Edwards comes to California to set the rest of the Country in the right direction, his!

On a union rooftop in downtown LA, I stood and waited for John Edwards.  I took day off from work to drive from Irvine to LA.  The traffic was bearable and I managed some parking as well.  I ran into other local Edwards supporters from Orange County who were volunteering through the Progressive Democrats of America.  It was nice to see some friendly faces and I was eager to hear John Speak, as was the rest of the crowd.  They broke into changing “John Edwards” and their enthusiasm gave me the chills.

It seemed like people were paying attention, that they knew we had to give him a chance to speak and I really hope more than the people on the rooftop will have a chance to hear what he said, it’s for all of us.

Go here, to Brad Blog for the entire speech, it is well worth the listen and it was amazing.

John made an important point about why California mattered this year.  Are you reading this California? If you support Edwards, it is imparative that you not only vote for him, but that you make your presence known, let people know John is still in the race, not just for you or me, but from them too.

“I am an underdog campaign, but this is where you come in,” he said in closing, his voice rising. “You can help us here in California, help a grassroots movement that spreads across this state, that spreads across this country. When that tidal wave of change is finished, we will be able to look our children in eye and say, ‘We did for our you what our parents did for us.'”

Edwards took the time to criticize Arnold for his massive spending cuts to Education, Health Care, etc.   The state is losing revenue from guess what?  That’s right, the housing crisis.  The last thing we need to cut are services that help families that are on the verge of losing their homes or are upside down on their mortgages due to the huge decline in housing values.  My home has lost 10% of it’s value in one year, what if I have a major illness?  What if I lose my job?  I would be that much closer to losing my home when it’s not even worth what I bought for a year ago.

He fired up the crowd by ripping into California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s proposed education and state health care budget cuts. “The last thing that needs to happen in the state of California is to have any of the funding that is that is necessary to provide health care for Californians cut,” he said, adding: “Who in the world in America thinks we have too much money invested in public education? This makes absolutely no sense.”

Above are three of the people who helped introduce Edwards to the LA Crowd in the downtown headquarters of a local SEIU Union Hall.  I really enjoyed Annelle Grajeda’s introduction the most, she really focussed on why Edwards is the candidate not just for union families, but working families.

“John Edwards is the change candidate in this campaign — the candidate with not only the boldest ideas for change, but the candidate who can win in November, strengthen Democratic majorities in Congress and at the state level, and make his ideas a reality,” said SEIU CA State Council President Annelle Grajeda. “John Edwards can go to any part of the country and help Democrats down-ballot. With John Edwards as our nominee, we can get the change we need.”

“I’m proud to support John Edwards because he understands, better than any other candidate, the challenges facing working Americans,” said L.A. City Councilman Richard Alarcón. “Whether it’s truly universal health care, fixing America’s trade policy or ending America’s involvement in Iraq, John Edwards has offered real solutions to the challenges Americans face, and he’s determined to be a voice for regular people. I truly believe we need his leadership in the White House.”

“After eight years of George Bush, it is critical that we have a Democrat in the White House,” said L.A. City Councilman Herb Wesson. “We need a candidate who can bring real change to America and who can win. That candidate is John Edwards. He can compete and win in every part of the country, including red states and battleground states because Americans identify with who he is and what he stands for – fairness and opportunity and making sure everyone has a chance.”

Alercon made a great point, why are we paying so much attention to New Hampshire and Iowa?  Californians need to change the tone of the race and really send the most important message of all, well monied campaigns are great, but it doesn’t mean they have to win, even in big states like California.

“I’m asking you, California, are you going to follow Iowa? Are you going to follow New Hampshire? Or are you going to stand alone as Californians and also send a message across America?”

John addressed an issue that is so important to Californians, alternative sources of power.  I came across this on youtube from yesterday’s rally and wanted to add it.

Photobucket

Didn’t take this one, it was from the opposite side of the rooftop.

The comments that hit me the most are the ones about comparing the the wages and bonuses of CEO’s (Health care CEO makes 200 million) and the profits of large corporations (Oil company rakes in 40 BILLION in profits as families struggle to pay for heating oil!) to the millions of Americans who are lacking Health Care, housing, food and education.

John Edwards does not want to cut profits and wages, he wants to insure that no one is left behind while the people on top profit to excess.  It’s the disparity that’s troublesome to me, to John and to many others.  At what point is it okay to make a profit while denying coverage to people who pay their benefits?  And John is standing his ground on Mandates, he’s proud to say his plan requires that people get health care and that pre-existing conditions will be a thing of the past.  Your health care should go with you, where ever you work and what ever you do.  Imagine that?

Photobucket

You could tell how much he loved the crowd and how happy he was to be there, his energy level was amazing as was his candor, his honesty and his ability to bring it down to just a few important points.  The system is broken and when it does work, it’s working for far too few and leaving so many out, mostly working families and single household families with working mothers.  (Personal rant, why the hell can’t we help those women who stick, who stay to raise their children?  Why must shelters turn away women with children to go back to the streets?  How is this okay in any society?  I ask this as a child of a single mother, who lived in dingy apartments, relatives basements and other conditions to escape an abusive relationship.  This was a bold move for my mother to make in 1972 and it’s not any easier 35 years later?)

Photobucket

“To get real change, we need a president who will stand up against the big corporations and powerful interests who control Washington,” said Edwards. “The American people – whether they live in rural areas or urban areas, red states or blue states – need a President who will stand up for them. As President, I will make sure the voices of all Americans are heard in Washington. If we fight together, we can get the change we need and America will rise.”

And there were a few times where John had to stop talking because th cheering was just not going to quit.  He loved it, he knew his message was getting to the right people.

Photobucket

The photo I took as I tried to get closer and talk to John. Ha!  Right.

This is where I was, in the back, happy to see all the media and news vans, thank God.

At the end John was swarmed by so many people and I had chosen to be far back rather than up front where I started.  I regret not being a bit closer, just so I could at least tell him one thing, I’m proud that I support him, I’m proud of the campaign he’s running and I don’t regret being such a vocal supporter of his, he’s really proven to me that I made the right choice.  He’s still fighting, so I too will continue.

