Joe Nation – In The Pocket of Big Business

The race in Senate District Three is essentially between Mark Leno and Joe Nation.  Mark Leno is the proven progressive.  Joe Nation is pretending to be a progressive in order to skate through to victory.  His true stripes, however, are unquestionably pro-corporate.  In case there was any doubt that Joe Nation is in the pocket of big business and will quickly drop his progressive charade if elected, the recent expenditures for his campaign put those doubts to rest.

The anti-consumer, “tort reform” group Civil Justice Association of California recently spent $240,000 sending out mailers for Joe Nation. A group like this does not spend a quarter million on a politician without expecting something in return. What does this anti-consumer organization expect in return?  You need look no further than their own description: “Industry-sponsored California group, advocating legal reforms to restrict tort recovery.”

Put simply, groups like this want politicians to put business rights ahead of consumer rights.  They want to erase or water down all of California's laws that protect injured consumers and introduce new laws that protect businesses at the expense of taxpayers and consumers.

Joe Nation already has proven that he will side with businesses over consumers.  For example, he joined the Republicans and the credit card companies and voted against Jackie Spier's landmark privacy legislation.  He has sided with Republicans and the insurance companies in opposing a single-payer health solution.  Now, Joe Nation has 240,000 new reasons to side with the anti-consumer, pro-corporate interests.

Joe Nation is no progressive.  Don't be fooled into thinking he is.

Want to Meet Joe Wilson and Ron Shepston in Los Angeles?

Despite the unwillingness of our Democratic Congress (Rep. Wexler notwithstanding) to do their Constitutional duty to hold the criminals in the Bush Administration accountable for their actions, the major sacrifices made by and injuries done to Valerie Plame, Joe Wilson and their colleagues and associates will not soon be forgotten by those of us who care deeply about our country.  This nation owes them a debt of gratitude for their service and their willingness to tell the truth in spite of incredible hostility and pressure from a corrupt and utterly immoral White House and its cronies.

Those progressive patriots of you who live in the Southern California area will have the opportunity to meet Joe Wilson himself at a fundraiser in Beverly Hills tomorrow (Thursday) at 6:30pm for the equally courageous Netroots candidate Ron Shepston.  I’ll be there as well, for what that’s worth!

Most of the Netroots community is familiar by now with Ron and his campaign.  Ron started blogging as CanYouBeAngryAndStillDream.  At a blogger dinner in Los Angeles, a bunch of us realized that there was no serious challenger running against the uber-corrupt Gary Miller in CA-42  (The DCCC has produced a must-see video on Gary Miller’s disgusting tax evasion scheme–just one of many reasons the guy has got to go, together with all his GOP friends).  So we asked Ron if he would consider running–and the rest is history.  Ron has since run a netroots-based campaign to win in this tough but doable district, with the inimitable dday as his Netroots Coordinator.  For more about Ron, you can see his quick bio here, and his issues page here.

Want to meet Ron and Joe Wilson?  Just head on over to Beverly Hills at 6:30pm this Thursday night for the $50 fundraiser!  You can see details at the Facebook event page, or download the info from Ron’s campaign homepage.  Tickets can be purchased either at the door or online.

There will also a lunch with Ambassador Wilson and Ron Shepston in Los Angeles at 1pm (no donation limit has been set).  If you’re interested in attending the luncheon, feel free to email erik_at_ronshepston_dot_com and they’ll have more information for you.

Hope to see you there!

No Occupancy for Blackwater

I work for the Courage Campaign

The City of San Diego has decided against issuing a certificate of occupancy to Blackwater (pdf):

Dear Mr. Bonfiglio,

The City will not issue a certificate of occupancy for the above referenced project pursuant to Section 129.0114 of the San Diego Municipal Code (SDMC). The portions of the building identified for use as a shooting range and vocational/trade school shall not be occupied until a certificate of occupancy has been issued for this change of use or occupancy pursuant to SDMC Section 129.0113.

Which basically means that Blackwater can’t open up shop until going through a full public review process as ordered by the Mayor (replacing the previously planned stop-work order).  In the meantime though, San Diego’s development services director Kelly Broughton continues to play dumb, telling KPBS “I don’t see that I would have had any other choice but to approve it because it complied with our municipal code and the California Building Code.” Of course, it doesn’t comply at all, which is why Rep. Bob Filner, several members of the City Council, the City Attorney and Mayor have all now stepped in to correct the flawed process.

For his part, Blackwater spokesman Mike Neil is grasping almost laughably at straws in response:

Neil said Blackwater’s own analysis shows that the company is entitled to occupy the Otay Mesa facility and a delay could jeopardize Blackwater’s long-standing contract with the Navy to train sailors in anti-terrorism tactics. A delay could damage the company’s business reputation and “cause harm to national security.”

