McCain Visit to Sacramento Underscores Republican Disarray in State and Nation

From today’s Beyond Chron

If Democrats could choose a city for the presumptive Republican presidential nominee to visit, Sacramento should be near the top of the list. The city’s current political situation says a lot about the state of the Republican Party – not only in California, but across the country. Once a juggernaut of party unity, disciplined messaging, and perceived ‘toughness’, Republicans now look more like a petty group of infighting children unable to make the tough decisions necessary to lead the most populous state in the Union. While the Democratic National Convention tears out of the gate, John McCain’s visit to California’s state capitol yesterday for a fundraiser represents an opportunity to underscore the striking similarities between the severe problems both the state and national Republican party face.

“Read My Lips…No New Taxes”

Back in February, McCain made the rounds on the Sunday talk shows to declare that “under no circumstances” would he raise taxes. By July, he started to backtrack, stating he would consider increasing the Social Security payroll tax. But after receiving a harshly-worded open letter from the notorious Club for Growth lambasting the idea, McCain quickly reaffirmed his anti-tax stance, telling a group of voters at a town hall meeting in Colorado, “I want to look you in the eye: I will not raise your taxes nor support a tax increase. I will not do it.”

Of course, he still remains silent on exactly how he would preserve Social Security benefits in the future without increasing revenue. McCain’s strategy of using an unrealistic and dishonest pledge to oppose tax increases as a weapon to paint Barack Obama as fiscally irresponsible, while simultaneously avoiding discussions of how to maintain current levels of public services without tax increases, presents some startling similarities to California’s Republican legislature.

With the state budget now 57 days overdue, Republicans in the Senate and Assembly remain vehemently opposed to any tax hike. Yet throughout the process, they have yet to offer any proposal to solve the state’s budget gap that would rely solely on cuts. The reason is simple – the disastrous consequences such a proposal would have on millions of Californians would be a public relations nightmare.

So, they continue to hide behind their anti-tax pledge and eschew any real negotiation on how to solve the current crisis. The election of McCain, like the reelection of the obstructionist Republican state legislators responsible for the current budget impasse, will leave citizens in the same old tired mess – declining public services without any substantive discussion about how to stop the bleeding.

Republican ‘Unity’

Over the past 20 years, Republicans became increasingly identified with a remarkable degree of party unity. The seemingly disparate coalition of blue-collar, rural and religious voters and big business proved to be a powerful one, resulting in a simple and easily maintained set of core values – tax breaks for economically powerful interests, socially conservative edicts, and above all, the aforementioned ‘no new taxes’ promise.

As the Bush Jr. administration comes to a close, however, this national Republican coalition appears to be severely cracking, and McCain represents an excellent representation of this demise. So far, he has been unable to reassure religious voters that he’ll fight for their interests. And, despite his recent promise to not increase taxes, hardcore fiscal conservatives remain suspicious of McCain, due in large part to his previous efforts to enact campaign finance reform. Should McCain be elected, the possibility of an Executive divided with his own party’s legislative caucus remains very real, no matter how far McCain bends over backwards to prove he won’t raise taxes.

These fissures can also be seen in the state Republican Party. Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, unlike his fellow party members in the legislature, has offered a budget proposal that includes a three-year hike of the state sales tax. While this represents a stopgap measure that will not lead to a structurally sound budget, it still reveals the Governor realizes that walking in lock-step with the rabid anti-tax crowd is not a viable option when it comes to successfully running a state.

Schwarzenegger, however, can’t seem to convince fellow Republicans of this fact, as they remain steadfastly opposed to his budget proposal. The Governor’s inability to maintain party discipline regarding the best approach to the budget reveals a deep chasm forming between the Executive and his supposed allies in the legislature. As the state budget morass deepens, so do the cracks in the formerly unassailable unity of the state Republican party.

Democratic Opposition

The Democratic Party stands in stark contrast to the current state and national Republican disarray.