This woman and her son were waiting to say hi to John, but she didn’t dare try to push forward, so I asked if I could take their photo.  Her son was so happy to be there too, he was bouncing, he was giggling and he was joyful.  It made my day!

And here are some photos of the rally that other people took, which are so much better than mine.  I need a nicer camera!

I voted for John yesterday as did my Mother.  She was happy too.

I saved this from our kick off meeting, Orange County for Edwards.  It’s Stephanie, my cousin and some kid I found hanging out at my house 🙂

Here is a local report of Edwards’ visit.

And last but not least, please don’t foget today is the day.  Edwards can raise money, please donate!

Photobucket

I waited until today to donate $100.  I don’t have it really but I’m still doing it because I think it’s that important.

Unbelievable! CNN narrows the Field of Candidates!

Once again in the Corporate Media makes an “Executive Decision”, about who America should see as their Viable Choices:

Hillary Clinton

Barack Obama

John McCain

Rudy Giuliani

Mike Huckabee

Mitt Romney

Only these Candidates were the Focus of the latest CNN Poll

Where is John Edwards in this Poll?

(for that matter where is Ron Paul?)

[Edwards has done better than Giuliani, by a long shot!]

So much for Free Speech! So much for the Democratic Process playing itself out! So much for letting the People decide.

The Media Executives apparently feel it’s their Constitutional Right to narrow down your choices for you — They Know What’s best for us!

(Or is it really they know what’s best for them?)

New Poll results from that COM (Corporate Owned Media) with the “best political team on Television”:

CNN Opinion Poll

Interviews with 1,033 adult Americans conducted by telephone by Opinion Research Corporation on January 9-10, 2008. The margin of sampling error for results based on the total sample is plus or minus 3 percentage points.

FOR RELEASE: SATURDAY, JANUARY 12 AT 2 PM

Here is a typical Question from this Poll, using their “filtered” version of reality:

11. For each of the following candidates, please tell me whether you will definitely vote for that person in November if they won their party’s nomination, whether you might consider voting for that person, or whether you will definitely not vote for that person in November. (RANDOM ORDER)

Definitely For | Consider Voting for | Definitely Not Vote for | No Opinion

Hillary Clinton 37% 19% 43% *

Barack Obama 30% 32% 38% *

John McCain 22% 35% 43% *

Rudy Giuliani 19% 25% 55% *

Mike Huckabee 15% 31% 52% 1%

Mitt Romney 13% 25% 62% 1%

A search of this entire Poll, shows Edwards Name is NOT mentioned anywhere! … (apparently he “was abducted by Aliens”!)

Did Edwards quit Running?

Did Edwards do worse than Giuliani or Romney?

What gives CNN the Right to Censor Edwards from this Opinion Poll?

(An Opinion Poll that the Media Bobble-heads, will no doubt repeat at nauseum for the next week, too.)

Could it be that CNN did not quite like the Results, when Edwards was included in their last Poll?

CNN poll: Edwards DESTROYS GOP candidates
(with graphs!)

by BruinKid – Thu Dec 13, 2007

Maybe CNN was worried about another strong showing by Edwards, if he was included in their Jan. Poll?

This is simply Outrageous!

No matter which Candidate you support, the Media should not be empowered to make arbitrary decisions like this!

In my opinion, if John Edwards received half the coverage that Obama and Clinton have, the results of those 1st two elections would have been very different.

The corporate media blackout of John Edwards gets worse

by JedReport – Sat Jan 05, 2008

The Constitution vested the power to pick our Candidates with us — WE the People

And NOT Them the Corporate Media!

Where will this Media’s “streamlining of reality” end?

They sold us the Iraq War, with a smile and a cheer — what will they try to sell us next?

CA-12: Jackie Speier To Announce Sunday

It’s offical, Jackie Speier is in according to the San Francisco Examiner. Following the announced retirement of Tom Lantos, she will make her announcement Sunday to represent the solid blue CA-12.

Former state Sen. Jackie Speier, who survived a hail of bullets in Jonestown and made her political career on the Peninsula for nearly three decades, will announce her candidacy for the U.S. House of Representatives on Sunday.

Speier’s announcement will come 11 days after longtime Democratic Congress member Tom Lantos revealed that he has been diagnosed with esophageal cancer and will not seek a 15th term in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Speier’s former campaign finance manager Christine Krolik confirmed that Speier would announce her intentions to represent California’s 12th Congressional District, which includes southwestern San Francisco and northern San Mateo County.

For those not familiar with her life history, she is very lucky to be with us today, much less running for Congress.

Though she built a long political career on the Peninsula, Speier is also known for the harrowing fact-finding trip to Jonestown to investigate allegations of human-rights abuses with congressman Leo Ryan, for whom Speier began her career as a congressional staffer.

Ryan was killed on Nov. 18, 1978, and Speier was injured when followers of the Rev. Jim Jones opened fire on them near the group’s compound in Guyana.

Speier will make her announcement Sunday at noon at Leo Ryan Park in Foster City. If her congressional bid is successful, she will be elected 30 years to the month after the Jonestown massacre.

“She says that event made her fearless,” Krolik said. “And that fearlessness makes her an effective fighter for the people she represents.

She has represented San Mateo County in the State Senate and on the Board of Supervisors (at the time, the youngest ever elected to the Board). Her potential opponent is senate successor Leland Yee. However, she starts with a strong advantage in the race. She is talented, hard working and will be a great addition to the California delegation, though it likely takes her out of the running for statewide office in 2010. Whoever wins, there is no doubt the Bay Area will be the center of attention in June.

And this just into my email box.

Greetings!

Please come join me, Sunday, January 13th, at Leo J. Ryan Park, in Foster City, as I announce my intention to run for the 12th Congressional District seat.

Earlier this month, Congressman Tom Lantos, who currently represents the 12th District, announced that he will not be seeking re-election at the end of his term this year. Congressman Lantos has served the district for more than 25 years, and I wish him, his wife, Annette, and their family the best. I know we will all be praying for them through this difficult time.

Now, while most of the country’s attention is focused on the Presidential primary races, it is also important that we start gearing up for this important race in the 12th District. I hope you’ll come hear the plans for my upcoming campaign and to meet friends, neighbors, and other supporters like you.

