Denham Doesn’t Like Being Picked On

The recall war is continuing to deliver drama, with Senator Denham dropping a radio ad a few days ago which implicitly suggests that he shouldn’t even be eligible for recall.  As Capitol Alert recounts, “The ad…says: ‘When a public official is guilty of malfeasance or criminal conduct in office, the California Constitution provides for the right to recall.'”

But as Capitol alert and Don Perata’s spokesman both note, that’s just one reason for someone to be recalled.  CapAlert was good enough to track down the applicable portion of the law, which says: “Recall of a state officer is initiated by delivering to the Secretary of State a petition alleging reason for recall. Sufficiency of reason is not reviewable.”

I don’t recall any conduct by Gray Davis that was either criminal or contrary to law, but I guess that could be in the eye of the beholder. You may recall (ha!) that the petitions circulated back in 2003 said in part:

[Governor Davis’s actions were a] “gross mismanagement of California Finances by overspending taxpayers’ money, threatening public safety by cutting funds to local governments, failing to account for the exorbitant cost of the energy, and failing in general to deal with the state’s major problems until they get to the crisis stage.”

Now, Senator Denham may not personally or at least exclusively be responsible for “gross mismanagement” of anything, but last I checked, our current budget crisis (which is based on the budget that Denham’s obstinacy helped create) is cutting funds to local governments (which threatens local education if not safety), has failed to account for the exorbitant cost of energy, and rather obviously failed in general to deal with the state’s major problems before they got to the crisis stage.  So basically, the one example of a major and modern recall election fits exactly with the premise driving the Denham recall attempt.  But rather than actually defend himself, Denham has decided to to whine about being picked on.

It might be that there’s a reasonable case for Denham to make on this, but he sure isn’t making it with this “why is everybody always picking on me?” silliness.

Joe Alioto Veronese Endorses and San Francisco Unites for Mark Leno

( – promoted by Lucas O’Connor)

Joe Alioto Veronse Ensdorses Mark LenoAt a press conference this morning, San Francisco Police Commissioner and former Democratic candidate Joe Alioto Veronese threw his support to Mark Leno for State Senate.

Veronese was joined by Mayor Gavin Newsom, Assessor Recorder Phil Ting, School Board President Mark Sanchez, Supervisors Bevan Dufty and Sean Elsbernd, former Treasurer Susan Leal, and Firefighters Union President John Hanley.

Leno also announced the weekend endorsements of the California Nurses Association and the California Teachers Association. Leno spoke on how this is clearly a two person race between Leno and former Assemblyman Joe Nation. The campaign’s momentum since the CDP convention highlights how the progressive community is uniting to keep this seat from falling into the hands of a candidate who doesn’t even support single-payer health insurance and voted against Sheila Kuehl’s bill.

“As we look forward to the election of former State Senator Jackie Speier to congress tomorrow — fingers are crossed, we think she’ll do very well — I’m reminded that when Senator Speier was moving forward her landmark privacy legislation, consumer privacy legislation, that Joe Nation again not only would not support it, but was carrying legislative water for the banking and credit card industry that Jackie was trying to reform.”

Leno went on to remind people of Nation telling the papers that it was a “mistake” for Mayor Newsom to courageously advance marriage equality. As the sponsor of the first resolution in the country opposing invading Iraq, Leno also reminded voters of Nation’s opposition to a timetable for withdraw.

Tibet Protestors Scale Golden Gate Bridge

First in London and now in Paris, pro-Tibet protesters are disrupting the Olympic torch relay, and in the case of Paris, they extinguished the flame on numerous occasions and eventually canceled the presentation.

The flame reaches San Francisco for its only American stop on Wednesday.  Hundreds of police officers are expected to cover the parade, and the route has been shifted and altered in an attempt to outflank the expected protesters.  In advance of this, 3 protesters have placed signs on the top of the Golden Gate Bridge.  SFist has the story and is updating.

Update: (11:42): Nope, all three climbers are staying put. Those descending the suspension cables right now are just bridge workers. This will go on for a while.