I’m really not impressed that Blackwater has decided that Blackwater is right. And if Blackwater is so concerned about hanging onto this contract, they might have wanted to engage in this process honestly. But at least they continue to blow off even the pretense that this would be a vocational school.  Not even lip service to the notion.  Finally, for all the lame bluster about the threat to national security if Blackwater loses this contract, let’s not lose sight of the fact that, even if this were true (obviously it’s not true and is in fact absurd), it’s not a good thing.  Blackwater’s contention is that San Diego should break its local government because the military can’t handle its own training.

Well that’s exactly what Donald Rumsfeld had in mind back in 2001 when he decided it was time to save the Pentagon from itself by privatizing everything in sight.  As I remember it, the ensuing years have demonstrated that Donald Rumsfeld is not right about very much, and this is one example. So even if Blackwater were right that its vital to military readiness- that would just be all the more reason to put the training back in the hands of the military. Blackwater has been nothing but trouble, and cementing any “necessity” for them would be wrong on so many levels. Good for their bottom line- which is what they care about- but not good for San Diego, the U.S. military, the country overall or the world at large.  Less Blackwater is the goal.

Random Bullet Points

What's going on in California politics? Here's some things that I found:

  • To the right, you see a video from WhyTuesday.org about an HBO promo event for the HBO movie Recount coming out this Sunday. They brought some of the Florida butterfly ballot machines and let people experience FL voting.  Hilarity ensues!
  • Prop 98 keeps picking up opponents. (I do work for No on 98.) Today, the Redding Record Searchlight opposed it and the Desert Sun went No, along with several others, yesterday.  The Nos are leading the Yes editorials something like 45-3. In SD-03, Joe Nation has announced his opposition, while Leno and Migden have long been outspoken critics.  Also, yesterday the campaign released it's "Fortune 500" List of Landlords who have donated to Yes on 98. Thomas Coates alone gave $500,000 in the hopes of getting a windfall from the end of rent control.
  • The Lottery Commission lowered their estimates for revenue by about $275 million.  Oops! That makes Arnold's projections of doubling revenue within ten years a bit sketchy, huh?
  • Speaking of the lottery, Peter Schrag has a great column on the lottery's past and future.  I was at a debate for my high school government class between then Gov. Ann Richards and GW Bush (then just a grade A doofus sans any real power), when Ann Richards brought the house down with a remark about the lottery. I can't do it justice with the pixelated word, but it was something like "I just think gambling is a cheesy way to make money." It was and is.  As Shrag points out, it's not been anything close to a panacea for our schools, and it creates other messes.  When it comes to funding, you can try all sorts of gimmicks, but there is no replacing the one guaranteed revenue source: taxes.
  • Fun Times on HSR

The CA High-speed rail authority has some cool new ways to make you really, really wish we had HSR.  First, we have the video to the right. They’ve also done a rather cool little Flash “simulator” for the proposed route from San Francisco and Sacramento in the North all the way down to San Diego in the South.  It has a series of animated pictures showing the proposed development along the route, some wind farms, some new big buildings.

They still have the Gallery of images and video if you want something a bit more detailed. They have a specific “Bay Area” video as well.

Also, check out Robert’s High Speed Rail Blog.

    Maldonado–Democrat?

Warning:  This is rumor.  There has been NO verification of this.

I have heard that Abel Maldonado plans to run in the Democratic Primary as a write in candidate to defeat Dennis Morris.  As I understand it, the old cross primary law is defunct unless we are talking about write in candidates.

Does anyone else know about this?

Michael Savage plays Dead Kennedys song “in some respect for” Sen. Kennedy

Title stolen from Media Matters.  They listen to right-wing talk radio to keep an eye on what they are saying thank goodness.  Today in the wake of the announcement that Sen. Teddy Kennedy has a brain tumor Michael Savage decided to play the Dead Kennedys “in some respect for” the Senator.  Here is the Media Matter’s summary.  You can listen to it on their site and read the full transcript.  digg it

On the day it was announced that Sen. Ted Kennedy had been diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor, nationally syndicated radio host Michael Savage opened his show by interspersing audio of Kennedy singing “Ay Jalisco No Te Rajes” with clips of news reporters discussing Kennedy’s diagnosis and audio from Kindergarten Cop in which Arnold Schwarzenegger’s character says, “It’s not a tumor.” Later, Savage played the Dead Kennedys song “California Über Alles” after stating: “The poor guy’s been suffering for years, you know? Unfairly he’s been accused of alcoholism, but we see now that it was something much more deep-seated. And so, to cut this out in some respect for Ted Kennedy, here’s a tune coming at you from the Dead Kennedys. Go ahead and play it, please.”