I will strive to make you proud and work hard to earn your support.

The deceptive “Edwards couldn’t win NC” argument

(cross-posted on DailyKos)

So one refrain I’ve seen bandied about in the last couple months has been that Edwards is a weak candidate because he couldn’t even win his home state of North Carolina in 2004.  Now, the primary rebuttal is that it was John Kerry’s campaign, not Edwards’.  But in looking at the numbers, I discovered something quite interesting.

Did you know that Bush got a higher percentage of the vote in 2004, when compared to 2000, in EVERY southern state… EXCEPT for North Carolina?  In fact, Bush improved his percentage of the vote in 47 of our 50 states, and even in D.C.  Yes, even in states that Bush lost by wide margins, he improved on his vote percentage in those states.  He barely got 35% of the vote in New York in 2000, but got over 40% of the vote there in 2004.  Think about that.  Hell, Bush even improved in Massachusetts, John Kerry’s home state.  Think about that.

The full numbers after the fold….

Here are my sources for the 2000 and 2004 data.  I’ve listed the percent of the vote Bush got in every single state (and D.C.) in 2000 and 2004, and the percent change going from 2000 to 2004 it represented.

Huzzah to Vermont and South Dakota for breaking the national trend.

While Gore received 43.2% of the vote in 2000 in North Carolina, Kerry got 43.6%.  Yeah, it’s not much of an increase, but considering that Bush improved in almost every other state in the country, it speaks volumes that North Carolina didn’t go the same way.

Think about this, folks.  In 48 states and D.C., Bush did better in 2004 than he did in 2000.  Think about that.  The ONLY states where that did not occur were South Dakota, Vermont, and North Carolina.  I’d have to say that that was because of John Edwards.  Notice that in Tennessee, without native Al Gore, their percent of the Bush vote jumped up from 51.1% to 56.8%.

And even with native John Kerry, Massachusetts gave Bush 36.8% of the vote in 2004, when they only gave him 32.5% in 2000.  How the hell could Bush improve by 4.3% in Kerry’s home state??  Given that, did you seriously expect John Edwards, as the Vice Presidential nominee, to FLIP North Carolina for the Democrats??  And look here in California: we gave Bush 41.7% of the vote in 2000, but gave him 44.4% of the vote in 2004, even as we re-elected Barbara Boxer in record numbers.  How did this happen?

When you see the chart like this, it’s amazing to think we picked off ANY state that went for Bush in 2000.  And the only one was New Hampshire.  Gore only got 46.8% of the vote there to Bush’s 48.1%, but Ralph Nader pulled in 3.9% of the vote.  In 2004, Kerry squeaked by with 50.2% of the vote.  But still, Bush got 48.9% of the vote that time around.  In Iowa, both parties did better in 2004 than they did in 2000 percentage-wise, but Bush still flipped that state red.

If you were wondering, I was over at MyDD, and read this comment, which spurred me to pull up the figures and crunch the numbers for this diary.

The California Healthcare Mess – Getting It Right Versus Getting It Done

(elected’s diaries always go to the front. plus this one is very pertinent to our ongoing discussion of the health care deal. – promoted by Julia Rosen)

The Governor and Assembly Speaker have emerged from negotiations with a healthcare plan that needs to be sent back for major reconstructive surgery.

The plan has some very good elements – such as preventing insurance companies from denying coverage for pre-existing conditions, a long-overdue expansion of children’s healthcare coverage and, potentially, the creation of the largest purchasing pool in the health insurance market outside of the federal government.

But the proposal has major flaws that must be fixed before it has a chance of final approval by California voters.

The first problem: there is not nearly enough cost control. Under the proposal, almost all Californians would have to buy health insurance – but there are not sufficient guarantees that the insurance polices are going to be affordable. There will be direct subsidies for families making up to 2.5 times the federal poverty level, or $51,625 for a family of four. There will be tax breaks and a buying pool for families making between 2.5 times the poverty level and four times the poverty level, which is $82,600 for a family of four. But here in San Francisco, and in most California cities, a family of four making $83,000 is hardly wealthy. To require these families to buy a product without sufficient guarantees that this product is affordable is not sound policy.

Another unacceptable risk: not enough protections against “dumping.” This plan needs real barriers to prevent big companies that hire low-wage workers (like WalMart) from merely pushing the healthcare burden onto taxpayers.

Yet another flaw: the plan is unclear about how it will provide sufficient coverage to undocumented workers. How can we even be talking about a “universal” plan that could leave out millions of people? The plan needs to create a way to cover everyone working in California regardless of immigration status – perhaps with more support for the county health systems that are now the healthcare providers of last resort.

It is certainly true that expanding the pool of people with health insurance will create savings. And making sure most Californians have preventative care is both a giant step forward and a significant cost control. But even these two important improvements are still not enough. We are still going to be burdened with a system that wastes billions of dollars on unnecessary overhead and bureaucracy.

And that’s the important and unanswered question with this proposal – does this plan get us closer to a sensible Single Payer system or does it take us farther away?

We are now implementing a universal healthcare system in San Francisco that achieves affordable and quality care largely by expanding our network of public hospitals and clinics. This care is affordable because the city itself acts in most cases as the “Single Payer.” We don’t waste up to 33% in insurance company overhead because there is no insurance company. And profits that would go to insurance companies can be invested in better care.

This kind of direct access to care and a Single Payer system is a model that will work in California and ultimately the rest of the nation.

I, for one, am not opposed to interim steps on our way to Single Payer. We all need to understand that building a workable Single Payer system will take time. But I want us to keep moving in the right direction. There is a compelling argument that the purchasing pool created under this proposal will be a first step toward Single Payer.

If correct, that’s a strong argument in favor of the plan. But I’m not convinced that this plan, as currently drafted, is moving us toward our ultimate goal of affordable and quality care for everyone.

2008: My Predictions

 Also Posted on Dailykos

The year 2007 has been a whirlwind for everyone at the RandySF household. The job is going well, the kid is growing like a weed and cuter than his dad ever was (I’m jealous) and life in San Francisco can’t be better than it is now. But it has passed and 2008 is just around the corner. So now, straight out of my head, my gut and my ass are my random political predictions of 2008 for the nation, California and San Francisco.

