Get Active for Change With Obama OC!

Check out Obama OC’s web site for more on how you can get involved in the Barack Obama campaign here in Orange County! : )

Were you inspired by what Barack Obama had to say to Democrats in San Diego last month? Have you been amazed by all the grassroots energy behind the Obama campaign in California? Are you captivated by the Illinois Senator and what he’s accomplished? And would you now like to get involved?

Well, if you’re in Orange County, there are plenty of opportunities coming up for you to get involved! Follow me after the flip for all the details…

Tonight at 7:00 PM, we’ll be having our Obama OC Countywide Volunteer Meeting. We’ll be talking about what we can do here in OC to spread Barack Obama’s message of hope, action, and change. And of course, we’ll be talking about upcoming actions such as the “Walk for Change” canvasses!

So what can we expect on these canvass walks? Here’s how the folks at Obama for America explain it:

Think of a canvass as a neighborhood walk. Canvasses happen when a group of people get together and go door to door to homes and apartments in a selected neighborhood to spread the message about Barack Obama.

Movements are created one person, one house at a time. One or two individuals can canvass an entire neighborhood and build real support for our campaign to change America.

Your goal in the canvass is to make personal connections with other people who might not know as much about Barack Obama. You are the face of the campaign in your community.

So do you want to be the face of the Obama campaign in your community? Do you want to talk to your neighbors about this different kind of campaign? Would you like to make connections with other people in your area who may not know very much about Barack Obama? Well, then June 9 is your chance to walk for change!

Well, before you get out and walk for change, please check out these events coming up!

Beach Cities for Obama Planning Meeting on June 2 at 12:00 PM in Huntington Beach

Behind the Scenes with Obama and Friends

Yesterday, something amazing happened. Barack Obama came to speak at the convention, and I was able to see him up close. And as he actually spoke downstairs, I had a chance to see him speak from the base of the stage… And I saw the magic of Obama right there, as all of us were mesmerized and blown away.

I’d love to share more about my experience with Team Obama in San Diego yesterday, so why not follow me after the flip for more (including more photos)?

Yesterday, something amazing happened. Barack Obama came to speak at the convention, and I was able to see him up close. And as he actually spoke downstairs, I had a chance to see him speak from the base of the stage… And I saw the magic of Obama right there, as all of us were mesmerized and blown away.

I’d love to share more about my experience with Team Obama in San Diego yesterday, so why not follow me after the flip for more (including more photos)?

All the fun began outside, as Obama supporters braved the morning marine layer and not so warm weather to start building some excitement and give Obama a warm welcome to San Diego. There were convention delegates outside, and there were regular locals. There were always-active progressive Democrats outside, and there were people out there who had never been interested in politics before. No matter where they came from, or what their history of political involvement had been, they were all inspired by that “skinny guy with the funny name”, and they were compelled by his message of hope, action, and change to actually get up and take action.

The mood outside was upbeat and lively, and I had such a difficult time NOT getting caught up in the good feeling.

Unfortunately, I could not stay outside for very long. I needed to return inside, and rejoin my fellow delegates inside the convention center. However as soon as I went inside, I found a couple of old friends from around here. They worked with me on Francine Busby’s campaign for Congress last year, and I was delighted to find out that these rockstar activists are now part of Obama’s grassroots campaign in San Diego.

But anyways, I met my friends, and we were soon swept into a meeting of Obama campaign operatives preparing for the Illinois Senator’s arrival. We were given directions on what to do upstairs to prepare for Obama’s entry in the convention center, and we soon got to work in ensuring that Obama’s time spent here was time well spent. However, our “jobs” did not stop us from snapping photos whenever we had the chance. ; )

After Senator Obama was finished upstairs, it was time for us to go downstairs and prepare for Obama’s grand entry onto the floor. We waited outside, awaiting instructions on where to go on the floor and where to run when we get out and welcome Obama to the stage. At first, we were a little frustrated with the wait…
But in the end, the waiting was all worth it.

After House Speaker Nancy Pelosi finished speaking, we awaited our final move. And when we got the signal to go, we rushed toward the stage, flashing our signs and cheering from the top of our lungs. The exuberance was just palpable from all corners of the floor as all of us were sppeding toward the stage. We were about to finally meet the man of our dreams and our hopes.

Soon, Obama arrived… And we all went wild. And then, he spoke. And once he spoke, the magic truly began.