On the national level, despite media narratives of disgruntled Hillary supporters and undecided blue-collar voters, Democrats stand to display an impressive degree of unity not seen for some time. Speeches by both Bill and Hillary Clinton will cement broad inter-party support for Obama’s candidacy. The unprecedented number of youths involved in the convention will highlight renewed vigor among an important element of the party’s base. And the convention’s location in Colorado signifies growing support amongst a group of Western states formerly considered reliably red.

In California, Speaker Karen Bass passed the first test of her tenure with remarkable aplomb. The Democratic Assembly remains consistently on message concerning the budget, arguing that the Governor’s proposal does not represent a sound solution, that the Republican legislature has no solution, and that Democrats will not give up core values simply to pass a budget. When Assemblywoman Nicole Parra of Hanford strayed from her caucus and refused to vote on the Democratic budget proposal, Bass took the necessary steps to discipline her and ensure her party remains united in its efforts.

McCain declined to hold a public event in Sacramento yesterday, opting instead for a private fundraising affair with donors. But his reticence to take the spotlight here should not distract the public from the obvious and growing connection between a weakening Republican Party here in California and nationwide.

Prime Time Convention Speech Uses McCain’s Keys!

crossposted at DailyKos.  I have made edits to add in links

I can’t divulge how I got my hands on this, but what follows is a portion of one of the prime time convention speeches that picks up on joeyess’ fantastic idea of the jingling McCain keys.

I think you’ll be thrilled how *unbelievably* quickly this was picked up full force by the party and how much they’re running with it.  Joe Biden’s McCain house jab on Saturday is just the beginning.

Speech below the fold (supporting links have been edited in by me):

Before I finish, I want to send out a message of compassion to Republican John McCain.  Please hear me out.  I know most of you out there in the convention hall and watching at home have concerns about balancing your family budget, dealing with unanticipated medical bills you have no coverage for, and keeping current on your mortgage payment or rent, and you blame John McCain for not lifting a finger to do anything about it and suggesting this bad news is just all in our heads.

But rather than blaming him, I think we should rather show him our compassion for his hardships.  We ought to put ourselves in his expensive shoes and see what it’s like before we criticize him.

To do this, I’d like everyone to pull out their keys right now and just hold them up.  You probably have around 6 or 7 keys on there, one for your house or apartment, one for your car, your office, your bike lock, and so forth.  But for a moment, I’d like you to imagine that every key on there is to a separate house that you own.  I know that will take a really good imagination to do, but I’d like you to try anyways; we need to do this to understand the world John McCain lives in.

Everybody give your keys a good shake so we can hear all those house keys. [PAUSE FOR JINGLES]

That’s a lot to keep track of.  You know, people criticized John McCain for not paying property taxes on one of his houses for four years and only doing so when a media outlet asked him about it – but he wasn’t trying to cheat on his his taxes – he just forgot about that house.  Like him, I’m sure you would have trouble keeping track of all those houses too.  We need to sympathize with his situation.  Let’s give those keys another jingle in sypathy for John McCain. [PAUSE FOR JINGLES]

Also, consider John McCain’s burden in taking care of his multiple houses.  Unlike you, John McCain has full-time servants who take care of his houses, and that is monumentally expensive.  In 2007, he paid $273,000 for house servants to look after his 7 houses – that’s a lot of money!  Once again, let’s jingle in sympathy for the hardships of John McCain. [PAUSE]

Finally, Americans have attacked John McCain for being out of touch on economic issues – they mention the time he told American workers that none of them would ever consider a wage of only $50/hour to work the fields picking produce – they say no sane person would ever suggest that Americans would decide to pass up $100,000 a year jobs.

His critics also bring up that he claims the fundamentals of the American economy are strong despite all the layoffs and home foreclosures.  But, again, we must consider John McCain’s situation.

If your concerns were figuring out how many houses you own, or what fancy car you drive – don’t you think you would have a hard time relating to the lives of everyday Americans too?