KGO is reporting that seven people were arrested so far with regard to this protest.

Update (11:51 a.m.): More flags are being put up. The three protesters–one man, two women–still remain. Newcasters are desperate to know “how this could have happened?”

If you don’t have to go to the Golden Gate Bridge, don’t. It’s heavily congested. Obviously.

The situation is essentially that the International Olympic Committee currently has the most leverage over the Chinese government’s behavior in Tibet, and their human rights record generally.  And so these protests and potential boycotts, most recently discussed by French President Nicolas Sarkozy, make more than a symbolic statement.  Hillary Clinton is calling on George Bush to follow suit (which is unlikely, because he digs sports).  Hold Fast Blog has a lot more.

Wednesday should be very interesting.  Our SF bloggers will hopefully weigh in.

CA 37 again?

When Laura Richardson won the CA-37 race last year, it gave her a real advantage to defend her seat this year.  That makes Peter Matthews continued opposition interesting and, even more to the point, opens the question of what Brezenoff is talking about in the LB Post.

Though it seems like just yesterday that the 37th district Congressional seat was up for grabs (it was, in fact, just last summer) there’s a Congressional election going on again this year, and it will be decided not in November, but on June 3rd in the Democratic primary. The Republicans, knowing they have to marshal their resources in districts they might actually win, have fielded no candidate. Perennial libertarian gadfly Herb Peters has stayed out of the race, and my party, the Green Party, is focused on grassroots organizing and internal party matters. There are three candidates, and they are all Democrats.

Call it a snoozer; I call it an opportunity. We can elect a representative with passion, integrity, creativity, and intelligence.

Or we can vote for the status quo.

Save the Coastal Commission – Sign the petition!

( – promoted by Robert in Monterey)

This week, the California State Senate will be holding a hearing on SB 1295, a dangerous bill intended to weaken the power of the California Coastal Commission. I urge you to sign my petition below and join me in voicing opposition to this bill.

Click here to sign the petition!

For over 30 years, the California Coastal Commission has worked to safeguard 1.5 million acres of our coastline, fighting the good fight for our beloved California coast.

As the toughest defender of our coast, the Coastal Commission has faced various attempts to weaken its ability to advocate on behalf of our coastal environment. The most recent such attempt is SB 1295. This bill would eliminate the ability of Commissioners to appeal local government project approvals. I strongly oppose this bill, and any legislation that seeks to undermine the Commission's ability to provide effective oversight of projects along the coast.

On Tuesday, March 25th, at my request, the Santa Cruz City Council unanimously voted to officially oppose SB 1295 and communicate our opposition to our legislators and the Chair of Natural Resources Committee.

I urge you to join me in opposing the bill by making your voices heard prior to the State Senate hearing on April 8th, when this bill will come in front of the Senate Natural Resources Committee.

CA-12: Jackie Speier’s old-school grassroots campaign culminates in 4/8 Election

I’m quite fortunate to live in Speaker Pelosi’s district. It’s definitely cool to say that the Speaker of the House is your representative. But, on Tuesday, I’ll wish I lived a few blocks (literally) to the west so that I could vote for Jackie Speier.

Yesterday, I headed down to South San Francisco, the land of fog and strip malls, to chow down on some pancakes with Jackie Speier. When I and my blogger crew (namely: Sweet Melissa & Spots) rolled in there, it was a little slow. And, to put it mildly, we lowered the average age by a few decades. But that’s all well and good, because we were about to get served pancakes by a future Congresswoman, but instead we sat down to a plate of flapjacks served by a high schooler whom I later found out was Jackie’s daughter.

You can see the video of much of Jackie’s remarks. She spent much of the time talking about the people that have endorsed her and the 41 community meetings that she’s held between her campaign kickoff and the election tomorrow. She’s basically running this campaign as an old-school as you get. She kicked it off in January with hot dogs and cotton candy, and is making the close with pancakes and spaghetti in an attempt to meet every possible voter. The election on Tuesday will be verrrry low turnout, so ever voter counts.