President:

The Democratic nominee will be elected president in 2008. I believe that, no matter who the nominees are, we will win all of the states John Kerry picked up plus Iowa, New Mexico, Nevada, Missouri, Ohio and Florida. Depending on who the nominees are, we stand a chance of also winning Colorado, Arizona, Arkansas, Virginia (thanks nrafter530) and Kentucky. Hillary Clinton will win the California Democratic primary. As for the Republicans, I would have predicted Giuliani, but I am backing off as I think Romney may eventually overtake him.

Senate:

We will pick up at least Virginia, New Mexico, New Hampshire, Colorado and Minnesota. If it is a very good year us, I might add Oregon, Maine, Kentucky and Alaska. The bad news is I do not think Mary Landrieu will hold her seat in Louisiana.  If Mitch McConnell gets a top tier challenger, this will be the top senate race of the year. Likely Net Gain: Four Seats.

House:

I have not had a chance to go through every district but I think we will net about 12-20 seats. Our new seats will include AZ-01, MI-07, NJ-03, NJ-07, MN-03, OH-15, NM-01, OH-16 and AL-AL. We will probably give back TX-22. The hottest race will be VA-11.

Governor:

We will pick up the Missouri and Indiana seats.

California:

The slowing economy and backslash against immigrant bashing will further poison the state for Republicans. Jerry McNerney will be reelected in CA-11 but we will not pick up CA-04 as Doolittle will not be on the ballot. All eyes in June will be on CA-12 as Jackie Speier challengers Tom Lantos in a race that will turn not so much on issues as the generational divide. Sometime in the year, probably after elections, Governor Schwarzenegger will announce his intention to run for the Senate against Barbara Boxer, or at least the formation of an exploratory committee.

San Francisco:

The City’s political scene will be consumed by a bitter, personal State Senate primary between State Senator Carole Migden and Assemblyman Mark Leno, with Leno coming out on top. Tom Ammiano will sail through the Assembly primary. Finally, Mayor Gavin Newsom’s stratospheric job approvals will come crashing down as his second term will come under greater scrutiny. A lack of progress on gang violence and growing attention to state politics will wear thin with voters. By the end of the year, there will be no more talk of Newsom for Governor.

So there you have it.

John Edwards and America Rising

We Will Right The Wrongs, Make Our Nation The Way We Want It To Be – That’s America Rising

As he opened an eight-day bus tour across the state this afternoon, there were reminiscent strains of his 2004 message in the air at the Polk County Convention Center as he presented his closing theme for this campaign: “America Rising.”

I wrote a Diary that was very important to me and heartfelt.  And this new 8 day bus tour only reinforces my assertion that John Edwards is going to do all he can to make the system work for everyone again, not just those who have the money and power to influence the process, but those who go to bed hungry, those who don’t dream of going to college because of money, those who worry about how they will pay their next mortgage payment and those who are doing well today but could find themselves financially ruined because of a catastrophic illness or accident.

This campaign is more about America than it is about John Edwards and it’s more about lifting up those who have been held down for far too long.  I sincerely believe that Edwards has seen how the power of the Government has been abused by the few at the cost of the many.

John Edwards needs every single voter to rise to the occasion and make a choice.  We need to stand up and be heard, as Edwards in the past has so eloquently said, “I think our voices together are more powerful than our voices alone.”  That too is America Rising.

America Rising

December 10, 2007

Excerpts From prepared remarks

“I grew up in a family where my grandmother walked to work at the mill every day wearing her apron. My grandfather, who was partially paralyzed, hauled rolls of cloth using one arm. My dad worked in those mills for 36 years, my mom worked too – all of them for one reason – to give us a chance to rise up and have a better life.

“That’s the greatness of America – the promise that every generation will give its children the chance to rise higher, dream bigger, live greater. I took the chances my parents gave me and spent my life fighting to make sure that people just like the people I grew up with had a real chance in the world. When indifferent, irresponsible corporations knocked them down, I was there to help them rise up.

“And that’s what drives me now. When I talk about the Two Americas, this is what I mean – the very wealthiest and most powerful have manipulated our government for their own ends. They use their wealth and their power to keep themselves wealthy and powerful at the expense of everyone else. And when they do that, they’re holding America back.

“But that’s about to change. You can feel it here in Iowa. Because America can’t be held back. Because America belongs to us.

“When we face obstacles, you know what we do? We get up. We rise up. We right wrongs and we make our nation the way we want it to be. That’s what’s happening in this election. That’s what’s happening here in Iowa. America is rising.

“When we lift 37 million Americans out of poverty – that’s America Rising. When we guarantee universal health care for every man, woman, and child in America – that’s America Rising. When we stop reckless trade deals that send American jobs overseas and create great jobs here – that’s America Rising. When we can look James Lowe in the eye and say with conviction, what you lived through will never happen again in our America – that’s America Rising.”

JohnEdwards.com

Toward the end, he said: “Are we going to be looking for careful political calculation, or are we going to be looking for bold, strong leadership for the United States?”

That’s a very important question, what are we looking for? I’m looking for someone who is not afraid to take a stand, who is not afraid to say “I was wrong” and who is not afraid to ask the tough questions.

And for those who have counted Edwards out, I have this for you:

As candidates prepare to chart their last movements across Iowa – selecting the itineraries for their bus tours, crafting the message of their final arguments – Mr. Edwards has an institutional memory that other candidates must rely on their strategists to provide. Yes, there are as many differences as similarities between the race of 2004 and 2008, but the ingrained experiences for Mr. Edwards should not be overlooked.

“You’ve got to believe there’s going to be some movement,” Mr. Edwards said, recalling his “dramatic rise” at this point in the campaign four years ago. Asked how that experience helps, he added: “I know these people. I know what they care about.”

“Rigged” features John Edwards speaking directly to New Hampshire voters about how the system in Washington is corrupt and rigged against hardworking Americans on behalf of the moneyed corporate interests.

John Edwards’ latest television ad airing in New Hampshire:

“We don’t have universal health care because of drug companies, insurance companies, and their lobbyists in Washington, D.C.”