For good reason, the rest of us have become cynical about what politics can achieve in this country, and as we’ve turned away in frustration, we know what’s filled the void. The lobbyists and influence-peddlers with the cash and the connections – the ones who’ve turned government into a game only they can afford to play. They write the checks and you get stuck with the bills, they get the access while you get to write a letter, they think they own this government, but we’re here to tell them it’s not for sale.

People tell me I haven’t spent a lot of time learning the ways of Washington. But I promise you this – I’ve been there long enough to know that the ways of Washington must change.

I’m running for President because the time for the can’t-do, won’t-do, won’t-even-try style of politics is over. It’s time to turn the page.

And so if we do not change our politics – if we do not fundamentally change the way Washington works – then the problems we’ve been talking about for the last generation will be the same ones that haunt us for generations to come.

We must find a way to come together in this country – to realize that the responsibility we have to one another as Americans is greater than the pursuit of any ideological agenda or corporate bottom line.

Democrats of California, it’s time to turn the page.

We are one signature away from ending this war [in Iraq]. If the President refuses to sign it, we will go back and find the sixteen votes we need to end this war without him. We will turn up the pressure on all those Republican Congressmen and Senators who refuse to acknowledge the reality that the American people know so well, and we will get this done. We will bring our troops home. It’s time to turn the page.

It’s time to show the world that America is still the last, best hope of Earth. This President may occupy the White House, but for the last six years the position of leader of the free world has remained open.

It’s time to fill that role once more. Whether it’s terrorism or climate change, global AIDS or the spread of weapons of mass destruction, America cannot meet the threats of this new century alone, but the world cannot meet them without America. It’s time for us to lead.

It’s time for us to show the world that we are not a country that ships prisoners in the dead of night to be tortured in far off countries. That we are not a country that runs prisons which lock people away without ever telling them why they are there or what they are charged with. We are not a country which preaches compassion to others while we allow bodies to float down the streets of a major American city.

That is not who we are.

We are America. We are the nation that liberated a continent from a madman, that lifted ourselves from the depths of Depression, that won Civil Rights, and Women’s Rights, and Voting Rights for all our people. We are the beacon that has led generations of weary travelers to find opportunity, and liberty, and hope on our doorstep. That’s who we are.

I was crushed. I was grumbled at. I was uncomfortable contorting my tiny body on the cold, hard ground. However, I did not care. I was having the time of my life as I was watching perhaps the greatest speech ever spoken unfold in front of me. We all cheered, and we all knew that we made the right choice in going with Obama. And once Obama finished speaking, more people rushed to the floor to catch a glimpse of him, touch him, speak with him, just see someone who is actually inviting us to join in this campaign. Obama may be the big celebrity here, but he also empowered us by reaffirming that this campaign really is about us, and about our hopes to end the war, and protect our climate and our planet, and clean up the slimy ways of Washington. We were all empowered, and we all wanted to thank Obama for giving us this opportunity for hope, action, and change.

My world had turned on its head, and I was loving it. I may have already decided to support this person for President, but this completely sealed the deal for me. Whether it was all the people outside, or seeing the actual candidate inside, I got the feeling that I had made the right choice. I think I have become a part of something special, and I can hardly wait to see where all these hopes and dreams go from here. : )

(P.S.: If you want to see the full text of Obama’s speech yesterday, go to Lynn Sweet’s blog on The Chicago Sun-Times web site.)

Guess Who Also Cares About Climate Change in OC?

(Cross-posted at The Obama OC Grassroots Blog : ) – promoted by atdleft)

OK, so just found out about what happened at the Day of Climate Action in Huntington Beach yesterday. Well, the marchers weren’t the only ones in HB to talk about climate change. Obama OC Grassroots also made its presence known at the pier yesterday as local grassroots activists registered new voters, talked about the many challenges facing us regarding climate change, and how Barack Obama is ready to lead on finding real solutions.

Follow me after the flip to find out more about what happened after the rally…
And, of course, for more pictures! ; )

As the rally was getting started at Pier Plaza, the Obama Grassroots team was setting up a table. And as soon as the march began, Team Obama stayed at the pier to register voters and answer any questions about Barack Obama, the grassroots campaign in Orange County, and what he plans to do about climate change should he be elected as our 44th President. Even though the gloomy clouds were beginning to roll in from the Pacific, it was all smiles for Team Obama!

