CA-44: Darkness Is Coming To California.

I know this is last minute but I want to help my friend, Bill Hedrick, who has two son’s who are or have served in Iraq, is running against corrupt Republican congressman Ken Calvert CA-44th.

Warning: If you intend to click on the link to Calvert’s site you might want to start the shower.

Cheney

Are you afraid? You should be. But brace yourself – Dick Cheney is coming to do a high-dollar fundraiser for Calvert today in San Clemente. There will be a protest but I have no word of a citizen arrest.

Keith Olbermann even had a segment on tonight about the race.

Here are the details on the protest.

There are a lot of reasons why Bill is a great candidate but here’s something that is not obvious. Look at Bill Foster IL-14 who took Denny Hastert’s seat and look at the first few seconds of the video here. You will think they are the same person.

Here’s a little about Bill that will help you see how great a candidate he is. He has what it takes and is a great guy.

The son of a Teamster and a teacher, both from the South

And look at this –

Their son Adam, a soldier with the 3rd ID, is currently serving a second Iraqi deployment east of Baghdad. Son Jesse served in Baquba with the 1st ID before suffering a near-fatal “heat event,” while his wife, Evelyn, was an army convoy driver in Baghdad, also serving a second tour.

Expect to hearing more from me about Bill Hedrick.

Gary Miller needs to reimburse taxpayers $1.28m

(strong stuff from our netroots candidate, Ron Shepston.  His candidate website is here. – promoted by David Dayen)

I haven’t been around much in the past few months. In fact, I’ve been busy getting ready for our bust-out campaign. Call time and endorsement pushes are very time consuming especially when you have to still work to put food on the table. With this post I am back.

Today, I called on Rep. Gary Miller (pg2) to reimburse the taxpayers $1.28 million for an earmark that he placed in the 2005 Highway bill.

I am sick and tired of letting career politicians who care more about their personal business than the peoples’ business run our country.

For those of you that don’t know the Gary Miller story, in 2005, Rep. Miller inserted an earmark into the Highway bill.  This earmark paid for street improvements near Diamond Bar Village.  This is a local commercial and residential development.

The catch? The development is co-owned by Mr. Miller and his largest campaign contributor, ,Lewis Operating Corporation.

I don’t think our tax dollars should be used to personally enrich Gary Miller or his biggest campaign contributor. According to law, Members of the House are prohibited from, “taking any official actions for the prospect of personal gain for themselves or anyone else.”

This is not the first and only time Rep. Gary Miller has blurred the lines.  In a 2006 LA Times story, members of his Congressional staff say there was “never a clear line between what was Congressional business and what was just business.  The expectation was that you would do both.” (The Times link is dead. If you have it please let me know.)

The problem for Gary Miller is, there is a clear line between right and wrong and he’s crossed it.

Here is what we want to do.  Our goal is to raise $16,384 to help defeat Rep. Gary Miller.  That’s 128 contributors at $128 dollars per donor.  But I realize $128 is too much for many people so here’s how you can let everyone know that you want to highlight Gary Miller actions – add $1.28 to each contribution. If you want to help hold Gary Miller accountable then contribute now.

When we launched this campaign we did it because we believed it was time to hold Gary Miller accountable.  We believe that it is time for the first candidate for a federal office from the netroots to run for Congress.

We need your help right now.  Sign up and Contribute. Link to this diary and tell our friends. I promise that I will work hard each and every day and build a local grassroots campaign for Congress that has not been seen in Orange County in a long time but I need your help. I can’t do it without you.

CA-42: Hi, I’m Ron Shepston and I’m running for Congress

(Woo-hoo! A REAL netroots candidate in Orange County! What more could I possibly ask for? Oh yes, and you can also enjoy this at Daily Kos and The Liberal OC! ; ) – promoted by atdleft)

I posted this over at dKos but really wanted to put it here because it’s such an important site in California netroots.

Caution is preferable to rash braverySir John Falstaff, King Henry the Fourth, Part I

Falstaff may be beloved, but he was not who you wanted leading you into battle.  Political challengers today need to be brave, brash, maybe even a little rash.