This is my reason for standing up, Charlotte, a happy, healthy little girl who has so much ahead of her.  She doesn’t have a care in the world, this was her this Saturday at the Southern California GCN Christmas Party.  What’s that?  It’s the Gay Christian Network and I’m a proud Christian Ally for the gay, lesbian and transgender community, I want to stand up for those who don’t have many of the legal rights that many take for granted.  Why bring my daughter?  Because I want her to know many different people and understand the blessing it is to have a varied community.  I guess you could say they are part of my village.  So I’m rising for Charlotte, I want her to have all the opportunities that I’ve had and more.

By the way, that’s her with a bit of table decor in her mouth, she’s by far the silliest person I know.  Why do I share this?  Because this is a personal choice and we all have our own reasons, I want people know that my personal choice has to do with this person in my life.

Edwards: the Lesson of Iraq and a New Strategy for Iran

Long before it was “popular”, John Edwards was calling for a New Strategy for Iran (and the War on Terror in general)

Long before the NIE Report, threw water on the GOP’s fiery rhetoric about the looming dangers of Iran, Edwards was saying we must learn the lessons of the Iraq War — NOT Repeat them in Iran!

Long before the cynical Rumsfeld Memos were leaked (proving Edwards right), John Edwards was busy “reframing” the Global War on Terror, calling it “a ‘bumper sticker’ slogan Bush had used to justify everything …”

Did Edwards get Media Attention and fanfare for his insightful and stateman-like leadership — NO, but he DID help to change the national conversation!

So Much so, that insiders in NIE (National Intelligence Estimate), seem to have taken his advice that: “We’ve got to stand up to Bush and Cheney and the Neocons …”

Even though Bush knew of the NIE Report Conclusions, as early as August this year:

At a press briefing this morning, President Bush said he was told by his Director of National Intelligence Mike McConnell “in August” that “we have some new information” regarding Iran’s nuclear program.

In spite of knowing there was No imminent threat of Nukes from Iran, Bush continued to trump up the neocon agenda, of looking under chairs and in closets for the next generation of WMD’s (Weapons of Mass Delusion)!

Indeed as recently as mid Oct, Bush was raising the spectre of World War III:

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – U.S. President George W. Bush warned on Wednesday a nuclear-armed Iran could lead to World War III as he tried to shore up international opposition to Tehran amid Russian skepticism over its nuclear ambitions.

More “bumper sticker” sloganeering — no doubt! Thanks goodness for the voices of reason and sanity within the NIE, for deciding to go public, with there previously internal Report. True Patriots, I’d say, inside government, taking a stand against — more Neocon manipulation of the American People! Bravo!

So what were the Conclusions of the sea-change Report from the National Intelligence Estimate (NIE)?

November 2007

National Intelligence Estimates (NIE)

Iran: Nuclear Intentions and Capabilities

Key Judgments

We judge with high confidence that in fall 2003, Tehran halted its nuclear weapons program.

– We judge with high confidence that the halt lasted at least several years.

– We assess with moderate confidence Tehran had not restarted its nuclear weapons program as of mid-2007, but we do not know whether it currently intends to develop nuclear weapons.

– We continue to assess with moderate-to-high confidence that Iran does not currently have a nuclear weapon.

– Tehran’s decision to halt its nuclear weapons program suggests it is less determined to develop nuclear weapons than we have been judging since 2005. Our assessment that the program probably was halted primarily in response to international pressure suggests Iran may be more vulnerable to influence on the issue than we judged previously.

We judge with moderate confidence that the earliest possible date Iran would be technically capable of producing enough HEU for a weapon is late 2009, but that this is very unlikely.

– We judge with moderate confidence Iran probably would be technically capable of producing enough HEU for a weapon sometime during the 2010-2015 time frame. (INR judges Iran is unlikely to achieve this capability before 2013 because of foreseeable technical and programmatic problems.)

All agencies recognize the possibility that this capability may not be attained until after 2015.

NIE Report May Block Military Force Against Iran

by Mike Shuster

Morning Edition, December 5, 2007 – The emergence of the new National Intelligence Estimate on Iran is presenting a major challenge to the policies of the Bush administration.

The report’s primary conclusion – that Iran halted a secret nuclear weapons program four years ago – appears to raise barriers to the use of military force against Iran and raise questions about whether economic sanctions are even justified.

President Defends Iran Policy

As justification for continuing his Iran policy, the president cited the NIE’s judgment that Iran chose to shut down its covert nuclear program in 2003 because of international pressure. The president said he wants that pressure to continue.

But in 2003, there were no economic sanctions against Iran. The U.S. refused to engage with Iran and dismissed the European decision to negotiate as fruitless.

Recently, the administration has been talking about even tougher sanctions, all the while suggesting the possibility of military attack.

But the first casualty of the NIE’s conclusions appears to be the military option. Many experts think it is impossible now. Bruce Riedel, who spent 30 years in the CIA, is among them. Riedel is a scholar with the Saban Center for Middle East Policy at the Brookings Institution.

“There is no possible way that the United States could now use unilateral military force in the wake of this estimate. I don’t think the political calculus in this country or that of our allies abroad would tolerate it,” he said.

Interesting. And indeed hopeful. Maybe the world can begin to recover from the disastrous policy of endless preemptive war! Maybe America CAN return to our core values, that most of us believe, in afterall? Let hope so.

John Edwards has been calling for ENDING the policies of preemptive war and the application of “smart power”, as early as May of this year, and recently as November, in a Major Speech CNN’s Wolf Blitzer called “important”:

John Edwards: Situation Room-Nov 2007

Here’s are some of the key points of this important Edwards Foreign Policy speech. Funny how today’s current events, are once again proving, “John Edwards IS Right, again!”

Learning the Lesson of Iraq: A New Strategy for Iran

Nov 5, 2007

University of Iowa, Iowa City, Iowa

John Edwards:

This is a critical moment. As a nation, we stand today at a fork in the road with Iran. We have a real choice about the direction we’ll take. One path will replay the last seven years. It leads toward a dark future of belligerence, aggression, and war.

We need a new direction — one that will defuse the Iran threat, rather than aggravate it, one that will make America safer, not make the world more dangerous.

