Election Day Open Thread

There was a bit of other news besides our low turnout.  Some of both as we wait for results:

* Debra Bowen says there will be an “army of lawyers” reviewing Prop 14 if it passes.

* The Supreme Court put a stay on the Arizona election matching funds. It’s a more robust system than Prop 15’s fair elections, but we could see some settled law on the issue with this case.  If it is overturned, a constitutional amendment might be the only route left for fair and clean elections.

* Meg Whitman already has a rally planned for Wednesday. That’s gotta sting Poizner…

* Hey, the Lakers are in the Finals, but SoCal sports revenue is down.

* In the Senate race, Fiorina and DeVore defended Israel’s recent flotilla incident.

* Skelton says today’s GOP would snub St. Ronny.

* While California’s population has grown, the population of whites has shrunk by half a million. Of course, these lines themselves are going to become less meaningful over the next 50 years,

* Poizner and Whitman get personal.  For Poizner, part of that was going anti-gay today. Nice touch, jerk.

* The Assembly passed legislation banning carrying unloaded handguns in public.

* Arnold and the gang officially applied for lots-of-strings attached funding from the “Race to the Top” education fund.

* LA City Attorney Carmen Trutanich looks set to get legislation passed to get a grand jury of his own. The Governor hasn’t commented on the issue as of yet.

* Meg Whitman got an earful at rally in Westminster.

Memorial Day Weekend Open Thread

It’s getting close to election day, so while some of us will be busy working away, hopefully it will be a restful period for others. With the DADT repeal still up for debate, it is important to remember the sacrifices that those of every orientation, ethnicity, and faith have made for the Dream of America.

Now, to the links:

* The Wall Street Journal took a scrap from the LAO to scream that the sky will fall unless AB 32 is repealed.  Except…not really. As the Environmental Defense Fund points out, they weren’t really all that honest about the report, and the long-term effect of AB 32 is positive.

* Meg Whitman wanted to stay firmly planted in the middle of the electorate. Steve Poizner did not let her. And now, the immigration issue has pushed her firmly to the right of the majority of California voters. ANd then she compounds it by forgetting that she shows a border fence in her tv ad. One of her many TV ads.

* Speaking of immigration, it appears that Mark Ridley-Thomas will be the deciding vote on the LA County boycott of Arizona for its immigration policies.

* The OC Register has a recap of the GOP Senate hopefuls positions.

* Sarah Palin charged CSU-Stanislaus nearly $100,000. That’s double what she charged a Republican Party group in Oregon. Apparently, Palin gouges students, but gives Republicans the ol’ discount.

* Costa Mesa’s grandstanding on the immigration issues might cost them on their other pet project, the OC Fairgrounds.

* Carly Failorina is defending her failing record at HP. Well, hope she has those tap dancing shoes shined up.

* A labor backed group, California Working Families for Jerry Brown for Governor 2010 committee,  says that they will go up with ads against eMeg over the summer.

* The San Luis Obispo county Board of Supervisors voted to oppose PG&E’s Prop 16 power grab, citing its monopolistic and anti-democratic goals.

* Reps. Gary Miller and David Dreier are facing primary challenges from the Tea baggers. Both challengers are underfunded, but both are showing signs of nerves.

* Shane Goldmacher looks at the Controller and Treasurer races.  Mimi Walters is running against Lockyer for Treasurer, but with Lockyer’s huge war chest, he should have no problems.  John Chiang has been praised both among the financial community and the labor community. Meanwhile, Tony Stickland has to love this closing sentence at a time of the worst oil spill in history: “Strickland said that, if elected, he would push for the oil drilling proposal.”

* The City of Dana Point and the Coastal Commission are in a big fight over access paths to the coast.

* The Republican candidates can’t attack each other enough, “poisoning” the electorate. Poor Whitman and Poizner.

* The California Democratic Party gave a couple million bucks to Jerry Brown’s campaign. In all likelihood, this was money that was raised using the party as a conduit.

* The Chronicle suggests looking to Alaska for context about how marijuana legalization might go. The state has had very strong privacy protection that has meant it was legal to cultivate and use small amounts of the drug at home for thirty-five years.

* California lags behind the nation in dental care for children.

* The SF Bay Guardian thinks the UC and CSU regents should quit the board of the California Chamber of Commerce. Makes sense.

* There’s a PPIC poll coming out that will have numbers in the primaries.  Whitman’s staff is spinning already.

* The NRA is telling its members to vote against Tom Campbell.

* The New York Times looks at Arnold’s attempted power play with the Coastal Commission. Long story short, Arnold is trying to limit their legal spending, which is the lifeblood of the body.