In World War II, when the gates came down in LCVPs (Landing Craft, Vehicle, Personnel), exposing the marines and soldiers inside to uncounted barrages of fire, they didn’t sit around discussing whether it was prudent to charge ahead with the goal of defeating a formidable enemy.  No one had to order them to go to give their lives; they just did it.  They had a world to save and they gave their lives for a cause they believed in.

Today, those of us who would defend the Constitution have a new fight.  Today, as a Democrat, a veteran, and a longtime member of this community, I’m marching off to that fight.

I’m running for Congress.

My campaign manager, Major Danby says that he likes this photo of me that he took at the Huntington Beach Fourth of July Parade, where I marched with the Democratic Party of Orange County, and that it has to appear near the top of the diary so people know who’s talking to them.  Here you go.

Now let’s talk about my campaign.

I’m running because Congress has let the President stomp on the Constitution, balloon the deficit, and get us stuck in a misbegotten war.  Gary Miller seems to see his position in Congress mostly as a way to make money for his friends.  I swore an oath to defend the Constitution when I was in the Air Force during Viet Nam (1966-1970), and that’s why I’m going to run.  I’m going to swear another oath to defend the Constitution as a Congressman. I didn’t see combat then but that doesn’t stop me from fighting now and when I get to Congress.

No one has elected me to “represent the netroots” in a run for Congress, but I think my opinions on issues reflect those of the broad community.  I want us out of Iraq and back to making the alliances with other countries that we /need/ to fight terrorism.  I want single-payer health insurance that is available to all.  I want a government that respects scientific facts – in global warming and otherwise – rather than fantasies that give them some political advantage – in making policy decisions.  But if there is one issue that motivates me above all others, it’s this:

*I want to defend the Constitution and the rule of law – while we can.*

There are forces in and out of our elected government who think that they have the right to ignore our laws and the fundamental basis for American values.  We see it with signing statements, defying subpoenas, ignoring constitutional amendments, evading Congressional oversight, and flouting federal law.  While this President and Vice-President have stomped on the Constitution, my opponent, Gary Miller, has held their coats.

I’ve been around for a long time and I have never before seen such a concerted effort on the part of a political party to subvert our precious and beloved form of government.  Not even Nixon.  At least Nixon had the honor to leave after even Republicans told him that it was that or be impeached and removed from office.  As I’ve written here, in effect Bush and his associates have been instituting something like a slow coup against our very system of government.  Their monarchical vision of our government is not how our system is supposed to work; we must restore our system to its proper form.

Democrats have control of the House – and control of the Senate when Joe Lieberman is thinking straight – which gives them a lot of power. It’s not total power, but it’s more than they use. Our party has the power to inform and rally and lead Americans. But too many members of our party convince themselves that it’s best to play it safe and wait until 2008, when they hope that things will all get better.

I think that’s wrong.  I think that we need to take the fight to the enemies of our Constitution.

Think back again to the Marines and Army storming the beaches of Normandy.  Imagine where we’d be if they stayed in their LSIs and waited for the enemy to leave!  It’s time that we metaphorically storm the beaches of government and take our country back from the enemy who would destroy it for their own purposes.

If we storm all fronts, from the Water Board to every single Congressional District, we will overwhelm the enemies of the rule of law.  We will make America a better place and restore our values, honor and dignity in the world – and thus our public safety as well.

I want to be part of the second landing wave. The first wave consisted of Jon Tester and Jim Webb, of John Hall, Paul Hodes, Nancy Boyda, Jeremy Kalin, California’s own Jerry McNerney and others who were encouraged – some say in part put into office – by the blogosphere.  It consisted too of people like Brian Keeler who fired a shot across the bow of those who cling to power without serving the public good.  We were part of the solution in 2006.  I believe that we’re helping to foster a fundamental change in America.

I’ve been part of this community for 2-1/2 years.  I’m not a candidate coming /to/ the netroots for support; I’m a candidate coming /from/ the netroots.  I believe that I’m the first “homegrown” netroots candidate to run a viable campaign for the United States Congress.  I won’t be the last.