To understand exactly what the administration is trying to do with Iran, we need to go back to the beginning of the Bush Administration and look at how they took us to war with Iraq.

In the spring of 2002, the nation was struggling to recover from the devastating terrorist attacks of 9/11. At the same time, a group of Bush Administration neoconservatives, like Dick Cheney and Paul Wolfowitz, were strategizing for ways to start a war with Iraq. And suddenly, instead of reacting to 9/11 by working to protect America from terrorists, they saw a political opportunity to promote their right-wing ideological agenda and demonize anyone who disagreed with them.

Here’s what you have to know about these neoconsthey think might makes right, every time. They believe in domination, not debate. They think America should use our military power to impose our will wherever and whenever we want. They use a sledgehammer when we should use a scalpel.

And here’s what you need to know about George Bush’s foreign policyit’s written by these neocons, lock, stock, and barrel.

So after 9/11, instead of focusing on the terrorist threat, George Bush started promoting a radical new neoconservative doctrine he called, quote, “preventive war” — which would soon become part of his argument for war in Iraq.

Here’s what they mean by preventive war — if we see a possible threat, we go to war; we don’t exhaust diplomatic, political, and economic options, we go straight to war. Under this Bush doctrine, military force is no longer the option of last resort.

Harry Truman once said, “There is nothing more foolish than to think that war can be stopped by war. You don’t ‘prevent’ anything other than peace.”

That’s exactly right. Think about it — you don’t prevent wars by starting them. It would be ridiculous if it weren’t so dangerous.

This George Bush policy instead is, almost literally, “shoot first, ask questions later.”

So let me be clear.

We should take Iran very seriously. And as commander-in-chief, if I ever learn that any nation is threatening an imminent attack, I will do what’s necessary to protect America.

But the one thing we absolutely should not be doing is launching another so-called “preventive war” with Iran. American and the world possess a powerful arsenal of diplomatic and economic options that have not yet been used, let alone exhausted.

We need, in short, a new strategy for Iran. My plan for Iran has five principles.

(1) End the doctrine of preventive war

First and foremost, we need to ensure that the preventive war doctrine goes where it belongs — the trash-heap of history. As he has done with so much else, Vice President Al Gore got it right about the preventive war doctrine.

(2) Use smart sanctions against Iran

The second principle is to use bolder and more targeted economic sanctions to force Iran’s leaders to understand that they cannot continue to buck the will of the international community without destroying their ability to be the modern, advanced nation they so desperately want to become.

There are smart sanctions that will achieve results, and there are reckless sanctions that will backfire and play into a policy of military attacks. The Bush-Cheney sanctions Senator Clinton supports are the most radical, unprecedented, and belligerent sanctions possible. These reckless sanctions will escalate tensions between the U.S. and Iran — the thing Bush and Cheney most want — and have other unintended consequences, such as higher oil prices.

(3) Offer carrot of possibility to re-join the world community

The third principle of my plan is to use “carrots” — diplomatic measures to convince Iran to abandon its nuclear ambitions and re-join the world community. We should draw Iran into compliance through incentives including increased refinery capacity and a regional fuel bank that Iran could use for peaceful purposes.

And we need to use the possibility of bringing Iran into multilateral economic organizations, including the WTO, as a carrot for change.

(4) Open Diplomatic Communication with Iran

The fourth principle of my policy is to reengage with Iran.

Even Republicans like Senator Hagel are now urging the president to open up communications with Iran. Communication is not a concession. After all, we talked to our great enemy, the Soviet Union, at the height of tensions during the Cold War.

But we must always negotiate from a position of strength.

(5) Get other Nations to apply pressure

And the fifth and final principle is to reengage with other major nations on the challenge of Iran.

We must work with China and Russia on the problem of Iran’s nuclear ambitions. Both nations have economic relationships with Iran on trade and energy. But both nations also have a strong interest in stability in the Middle East. And neither nation wants the nuclear club to expand. In the first year of my administration, I will convene a conference with my Secretary of State and representatives from the “E.U. 3” — Great Britain, France, and Germany — Russia, China and Iran, to discuss a way out of the stalemate of the Bush Administration.

The strategy I’ve described to you today is the right way to keep America strong while keeping the peace.

It is the right way to force Iran to forgo its nuclear ambitions.

And it is the right way to restore America’s historic role as a leader of the world community — through a combination of strength, vision, and reengagement with the world.

America needs a president who can guide America through a dangerous world, with the wisdom of history by our side.

America has gone through similar challenges before.

Edwards’ smart, targeted, and visionary Foreign Policy are among the many reasons, he has my support, in his bid for President.

This new NIE Report should cause a few changes a few Cover Stories, both in the Administration and among some Presidential Hopefuls. The GOP Hopefuls were intending to run against the Bogey Man in Iran, against those “new” WMD — Weapons of Mass Delusion. And senator Clinton was planning on running by looking as tough as the GOP on Iran and Iraq, thus her support of the Kyle-Lieberman Vote.

NOW what will they do and say in light of the NIE Report? Anything?

Will any of them admit mistakes?

Will any of them take a more Humanitarian perspective, on Global problems as Edwards has long advocated for?

Or will Candidates do what they always do — and act like “Status Quo” Bureaucrats — ignoring the relevant Facts, and just continue with “Business as Usual”! … Pssst: Iran is NOT the “clear and present danger” you all were making it out to be!

We need to give 3rd world countries Hope — NOT Hate. America needs to pull the world’s citizens to our side of the fence — and NOT push them to the other side of the fence!

We need a Statesman like John Edwards, restoring the Moral Authority of America again, and not squandering it away with more preemptive misguided military intrusions!

Until America uses our power smartly, and stops all the bullying on the block, we will never be able to lead on other critical Global Issues like Global Warming, and Aids, and Tribal Conflicts, and poverty, and Hunger, and Thirst.

As a Country we ARE Better than what the World has seen latelyit’s high time we showed them, what most Americans are really about.

But that will take real progressive Leadership, who has those goals as the core of his agenda. IMO, that will take John Edwards at the helm.

Harry Belafonte endorses John Edwards!