We had a couple of people come up to the table to fill out voter registration forms. Whether or not they had made their decision yet on Obama, we wanted to give them a chance to engage in the democratic process. Now we had plenty more people come up to the table to ask us about where Obama stands on the issues. They wanted to know about how Obama plans to tackle climate change, meet America’s future energy needs, clean up all the corruption in government, and end the Iraq War. We answered all their questions as best as we could, and most were quite surprised to learn about all that Obama has done on these issues. It never ceases to amaze me how people come to like and respect Obama once they learn about all that he’s actually done on all these issues.

We were all pleasantly surprised to hear from local progressives who are as wowed about Obama and all is accomplishments as we were. Of course, we were also surprised to hear from previously apathetic folks who are suddenly excited about politics and the state of the nation again because of Barack Obama and his message of hope, action, and change. And yes, we were heart-warmed to see local environmentalists smile in delight once we showed them that Obama is not just providing rhetoric about climate change, our energy future, and the state of our planet…
He’s actually doing something about it now!

Perhaps this is what I like most about our Obama OC Grassroots team, and about Senator Barack Obama. It’s not about empty rhetoric, but it is about real action. It’s not about wishful thinking, but it is about real hope for real change. : )

All the Candidates Come to OC (Virtually)

“I’m appalled at the money involved” in campaigns, said retiree Virginia Laddey, 85. “That’s why I like MoveOn. We get heard without having $2,300 (the contribution limit).”

(From OC Register)

And yes, I got to meet Virginia last night at the MoveOn town hall in Irvine last night. Actually, I was able to meet quite a few terrific Democrats (and others) from all over Orange County as we met in Irvine to see what the 2008 Democratic Presidential Candidates had to say about ending the Iraq War. We all listened to what the candidates had to say, and we all came to our own conclusions.

Some were deeply impressed by what Dennis Kucinich had to say about ending the war, while others just couldn’t understand how he’s a serious candidate. Some were glad to hear Hillary Clinton come out strongly in favor of ending the war, while others still thought that she was “waffling” on whether she’d really withdraw all the troops out of Iraq. Many were convinced last night that Barack Obama has what it takes to end the war, while others still have many questions about the Illinois Senator.

So do you still have questions about the MoveOn parties last night? Well, go ahead and read the rest of today’s OC Register piece on the Orange County meetings to see what OC Democrats are thinking right now about the candidates.

The 2008 Candidates. On Iraq. TONIGHT!

Do you still have questions about where Barack Obama stands on ending the Iraq War? Do you just want to know more specifics about Hillary Clinton’s plan to end the war? Do you want to know how John Edwards would bring the troops home? Do you want to know what all these Democratic candidates have to say about Iraq?

Well, tonight is your chance! Go see the MoveOn Iraq War town hall debate tonight, and learn more about what all the candidates think about the war. I can guarantee you right now that there’s one in your neck of the woods, so you don’t have to go too far to see all the Democratic Presidential Candidates… But I can’t guarantee how long space will last, as these parties are filling up fast!

So what are you waiting for? If you’re in Orange County, go to one of our local debate parties tonight. If you’re somewhere else, go ahead and find a party near you. You’ll get to meet other progressive Democrats in your area, and you might just find the right candidate for you tonight. : )

BREAKING: Barack Obama Raises AT LEAST $25 MILLION!

This just in from The Chicago Tribune:

Sen. Barack Obama raised at least $25 million dollars during the first quarter for his presidential campaign, a total surprisingly close to the $26 million collected by his chief rival for the Democratic nomination, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Obama actually may have raised more for the primary campaign than the former first lady, but that cannot be definitively known because the Clinton campaign has refused to say how much of its total is designated for the primary election versus the general election.

“This overwhelming response, in only a few short weeks, shows the hunger for a different kind of politics in this country and a belief at the grassroots level that Barack Obama can bring out the best in America to solve our problems,” said Penny Pritzker, Obama’s finance chair.

Oh, my! Watch out, everyone! This field is WIDE OPEN, and boy is it givine me hope! Follow me after the flip for more on this great development:

Now here’s some more good news from the Obama Campaign:

Obama raised $6.9 million-more than a quarter of his total-over the Internet from more than 50,000 online donors, the Illinois Democrat’s campaign said from Chicago this morning.

Overall, Obama received contributions from more than 100,000 individuals, his campaign said. Clinton received donations from about 50,000 people, while Edwards took in money from about 37,000 donors.

Obama’s campaign said that at least $23.5 million of its first-quarter collection would be available for the primary campaign, an important distinction because candidates are able to raise money now for both the primary and general elections.