This is not a vanity or protest campaign. California’s 42nd district is Republican-dominated, but increasingly independent – which means that it’s full of people who think like Democrats whom we have to convince to /vote/ the way they /think/.  It’s a district I can win.  The local party establishment supports me.  My opponent, Gary Miller, has been swimming so long in the ethical cesspool of Congressional privilege that he’s grown gills.  He’s vulnerable – but no one was on the ballot against him in 2006.  No local elected politician in the district – which has too few elected Democrats – is running against him next year.  So I’ve rashly stepped up and strapped up; now I’m going to show up and make people sit up and pay attention.

Part of why my campaign will be noticed – one reason that it has captured the interest of people /outside/ of the blogosphere – is that I am from the netroots and they’ve seen what it can accomplish.  Among the netroots who have been part of an incredible brain trust so far are thereisnospoon, Hekebolos, occams hatchet, clammyc, OrangeClouds115, atdnext, Shockwave, dday, vernonlee, theKK and the many others who’ve been part of this by means of offering their support and good wishes and still keeping it a “secret”. Major Danby will be managing my campaign full-time.  You probably recognize some of those names.  You’ll be reading a lot of diaries about the campaign from them in the days to come.

My aim in this campaign is to bring the netroots to the many wonderful people I’ve been meeting in the grassroots, and to bring back here some of what they have to offer.  With the spirit and broad expertise of the netroots and the local knowledge and drive of the grassroots, I think we can create something different and new.

I will come here looking for money like other candidates do; for the netroots to come out strongly for my campaign will get attention throughout the political world.  But today, having just announced, is not the day for a hard sell.  I’ll just say this: if you’d like to be among the first to contribute to my campaign, please go to my ActBlue page.  The amount of money that people donate, and the number of people donating, will for better or worse dictate much of the reaction that the world beyond the netroots will have towards my campaign.  To show them that we have a chance, we need to show them that we have a base.

This is not just about one candidate or one campaign, but about building a movement.  It’s about the netroots making connections with the grassroots, and with the voting public. The future of our movement is everywhere in the country, in whatever races we choose to focus our efforts.  It’s about re-establishing the rule of law.  It’s about defending America and American ideals. Are we ready to do that together?

Esquire Magazine Endorses Steve Young Ca 48th

( – promoted by SFBrianCL)

Cross Posted at our blog for Steve Young Ca 48th.

This is big and shows that Steve is finally getting some big-time coverage after building a campaign into a grassroots movement.

In its November issue, the national publication made endorsements for all 435 of the coming elections for the U.S. House of Representatives, and for all U.S. Senate and gubernatorial races on the fall ballot.

Here’s the money quote:

…Campbell “blinded” by loyalty, ideology…

It looks like more and more people are catching on to what Steve’s been saying. From the very beginning John Campbell has been nothing but a puppet to the Bush administration. When you look at his web site as pointed out here you know that Campbell doesn’t have an idea what a Congressional Representative is supposed to do.

Esquire gets it and is helping spread the word.

This is no Democrats-right-or-wrong magazine Esquire votes for the person. An email from the campaign points out that:

The magazine did endorse many other California Republicans, including Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger in his re-election bid.

We may disagree with some of their choices but we salute their integrity.

In the California 48th, Esquire says that Republican incumbent John Campbell lacks the independence and vision to deserve re-election: “On issues from the war to taxes, he is simply blinded by loyalty to the White House and by ideology.”

Young is the California Democratic Party’s endorsed candidate for the United States House of Representatives in California’s 48th District. Born in Southern California and raised in Utah, he is a successful attorney who has spent years representing working families in the courtroom.

And in another paragraph highlighting that Esquire gets Steve they point out that

Young’s campaign is founded on a five-point plan to restore vitality to the American economy and reduce America’s record deficits. His positions include: restoring outsourced middle class jobs, ending the occupation of Iraq with honor, offering a multi-pronged solution to immigration, improving educational opportunities for all, protecting pensions and preserving our environment through conservation and innovation.

Buy the magazine and read the entire endorsement. It’ll be worth it.

