
Sorry
I’d have to officially label Jerry Brown a bit of a ‘disappointment’
I expected much more from him
He really hasn’t been able to accomplish a lot
The Same with Obama, except Obama is a Real Disappointment
I suspect that Obama failed because he was more interested in self promotion than the nation’s problems
Why hasn’t Brown been able to accomplish more?
Where does he go from here ?
Anything big he might accomplish?
The ‘Dream Act’ is good socila policy
Who is Jerry Brown? Who is Barack Obama? They are not the people I voted for. You have the campaign version and then you have something different. I understand that it is very difficult to get anything done either at the state or national level but do they have to make things worse by not helping those in need when they can?
Yours in disappointment…
(and where better than here?):
Can we compile a list of bills that we would like to lobby the Governor NOT to veto (or TO veto, in the case of Bob Huff’s “Rectal Valium Administered by Volunteers to Epileptic Schoolchildren Act,” which might not be its official name)?
Jerry’s always been a disappointment, like in 1978 when his (and the legislature’s) inaction led to the passage of Prop. 13. I guess I had my hopes up this year because he’s old now and can’t be worrying much about his political future. This “there’s not 600 problems” crap is right up the Rethugs’ alley. Who is he trying to impress?
Anyway, I was voting against Megasaurus more than for Brown. It’s always the lesser evil, isn’t it?