This is absolutely despicable.  Senator Kennedy is revered on both sides of the aisle as a “senator’s senator” and is at least partially responsible for just about every major piece of positive legislation in the past 40 years.  He will go into the history books as one of the greatest and most influencial Senators in United States history.  While Savage may not like his politics, Sen. Kennedy is owed respect, especially this day of all days.

That wasn’t all Savage had to say.

At one point in the program, he told a caller, “You know I’m playing the Dead Kennedys not to mock Ted Kennedy. It’s just appropriate, that’s all.”

You know what is appropriate…for Savage’s advertisers and the stations that cary him to hear from you.  Savage is SF based and aired all over the state.  According to this site, these stations carry Savage’s radio show.

CA Lt. Gov. John Garamendi Endorses Pettis, Joins All Local Democratic Clubs Who Endorsed (80th AD)

Xposted 5/20/2008 8:58 PM PDT on MyDesert.com by BluePalmSpringsBoyz

The Greg Pettis for 80th Assembly District campaign announced earlier that Lt. Gov. John Garamendi, the highest-ranking Democratic elected official in California endorsed Pettis for the 80th AD to replace the termed-out, thank God, Bonnie Garcia (R).  The campaign Press Release is as follows:

Lieutenant Governor John Garamendi, the highest-ranking Democratic official in state government, has endorsed Greg Pettis in the open 80th Assembly District race.

“While Democrats in the 80th AD are fortunate to have a wealth of choices this year, I’m getting behind Greg Pettis because he has a long record of results that matter to families throughout the Coachella and Imperial Valleys, and the experience to deliver on the promise of creating a healthier California,” Garamendi said.

    More below the flip…

    Continuing the Press Release:

“We need to put this seat in the hands of someone who will be ready from the first day in office to make our health care system more affordable and accessible, to improve our economy by reducing the achievement gap in our schools and keeping college affordable for more students and to take the lead in combating global climate change,” Garamendi added.

Garamendi specifically lauded Pettis for his work expanding CSUSB campus in Palm Desert to accommodate more students, negotiating the Multi-Species Habitat Act to manage growth and conserve water and for creating over 1,000 new jobs in Cathedral City through the downtown revitalization project.

Pettis welcomed Garamendi’s endorsement and said he looked forward to working with him on a host of issues including creating a universal health care system, growing CSU’s branch campus in the Imperial Valley and increasing the use of renewable fuels to reduce carbon emissions.

Garamendi joins a long list of elected officials supporting Pettis including State Controller John Chiang; former State Controller Steve Westly; State Board of Equalization Member Judy Chu; incoming State Senate pro-tem Darrell Steinberg; State Senators Carol Migden, Christine Kehoe and Sheila Kuehl; and State Assemblymembers Mike Eng, John Laird, Lloyd Levine, Mark Leno and Ted Lieu.

Garamendi thus follows suit with every local Democratic Club which has chosen to endorse, including the Desert Stonewall Democratic Club, the Desert Hot Springs Democratic Club, the Palm Springs Democratic Club, the Pass Democratic Club, the San Diego Democratic Club, and the San Diego Democratic Women’s Club, as well as most progressive Democratic-leaning organizations.

Pettis was also endorsed by the California National Organization for Women, Equality California, Victory Fund, Progressive Majority, and HONOR PAC.  California NOW endorsed Pettis, not providing dual endorsement, as his prime competitor, Victor Manuel Perez, was unable to articulate a coherent position on Women’s Rights and freedom of choice.  That Perez as a candidate is unable to state unequivocally that he supports a woman’s right to choose is patently unprogressive.  Equality California (EQCA) endorsed Pettis for his consistent and openly-stated support for Marriage Equality, unlike his Democratic challengers such as Rick Gonzales and Richard Gutierrez in public Democratic forums opposed Marriage Equality.  Perez equivocated, stating general support for Civil Rights for LGBT community members, but refused to state unequivocally that he would vote for Marriage Equality in the State Assembly.  In addition, at the Sun City Democratic Club Candidate’s forum, Perez stated in his opening statement that he was not a member of ‘an alternative lifestyle.’  Anyone in the LGBT community knows that this is code.  Not speaking of the DaVinci variety.

The Desert Sun in its editorial endorsement of Pettis for the 80th AD specifically spoke of Pettis’ ability to ‘hit the ground running’ if elected as well as his extensive local administrative and legislative experience.  The endorsement inferred that his Democratic opponents lacked similar administrative skills and experience, troubling to the voters of the West Valley, East Valley, and Imperial Valley.