CA-48 Is ours if we want it. Steve Young is on fire!

The excitement is building in so many races and it’s becoming difficult to figure out who to support they’re flipping so fast. Let’s add another one to that list and this one wasn’t even close a short time ago and this poll DOES NOT include this latest Foleygate/Pagegate Republican meltdown.

This district is so red that everyone wrote it off especially after the special election but no more. This one is for the taking. The poll below shows clearly that exposure is all we need. We rarely have such definitive indicators but here they are.

Oh and rumor has it that based on this poll the Big Dog – yes, that Big Dog – is seriously considering coming out later this month to stand with Steve. ‘Nuff said for now. Now, let’s show that we can make a difference so that others will know we mean business.

Visit our blog here. Marcos wants to see action for a grass roots campaign before he gets excited. Well, look at this.

And go to his site to read all about his positions and other interesting information.

I’ve written about Steve Young in the past here. Read this to get an idea of how great a candidate Steve is and that he’s the right guy to take a seat that has not been held by a Democrat in a very long time.

So, why is he on fire?  Follow me below the fold.

Recently the campaign received the analysis of a poll conducted in the Ca 48th last week by Lake Research Partners. The poll is not online yet. I present to link to have a look at the client list.

The sample size was 300 likely November 006 voters.

The poll was composed of two sample areas:
– an area exposed to advertising and canvassing from Steve’s campaign
– an untargeted area that is 74% registered Republican

Here’s a snippet of the Oct 3 memoranda from Lake Research Partners:

“The following is a summary of key findings from a survey of General Election voters in the 48th Congressional District of California. These findings are based on 600 completed interviews with two matched samples of 300 likely November 2006 voters, one sample from areas exposed to advertising and canvassing from the Young Campaign, and the other sample in areas untargeted by the Young Campaign. Interviews were conducted from September 25-28, 2006. Sampling error is +/- 6% within each area.

  • John Campbell has yet to solidify his relationship to the voters. Voters in the exposed area, despite its Republican leanings, have not committed to re-elect Campbell, with only 32% indicating they would re-elect him, compared to 68% who would either vote for someone else (28%) or consider (40%) voting for someone else. Even in the very heavily Republican area where voters were not exposed to Young messaging, only about half the voters are committed to re-electing Campbell, far below the 74% Republican registration in the area.

  • Where voters have been exposed to Young’s advertising, despite Campbell’s incumbency and a significant Republican registration advantage, the head-to head race is very competitive, with 40% for Campbell and 36% for Young, 3% for Libertarian Bruce Cohen and fully 21% undecided.

  • Voters want to elect someone who will take the country in a significantly different direction than the direction in which President Bush is headed. In the exposed area, only 35% want to keep in the Bush direction, and even in the heavily Republican area (74% Republican), only 44% want a candidate (like Campbell) who would keep in the Bush direction.

  • Voters exposed to information from Steve Young—regardless of party—generally feel more favorably disposed toward him, and more negative toward Bush and more supportive of Young.

Here’s the short version:

Who would you vote for? – from the “Exposed to Steve area”
– 32% Re-elect Campbell – that’s an indication of how low GWB can go.
– 28% Vote for someone else
– 40% Consider voting for someone else

Who would you vote for? – not from the “Exposed to Steve area”
– ~50% Re-elect Campbell – remember this is an area that is 74% registered Republican

Voters who have been exposed to Steve’s message.
– 40% Campbell (R )
– 36% Steve Young (D)
– 3% Bruce (I)
– 21% Undecided !!

Significantly different direction of the country
– 35% stay on the Bush path
– 44% want a candidate to change direction

Here’s the part we can directly affect:

Voters exposed to Steve and information from him, regardless of party, like him, are supportive of him and are more negative to Bush and Bush rubber stamps.

This poll shows that the Ca 48th is ours for the taking. As you can see we need to get Steve’s message out.

Volunteer here and/or contribute here. Don’t forget the $.01 to show that it’s coming from the netroots.

This poll shows that the Ca 48th is ours for the taking. Let’s take it.