I think there may be some dispute between supporters of different candidates about who has the coolest celebrity endorsement, but for my money, the best one so far this campaign season is the endorsement of John Edwards today by Harry Belafonte.

Belafonte, who became famous in the 1950s by popularizing Calypso music from the Caribbean, has been a long time human rights activist. Among other things, he worked with the Reverend Martin Luther King Jr. during the civil rights movement in the 1960s. He hasn’t stopped working for the betterment of humanity since.

The Life of Harry Belafonte

Belafonte with Sidney Poitier and Charlton Heston at the 1963 Civil Rights March on Washington

From wikipedia:

Like Robeson and other African-American entertainers, Belafonte’s success in the arts did not protect him from racial discrimination, particularly in the South of the United States. As a result, he refused to perform in the South of the U.S. from 1954 until 1961. In 1960, President John F. Kennedy named Belafonte as cultural advisor to the Peace Corps. Belafonte was an early supporter of the Civil Rights Movement in the 1950s and one of Martin Luther King’s confidants. He provided for King’s family, since King made only $8,000 a year as a preacher. Like many civil rights activists, he was blacklisted during the McCarthy era. He bailed King out of the Birmingham City Jail and raised thousands of dollars to release other imprisoned civil rights protesters. He financed the Freedom Rides, supported voter registration drives, and helped to organize the March on Washington in 1963.

In 1968, Belafonte appeared on a Petula Clark primetime television special on NBC. In the middle of a song, Clark smiled and briefly touched Belafonte’s arm, which made the show’s sponsor, Plymouth Motors, nervous. Plymouth wanted to cut out the segment, but Clark, who had ownership of the special, told NBC that the performance would be shown intact or she would not allow the special to be aired at all. American newspapers published articles reporting the controversy and, when the special aired, it grabbed high viewing figures. Clark’s gesture marked the first time in which two people of different races made friendly bodily contact on U.S. television.

And there’s a lot more…

In 1987, he received an appointment to UNICEF as a goodwill ambassador. Following his appointment, Belafonte travelled to Dakar, Senegal, where he served as chairman of the International Symposium of Artists and Intellectuals for African Children. He also helped to raise funds, alongside more than 20 other artists, in the largest concert ever held in sub-Saharan Africa. In 1994 he went on a mission to Rwanda, and launched a media campaign to raise awareness of the needs of Rwandan children. In 2001 he went to South Africa to support the campaign against HIV/AIDS. In 2002, Africare awarded him the Bishop John T. Walker Distinguished Humanitarian Service Award for his efforts to assist Africa. In 2004 Belafonte went to Kenya to stress the importance of educating children in the region.

I’ve been a fan of Belafonte for many years, ever since my mother introduced me to his music when I was probably in junior high school. One year, my sisters and I asked her what she wanted for Christmas, and she told us she wanted a copy of Harry Belafonte’s hit record from the 1950s, “Calypso.” That was the first time I ever heard of him, and this great album quickly became one of my favorites. I got to see him in concert probably least about 20 years ago now, and it was a wonderful concert!

Since I am a fan of Harry Belafonte, I want to share with you a couple of entertaining videos of him that I found on YouTube. I hope you will enjoy these!

Belafonte’s endorsement of John Edwards today

Here’s what Harry Belafonte had to say about John Edwards when he endorsed him today in South Carolina. (Article and Video here.)

Belafonte is a likable, friendly man: one genuinely concerned with people and the state of this country. He says John Edwards is the only candidate also concerned and compassionate enough to try and deal with it.

“I’ve looked at his platform on education, healthcare, poverty, what young people are going through and I have come to believe he’s the best candidate,” Belafonte said.

He says all the other candidates talk about the plight of the middle class, While only Edwards talks about the poor.

“I also happen to believe that had he not so forcefully and precisely put the issue of poverty into this campaign, I don’t think we’d be talking aobut it as much as we are,” Belafonte said.

Belafonte feels Edwards was sincere when he announced his candidacy in New Orleans, saying it showed a commitment to the people devastated by hurricane Katrina.

“I’ve talked with John Edwards. I’ve looked into heart and his soul,” Belafonte says.

He added that Edwards has the makings of a great president. Belafonte attended a rally with Edwards at the College of Charleston.

Thank you to this great humanitarian, Harry Belafonte, for recognizing and supporting the promise of another great humanitarian, John Edwards.

The Edwards Tax Plan: Reward Work — Not Wealth

The old saying goes:

“The only things Inevitable in Life, are Death and Taxes!”

These are both unpleasant subjects, and since political candidates can’t really do a lot about one, this diary will be exploring the other — Taxes.

John Edwards has based his campaign on hard hitting messages about the need for “Economic Parity” in our Country — this Diary will be taking a serious look at what Edwards will do about Taxes.

The Senator often says “I do not wanting to live in a Country made up of the Super-Rich and Everybody Else!”

That’s not the America we all grew up in. Each year achieving the American Dream becomes more and more difficult. What are working people to do, in this society of Haves and Have-Nots?

Is John’s tough Campaign Rhetoric just Talk, or does he actually have the Plans to Back it up?

Turn the page, to see where the “Rhetoric meet Reality” when it comes to that annual April Ritual, most hard-working American love to hate — spelled I.R.S.

Solutions like UHC and stopping Global Warming will take Money — where’s ALL that money going to come from?

Here’s where regular Working Americans start getting some Respect again in our Economic System (as expressed in an incomprehensible Tax Code), which all too often favors only those Wealthy enough to “work the system”:

John Edwards’ Tax Reform to Reward Work [from pdf1]

The Goals:

“Our tax code has shifted most of the burden onto the backs of working Americans. There is simply no end to the special tax breaks available to big corporations and wealthy individuals who can afford lawyers and lobbyists.

“It’s time to end the President’s war on work. And it’s time to restore fairness to a tax code that has been driven badly out of whack.”

– Remarks on “Restoring Economic Fairness,” July 26, 2007

The Summary

John Edwards will rewrite our tax code to make it simpler and fairer and to help hard-working families succeed. Millions of working and middle-class families will keep more of their paychecks. Those at the very top will again pay their fair share.