One last time – let’s jingle those keys in sympathy for John McCain’s situation. [PAUSE]

I don’t know which of one of his houses he’s at right now, but whereever he is, I trust he appreciates the compassion we’re feeling for him tonight.

Thank you.

Schwarzenegger Helps Launch EcoDriving Campaign, Embarrasses McCain

It wasn’t too long ago that the McCain campaign tried desperately to mock the Obama suggestion that people would be well served to keep their tires inflated properly in order to get better gas mileage. They went so far as to send out a fundraising email offering a “free” tire gauge in exchange for a donation to the campaign. They asked “[w]ill simply inflating your tires reduce the financial burden of high gas prices on your wallet?”

Turns out, the answer from every corner is yes. To the point that McCain had to back off it entirely and concede that it’s probably a good idea to properly maintain one’s car.

But as McCain and other Republican leaders continue to push the ridiculous on its face notion that only increased offshore drilling can address the current energy challenges in this country, Automobile Manufacturers and our own Governor Schwarzenegger are lining up to push car maintenance and better driving habits as a simple way to ease the hit at the pump. He was even good enough to put a video together to promote the new EcoDriving campaign. Echoing Obama’s statements on the issue, Schwarzenegger says in part, “You can reduce your fuel costs by more than 15%. And I am talking about simple things, like proper tire pressure, avoiding rapid starts and stops, and keeping your engine tuned.”

This is admittedly a mixed bag. Better driving habits and car maintenance does have a significant impact on gas mileage, and the more attention this gets, the more likely it is that consumers will receive the message. But it’s also incumbent upon auto makers and others to not use this as a cop out on their responsibility to keep working towards more eco-friendly cars. Informing consumers is fantastic, passing the buck to consumers in not. Either way, especially in a car-centric state like California this is a nice step.

(over)

It also serves as yet another reminder that consistently, nobody agrees with John McCain. He tries to belittle the advantages of better driving habits and gets smacked down by the people who know- AAA and car makers. He tries to run on his foreign policy brilliance and even tried to claim that Obama “has now adopted John McCain’s position” on Iraq. Which was almost immediately met by Iraqi Prime Minister al-Maliki saying McCain’s Iraq plan “would cause problems” as he endorsed Obama’s plan for withdrawal over 16 months. Which left McCain with the embarrassingly sad response: 16 months is now “a pretty good timetable.”

Every time McCain tries to lead on an issue, he’s promptly smacked down by the tag team of Obama and reality. If McCain hadn’t made such an absurd deal out of proper tire inflation, nobody would have said anything about it and we likely wouldn’t have a national push from auto makers advocating better driving habits led by one of McCain’s most valuable allies. But here we are, and McCain is left, once again, looking out of touch and unprepared to deal with the world as it is.

Dan Lungren Takes A Big Bite Out Of Social Security

(Moved video up top as it is pretty gosh darn funny. – promoted by Brian Leubitz)

Yesterday, we told you about California Democrats who were holding events to celebrate the 73rd birthday of Social Security.  Their intent was to both pay tribute to the program that has been a lifeline to millions of seniors for over seven decades AND to condemn John McCain and Republican members of Congress who are eager to privatize the system and let the corporate greed-mongers of Wall Street make a bundle.

For instance, Jeff Morris, the Congressional Democratic candidate who is going head-to-head with Wally Herger in CA-02, held his campaign kickoff at the Social Security office in Redding.

Julie Bornstein, the Democrat running to unseat Mary Bono Mack in CA-45 also held an event, to open her new campaign office in Palm Springs, with a special emphasis on celebrating 73 years of Social Security.

But Beverly and Leonard’s celebration in CA-03 took the cake, so to speak…

You may have seen the video of Beverly and Leonard in yesterday’s diary as they talked about the important role Social Security has played in their lives and discussed their plans to express their gratitude to the program by delivering a birthday cake to Dan Lungren.

Well, we think Beverly and Leonard did a really sweet job of making their point.  Yesterday morning, they walked into Dan Lungren’s office with their Social Security cake, cut it up, and served large portions to Lungren’s entire staff, making sure to drive home the message that because the cake was so large, there was plenty to go around — everybody could have a piece.