Obviously, Obama has BROAD SUPPORT from throughout the nation, as over 100,000 PEOPLE across America have demonstrated their belief in Obama’s vision of hope, action, and change in this nation by giving donations to the Obama Campaign. And oh yes, he’s obviously enjoying plenty of success online as people use My.BarackObama.com to raise money, build community, and basically do great grassroots campaigning online. It’s just so exciting to see how Obama is taking all this grassroots support and running with it.

Now, I only hope that Obama uses all this money well. I hope he uses it to continue growing the grassroots here in California and elsewhere. I hope he uses this money to invest in building A REAL CAMPAIGN OF HOPE, ACTION, AND CHANGE that gives us all something to be excited about. After eight years of George W. Bush and his politics of division and destruction, it’s time for us to be excited and hopeful again.

Hope, Action, & Change With Obama OC Grassroots!

Remember when I told you about that Obama OC community gathering in Laguna Niguel on Saturday? Well, I went there… And I found out that in the supposedly “Solid Republican Territory” of South Orange County, there was plenty of interest in joining the local grassroots campaign for Barack Obama!

Follow me after the flip to enjoy some more photos from Saturday’s big event…

Orange County leaders Zinnia Menardi and Renee Schwan are always more than happy to answer your questions about what you can do to help Obama in OC.

South County Leader Giovanni Jorquera talks about what’s happening with the campaign in South County. Zinnia then talks about what it means to be a part of Obama’s grassroots campaign in Orange County. I guess it means writing letters to The OC Register, and planning for the next antiwar rally, and registering new voters at the community colleges… Basically, the grassroots campaign is each of us doing what we do best to reach out to the community and get them involved in this election.

South County leader Sandie Weathers gets the projector ready for the feature presentation…

And here it is! : )

OK, so you may have missed this meeting on Saturday…
No worries! Go onto our new web site, and scroll down to the bottom of the page to join our mailing list so that you can find out about all of our future events!

Go onto My.BarackObama.com to find out how this campaign is ALL ABOUT YOU, and WHAT YOU CAN DO TO TAKE BACK OUR NATION from the far right and their politics of personal enrichment and global domination. Go ahead and check it out… Don’t let us OC folks be the only ones having fun with this! : )

OC Democrats Talk About the Iraq War

The Laguna Woods Democratic Club wants to give Orange County Democrats a chance to tell their representatives to the state party how they feel about ending the Iraq War. On March 31, the club will be hosting Defining the New Direction: Orange County Democrats Voice Their Views on the War in Iraq. This will give Democrats from throughout Orange County a chance to talk to the delegates who will be representing them at the CDP Convention next month about how, when, and why they want to see the Iraq War end. As the delegates prepare to vote on resolutions regarding the war, this is a chance for local Democrats to tell the delegates what they think.

From OC Democrat Weekly, Orange County’s e-Newsletter for Democrats and source for progressive action:

Saturday, March 31, 2pm, Laguna Woods: Orange County Democrats are invited to attend a forum on the Iraq War presented by the Laguna Woods Democratic Club, Richard Lara (State Delegate representing the 67th Assembly District), and other California delegates. The event is Saturday, March 31, 2:00 to 5:00 p.m., in Clubhouse One, main dining room. Theme of the forum is “Defining the New Direction: Orange County Democrats Voice Their Views on the War in Iraq.” A keynote speaker, to be announced, and delegates to the April 2007 Democratic State Convention will be attending in order to listen to audience participants and respond in a town hall meeting. All Club members and residents of Laguna Woods Village are invited to attend, as are Orange County Democrats and other interested people. For more information, contact Richard Lara, 714-369-5647/[email protected], or Linda Nearing, 949-460-0640/[email protected] .

Ethical Consumption: Saving the World While You Shop

Every time we spend money, we tell the world a little about ourselves. What are we saying when we buy a shirt that was made by a 12 year old girl working in harsh conditions for virtually no money? Are we comfortable purchasing a household appliance from a retailer that cheats its employees and uses prejudicial hiring practices? Is it O.K. that buying a wrench from Multi-Mega corporation helps run our neighbor Bob’s 4th generation hardware store out of business? Join us as we learn how to say “I care deeply about this planet and everything on it” every time we buy something. Join us for this enlightening talk which gives practical helps on finding the right companies to do business with at the Unitarian Universalist Church in Costa Mesa.

The event is tomorrow at 1:30 PM in Costa Mesa.
