Water: A Conversation with Sen. Lois Wolk and Asm. John Laird

(Check us out at 3:30! – promoted by Brian Leubitz)

UPDATE: We just wrapped up the show, which I think went very well.  The archive is available in the player to the right, and will be available on itunes shortly.

There is much news going around the Capitol around water issues. One of the most noticeable issues is the growing opposition from Delta legislators that was highlighted in Capitol Weekly:

Assemblyman Roger Niello, R-Sacramento, and Sen. Lois Wolk, D-Linden, don’t agree on much. But both are against the water plan being negotiated between the Legislature and the governor – and both think they have the votes to kill it.

Their opposition stems from one thing they do have in common. Each represents a district within the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta, the water-rich region at the center of the water policy and bond package.

“Absolutely there is bipartisan opposition,” Niello said. “Lois’ concerns are not the same as mine, but she is nonetheless every bit as opposed as I am.”

[Wolk] added: “Southern California has to do away with its dependence on the Delta.”

Meanwhile, the hard work of actually making it happen is getting some attention from the California Teachers Association and the High Broderist George Skelton.  And the issue of funding is still a mysterious one.  Nobody has really laid out a plan, in public, to pay for all of this new construction. Construction that doesn’t even bring us any additional water.

So, tomorrow we’ll talk with Senator Lois Wolk, the Legislature’s leading water expert and former Assemblyman John Laird, in my opinion, the go-to guy for questions of funding and the budget.  Please join me on the Calitics podcast, live at 3:30. You can also catch the podcast at the same address after the fact.

Calitics Podcast: SF DA Kamala Harris, Live at 3

Way back in August, I did an interview with Kamala Harris and a few other bloggers.  We’re going to air that interview now as we approach the Nov election. We discussed a wide range of topics from the presidential election to “SmartOnCrime”. It’s good stuff.

Dave and I will also be chatting about a range of issues for the upcoming election.  Listen at the Calitics Show homepage. You can also catch the podcast there, or at iTunes

Calitics Show: Julie Bornstein

(bumped – this was a really good discussion.  I’m more excited now about the Bornstein candidacy.  Be sure to check out the podcast. – promoted by David Dayen)

Another exciting Calitics Show this week. We’ll be talking live to Julie Bornstein, Democratic nominee for CA-45. CA-45 is a Congressional District that we have a real shot at. Despite being only the 194th Most Republican District at R+3, it is currently listed by Cook as a solid Republican Seat.  I’ll note that Cook also rated Pombo as a solid Republican seat around this time two years ago. Bornstein, a former Assembly member, is a solid candidate with the possibility to shock a few people come November.

Hannah-Beth Jackson on the Calitics Show

(Starting in just one minute… – promoted by Lucas O’Connor)

We weren’t able to arrange everything for our Monday 3:30 time slot, but today, in addition to a wrap-up of the June 3 election, we’ll have an interview with Hannah-Beth Jackson, Democratic Nominee for the 19th State Senate District. We recorded the interview this morning, and let’s just say she’ll make a great Senator. The show will air today (6/10) at 3:30. You can listen live at the homepage, check it out later, or download it at iTunes.

In other news from this race, the Ventura County Star did a report on Sunday about who is funding the Ventura County GOP. You’ll find some unsurprising answers:

The nation’s largest tobacco company has donated $50,000 to the Ventura County Republican Central Committee as the local party gears up to help GOP candidate Tony Strickland in what is expected to be a multimillion-dollar campaign this fall in the 19th Senate District.

*       *          *

The contribution accounts for 88 percent of the $56,800 the county party had raised this year through the most recent reporting period. … The $50,000 contribution came from the Altria Group, parent company of Philip Morris USA, which makes half the cigarettes sold in the United States. Osborn said he has no concerns about accepting such a large sum from the tobacco industry.

No concerns? Really? You can find Hannah-Beth on the Calitics ActBlue page.