Wow.  Dan Lungren couldn’t have been more on target with HIS messaging.  Yes, there’s plenty of Social Security cake to go around.  It’s just that greedy Republican politicians want to get their hands on it and take the whole cake… leaving average Americans with the empty plate.

From the other events:

In Redding, two Jeff Morris supporters who, at 73, are both the same age as Social Security, pose with Jeff’s Social Security cake.

And Julie Bornstein?  Well, she’s going work to protect Social Security and make sure there’s a piece of it available for every American — not just a few wealthy investors.

Tomorrow In the OC: Obama, McCain, Rick Warren

Southern California actually becomes the center of the Presidential universe tomorrow afternoon, as Rick Warren’s Saddleback Church hosts John McCain and Barack Obama at a forum.  The candidates will not answer questions at the same time (though both will briefly appear on stage together), but they will have an hour a piece to share their views.

It’s likely that both fans and critics will be watching closely when Warren plays host to the two presidential contenders at his church complex in Lake Forest, home to 22,000 weekend worshipers.

The presumptive Democratic and Republican nominees won’t debate during the Civil Forum on the Presidency. But they will make a brief joint appearance, their first of the campaign, and Warren will interview each separately about the Constitution, poverty, AIDS, human rights and other subjects.

“America has a choice. It’s not between a stud and a dud this year,” Warren said. “Both of these men care about America. My job is to let them share their views.”

Warren may represent the softer face of evangelicals, but he still holds beliefs that hew strongly to the family values conservatism you would expect.  In fact, he says that he would have trouble voting for an adulterer.  I wonder which of the two Presidential candidates he’s obliquely referring to?

WARREN: John Edwards and others like him (emphasis added) have lost the trust of America because they lied, and fundamentally beneath every affair it’s dishonesty, its deceit, its deception. They’re lying to God. They’re lying to themselves. They’re lying to their wives and they’re lying to the public. How do you trust someone who’s constantly lying? You can’t. That’s why it is a myth to say their personal life doesn’t matter. It does matter — all of leadership is built on credibility.

TAPPER: Would you have compunctions about voting for someone who had cheated on his wife?

WARREN: Absolutely I would. Absolutely I would. Because if you can’t keep your faith to your most sacred vow – “’til death do us part” — how in the world can I trust you to lead my family? My government? My nation?…Absolutely I would. I think people first need to ask forgiveness and then earn trust back over time. Can trust be re-earned? Absolutely but it takes time.

I got my credential request in a little too late, but I am going to head down to survey the scene and give some kind of report.

Beverly And Leonard Are Planning A Party!

Today is the birthday of Social Security, and Democrats around the country will be celebrating the program that has provided stability and dignity to seniors for the last 73 years. During the last few years, George W. Bush, John McCain and the Republicans in Congress have done their best to try to dismantle the protections that Social Security has built over the years.

“The American people said ‘no’ to George W. Bush and John McCain when they tried to privatize Social Security, and they’ll say the same loud and clear to John McCain this November for promising more of the same,” said DNC Chairman Howard Dean. “The same people who brought you Enron can’t be trusted to gamble away the Social Security trust fund on the ups and downs of the stock market. John McCain is wrong on the privatization of Social Security, and he’s the wrong choice for America’s future.”

PhotobucketThroughout the US, Democrats will be visiting Republican legislators and taking them copies of this birthday card. Here in California we have several special events taking place.

Up in CA-02, Democratic Candidate Jeff Morris, who is challenging the do-nothing Republican incumbent, Wally Herger, will be holding his Campaign Kick-Off at the Social Security Office in Redding. If you’re in the area, stop by and meet him and his wife, Judy, and their many dedicated supporters.