Jackie’s extremely qualified for the job. In her speech she ticked off all her priorities, especially consumer protection.  Her privacy bill remains the strongest in the nation, and she will continue to fight for the rights of the consumer in Washington.  If she gets 50%+1 on Tuesday, she will be representing CA-12 on Thursday. So, if you’re in the district, please remember to vote.

Thanks!

Kevin McKeown seeks Denver votes from CD 30

As a delegate to the state Democratic convention in San Jose last week, I helped the Progressive Democrats of America team change the state party platform on the war in Iraq.  See http://www.laprogressive.com/2…

Now I need your support to become your national delegate, and carry the same progressive agenda to the national party at the August convention in Denver.  Please come to the 30th CD (Waxman’s district) Obama delegate caucus:

WHEN  This Sunday, April 13th at 2pm

WHERE  Rancho Park Rec Center, 2551 Motor Ave. in L.A., just south of Pico

(note change from previously announced UCLA location)

To vote at the caucus, you must be there by 3pm at the latest.  While there’ll be opportunity to socialize with fellow Obama Democrats and hear a number of speakers, you need not stay all afternoon to cast your vote.  As a Santa Monica City Councilmember in my third term, I know how to make progressive politics work and how to effectively advocate our progressive agenda.  Please take the time on Sunday to come cast your vote for Kevin McKeown as one of your Obama delegates.

March Electronic Filing: Pettis Raised More Campaign Funds than Democratic Opponents Combined

Seems that the electronic filing deadline for Election 2008 CA 80th Assembly District came and went without me making any comment on the results.  Well, whether you like it or not here comes my late bloomer blogging about the March 24, 2008, filing.

Greg Pettis, Mayor Pro-Tem of Cathedral City and Democratic candidate for the 80th AD lead all Democratic and Republican opponents in this filing.  Pettis raised $54,980.43 during this filing period, spent $52,371.86, and has $31,062.71 cash on hand.

Gary Jeandron, boardmember of the Palm Springs Unified School District and presumptive Republican candidate for the 80th AD raised $38,093, spent $39,754.34, and has $148,039.3 on hand campaign monies.

More below the flip…

Manuel Perez, Vice-President of the Coachella Valley Unified School District and Democratic candidate for the 80th AD raised $18,334, spent $22,788.90, and has $31,541.74 cash on hand.

Rick Gonzalez, Wells Fargo Community Development Corp. employee, raised $17,047.93, spent $16,317.41, and has $32,403.63 in available cash.

Richard Guttierrez, dentist, did not file.  Only candidates raising or spending $50,000 or more or who received a $5,000 donation are required to file electronically.  This means that Guttierrez raised less than $50,000, spent less than $50,000, and did not receive any donation in the amount of $5,000 or greater.

Overall, Pettis far-and-away outraised his Democratic and presumptive Republican opposition.  In fact, Pettis seems to have raised more money than his three Democratic challengers combined.  Pettis also outspent his three Democratic rivals combined according to the electronic filing.  Regarding cash on hand, though, each of the three Democratic campaigns have approximately the same funds in current accounts, though Perez at this rate is spending more each month than he is collecting in donations.

Even more interesting is the fact the Pettis outraised Jeandron in this reporting cycle.  In fact, Pettis raised fifty percent more campaign funds than did Jeandron.  Jeandron still has a much better campaign war chest as we head towards November.  In fact, observers have noted that Jeandron has begun to spend advertising monies on AirAmerica, a progressive talk radio station, that airs in the Coachella Valley on a local station.

At least in this reporting period, the donations in the Coachella Valley are mimicking those on the National level where Democrats are outraising and outspending the Republicans.  The difference is that on the National level, Democrats also have a huge campaign war chest.

CA : A two state solution?

Hello,

I am not a Californian, don’t live in CA. Hence I don’t usually visit calitics. And, I am also not sure if this issue has been discussed before in forums.

For some time, I have been thinking about CA as a two state solution, i.e, split CA into two states; norcal and socal. CA is too big. If it were a country, it would rank one of top 10 countries, in terms of population and economy. Managing this state by one Governor is sort of hard. This is about managing a state better.