The Edwards Tax Reform Plan — Policy Points

(1) New tax breaks to Strengthen the Middle Class

The Goals:

“It’s time for us to put our economy back in line with our values and strengthen three pillars of America’s middle class: savings, work and family.”

The Steps: to Strengthen the Middle Class

 (A) Encourage Savings

   (a) Establish a new Get Ahead tax credit to match up to $500 a year in retirement savings for families earning up to $75,000.

   (b) Create new Work Bonds to offer extra savings incentives for low-income workers.

 (B) Reward Work

   (a) Expand the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) to reward low-wage workers by tripling the EITC for single adults and cutting the marriage penalty.

[ some key details from pdf-2: ]

– Edwards will expand the Child and Dependent Care Tax Credit to pay up to 50 percent of childcare expenses up to $5,000 and make it partially refundable to benefit low-income working families. He will also allow stay-at-home parents to get the credit to help pay for child care for newborn infants.

– Triple the EITC for 4 Million Adults without Children: A single worker at the poverty line pays more than $800 in federal income and payroll taxes. Edwards will offer more than $1,200 to poor single workers, tripling the current EITC, and it will give 4 million low-income workers an average tax cut of $750.

– Edwards believes that we must cut the EITC marriage penalty. His proposal will cut taxes for 3 million couples by about $400 a year.

 (C) Support Families

   (a) More than double the Child and Dependent Care Credit to up to $2,500 per child.

(2) Reward work, not just wealth, and Repeal the Bush tax breaks for the Wealthy

The Goals:

“It’s time to stop promoting the wealth of the wealthy and start making sure that everyone has the chance to move up the economic ladder.”

The Steps: to Repeal the Bush tax breaks

 (A) Restore Fair Taxation of Wealth

   (a) Restore the investment income tax rate to 28 percent for Americans making more than $250,000 a year so that wealthy investors don’t pay a lower rate on investments than many regular Americans pay on wages.

[ some key details from pdf-2: ]

To ensure that the wealthiest Americans are paying their fair share of taxes and to reduce the economic distortions from tax shelters resulting from large capital gains preferences, Edwards will raise the top tax rate on long-term capital gains to 28 percent for the most fortunate taxpayers, the same rate signed into law by President Reagan. The 28 percent rate will ensure that high-income investors will pay taxes on their investment income at a similar rate to what regular families pay on their earned income.

   (b) Repeal the Bush tax cuts for households earning more than $200,000 a year.

[ some key details from pdf-2: ]

More than half of the Bush tax cuts – $132 billion – will go to the top 1 percent of taxpayers in 2010. Edwards will repeal the Bush tax cuts for the highest-income households. He will also eliminate estate taxes for the middle class, small business owners and family farmers, while keeping these taxes on the few families with large estates above $4 million in value.

   (c) Keep the tax on very largest inheritances while protecting family businesses and family farms.

 (B) Simplify Taxes

   (a) Simplify taxes for up to 50 million families by giving them the option of letting the IRS complete a first draft of their forms for “five-minute filing.”

(3) Shut down special Loopholes for insiders

The Goals:

[ some key details from pdf-2: ]

Declare War on Tax Havens: About $300 billion a year in taxes go unpaid, and about $1.5 trillion in personal assets of U.S. taxpayers are held offshore. These unpaid taxes increase the share of the tax burden shouldered by honest taxpayers. Edwards will end the abuse of foreign tax havens: low-tax countries that facilitate American corporations and wealthy individuals seeking to avoid U.S. taxes.

Close the Hedge Fund and Private Equity Loopholes: Some of the most highly paid people in America are the managers of hedge funds and private equity funds, some of whom make hundreds of millions of dollars or even billions a year. Although most of their income, like other earned income, is nothing more than payment for the work they do, they pay only the 15 percent capital gains rate rather than the ordinary income tax rate. Edwards will close this loophole and also ensure that publicly traded private equity and hedge funds pay corporate taxes.

Cap Executive Pensions: Top executives at large corporations commonly receive deferred compensation packages that allow them to put off indefinitely the payment of taxes on much of their compensation. They have in effect unlimited IRAs or 401(k)s, without the limits that apply to other workers. Edwards will limit the amount of money that can be put into these funds to $1 million a year.

The Steps: to Shut down special Loopholes

 (A) Declare War on Offshore Tax Havens

   (a) Edwards will fight offshore tax havens by working with other nations to fight tax evasion, crack down on tax shelter promoters and eliminate special tax breaks for corporations’ offshore investments.

[ some key details from pdf-2: ]

– Extend the time the I.R.S. has to investigate offshore tax havens

 (B) Close the Tax Gap

   (a) Edwards will collect a greater share of the $300 billion in uncollected taxes every year through better IRS service, targeting audits at wealthy individuals and corporations likely to have committed evasion, and requiring more third-party reporting.

 (C) Close Hedge Fund and Private Equity Loopholes

   (a) Edwards will close the loophole that elite Wall Street traders use to pay only 15 percent in taxes on their huge incomes, while regular families often pay twice that amount.

Impressive goals and steps!  How does the Plan stack up?

Edwards Tax Plan:  Reward Work Not Wealth

The Reviews:  [ from pdf1: ]

“Former North Carolina senator John Edwards has a tax plan that is… smarter, targeted at taxpayers who need the most help and at creating incentives for savings.”

– Washington Post editorial

“Edwards, at least, is willing to say which taxes he would raise to keep the deficit from going through the roof…. Edwards deserves points for honesty. …”

– E.J. Dionne, Washington Post columnist

“We need a president and a tax system that will grow the middle class, not the gap between the haves and have-nots. John Edwards has a fair tax plan that will help middle-class families and promote healthy economic growth.”

– Betty Yee, Chairwoman, California State Board of Equalization

Sound like these Reforms would indeed go a long ways to achieving Economic Fairness in the Country again — a tax system that will grow the middle class — now that really would be something!

If we stay with the “status quo” and continue with “Business as Usual” —

America could indeed become like the gated city on the hill,

made up of the “super rich” who “run everything” —

(the top 1%)

and “everybody else” —

who just get “run over”!

It’s time to take down that Wall of a Tax Code too!

It’s time to Reward Work — instead of just Wealth!

It’s time to support John Edwards!