Where: Social Security Office, 2195 Larkspur Office, Redding, CA 96002

When: Thursday August 14th at 9:45 am

Down in CA-45, Julie Bornstein, the Democratic candidate who is challenging Republican Mary Bono Mack, will be celebrating both the Social Security Birthday and the opening of her campaign office in Palm Springs.  There’s a rumor that cake may be involved…

Where: 1027 South Palm Canyon Drive, Palm Springs, CA

When: Thursday August 14th from 4:30 to 6:30 pm

Or, if you’re in the Sacramento area you can join Beverly and Leonard and some of their friends. Beverly and Leonard live in CA-03, and they’re going to be honoring the birthday of Social Security by taking some birthday cake to their Republican Congressman, Dan Lungren. You see, Beverly and Leonard aren’t exactly rich, and they depend on their monthly Social Security payments to make ends meet. That’s why they’re not too keen on those risky privatization schemes that Republicans like John McCain and Dan Lungren have peddled. Here…they’ll tell you all about it.

So come out and join Beverly and Leonard (or Jeff Morris or Julie Bornstein) today as they stand up in support of our Democratic values and the programs like Social Security that have served so many millions of Americans so well.

Where: Dan Lungren’s District Office, 2339 Gold Meadow Way #220, Gold River, CA 95670

When: Thursday August 14th at 11:00 am

And tune in tomorrow to find out what happened…

“Exxon John” All Across California

Democrats across the state and nation today are calling on Exxon John McCain to support lowering gas prices by requiring Big Oil to use some of their windfall profits to reduce gas prices.  Here in the Bay Area, DNC Vice-Chair Rep. Mike Honda just did an event at a Shell station in Campbell.

And down in SoCal, CA-44 nominee Bill Hedrick held a similar event calling on Ken Calvert to actually, you know, do something.

UPDATE: Nice little Exxon John video to the right, a little play off the “Big John” Cornyn video that made its way all around the webz a month or so.

Press release on the flip.

CONGRESSIONAL CANDIDATE BILL HEDRICK AND SOUTH ORANGE COUNTY RESIDENTS TO URGE “EXXON JOHN” MCCAIN AND MCCAIN COHORT KEN CALVERT TO SUPPORT IMMEDIATE RELIEF FROM HIGH GAS PRICES BY REQUIRING BIG OIL TO USE PORTION OF WINDFALL PROFITS TO EASE BURDEN ON CALIFORNIANS

San Juan Capistrano, CA – Democratic Congressional Candidate Bill Hedrick will join with a group of local residents fed up with high gas prices and sky-rocketing oil profits to call on “Exxon John” McCain and his cohort Ken Calvert to stop fundraising long enough to back immediate relief from high gas prices by requiring Big Oil to use a portion of their windfall profits to ease the burden on Californians struggling to fill up their tanks.

As Bill Hedrick joins hard working Californians to form a comprehensive energy plan that will help them deal with high gas prices in the short term and set in place long-term investments to resolve our nation’s energy crisis, “Exxon John” and his buddy Ken Calvert want to reward their Big Oil buddies with nearly $4 billion in tax breaks. That includes more than $1 billion in tax breaks for Exxon, which just reported the highest profits in the history of mankind.

Participants will carry signs that say “Exxon-McCain ’08” and offer to present “Exxon John” with a massive check made out to him from Big Oil, in the sum of $2 million dollars he’s reaped from the oil industry.  The check will be endorsed over to Calvert for his continuation of votes for Big Oil.

Similar events are taking place across the country on Tuesday, the National Exxon-McCain Day of Action. For more information on Exxon-McCain ’08, visit our campaign website at www.exxonmccain08.com

The Times They Are A-Changing: Obama Will Announce VP Via Text

Just got this message on my mobile phone:

Barack will announce his VP candidate choice through txt msg between now & the Conv. Tell everyone to text VP to 62262 to be the first to know! Please forward.

As for McCain’s timing? I’m going to guess on the back of Loch Nessie as she searches for some of her friends in the form of asphalt-grade oil under the continental shelf, say near Santa Barbara? It will all be quite fun really.

More on those Random Apolitical Dudes for McCain

Dave mentioned this story on Wednesday about seemingly unlikely donors to the cause of one John McCain. Today, McCain announced that he would be returning $50,000 of that money:

After a report by The Post’s Matthew Mosk raised questions about one of Sen. John McCain’s campaign fundraisers, the GOP presidential candidate decided to return about $50,000 brought in by a Florida oil executive. The McCain campaign acknowledged that some of the funds were collected by a foreign national and came from donors who may not support the candidate.

The Post reported Wednesday that Harry Sargeant III submitted a bundle of checks for $2,300 and $4,600 on a single day in March, all of them from donors in Southern California who had never given before this year’s campaign and did not appear to be likely candidates to contribute as much as $18,400 per household. (WashPo 8/8/08)

It’s not clear how he chose that number of $50,000 or whether he plans on doing anything with the rest of the questionable half million bucks that he raised mostly from SoCal.  MoveOn has a petition asking for a Justice Dept. investigation.

Big Oil for McCain…shocking, huh?

Random Apolitical Dudes from the Inland Empire For McCain!

This is a budding scandal.  The front page of the Washington Post today profiles Harry Sargeant III, a bundler for John McCain who has a knack of getting big-dollar donations out of working-class people in the Inland Empire who’ve never made a political contribution in their lives.

The bundle of $2,300 and $4,600 checks that poured into Sen. John McCain’s presidential campaign on March 12 came from an unlikely group of California donors: a mechanic from D&D Auto Repair in Whittier, the manager of Rite Aid Pharmacy No. 5727, the 30-something owners of the Twilight Hookah Lounge in Fullerton.

But the man who gathered checks from them is no stranger to McCain — he shuttled the Republican on his private plane and held a fundraising event for the candidate at his house in Delray Beach, Fla […]

Some of the most prolific givers in Sargeant’s network live in modest homes in Southern California’s Inland Empire. Most had never given a political contribution before being contacted by Sargeant or his associates. Most said they have never voiced much interest in politics. And in several instances, they had never registered to vote. And yet, records show, some families have ponied up as much as $18,400 for various candidates between December and March.

Both Sargeant and the donors were vague when asked to explain how Sargeant persuaded them to give away so much money.

This is extremely odd.  Non-donors don’t just pop up and max out, especially when they don’t fit the profile of having $2,300 to spare.  There’s at least the possibility here of straw donations, where these names are either picked out of the phone book and used as shells so big-money folks can deliver more than campaign finance limits to the candidate, or the contributors are willing participants who give and then get the money back (with a little extra for their trouble) from the same big-money boys.

Adding to the intrigue is that these donors declined to talk about the donations (at first denying they had made them) or who asked them to do so.  Half these people aren’t registered to vote.  And all of them appear to be Arab-American, a community with which Sargeant has unique contacts:

Sargeant’s business relationships, and the work they perform together, occur away from the public eye. His firm, International Oil Trading Co. (IOTC), holds several lucrative contracts with the Defense Department to carry fuel to the U.S. military in Iraq.

“It is very difficult and is a very logistically intensive business that we have been able to specialize in,” Sargeant said. “We do difficult logistical things that don’t necessarily suit a major oil company. It’s a niche we’ve been able to occupy.”

The work has not been without controversy. Last month, Rep. Henry A. Waxman (D-Calif.) initiated a review of IOTC’s contract to determine whether it was overcharging the military for jet fuel, and to learn how the company, which did not submit the lowest bid, landed the contract to supply the fuel. The Pentagon has said that IOTC won the contract because it was the only company with a “letter of authorization” from the Jordanian government to move the fuel across its territory to Iraq.

Greg Sargent and Eric Kleefeld have more on this element of the story – Sargeant (no relation to the TPM writer) is apparently being sued by the brother-in-law of the King of Jordan.

This is a very shady tale and I’m guessing we haven’t heard the end of it.  John McCain’s absentee leadership has led to serious violations of campaign finance law already – and this could be the worst yet.
