Wherein I Praise Susan Davis AND Ellen Tauscher

They’re not two of my favorite California Congresswoman.  But their leadership on repealing don’t ask don’t tell comes to a head with a hearing today, chaired by Davis.

Democrats in Congress hope to ignite a drive to reverse the military’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy Wednesday with the first hearing on the subject since 1993, when President Clinton said gays could serve in uniform if they kept quiet about their sexual orientation.

Without this hearing, said former Joint Chiefs of Staff chairman John Shalikashvili, “you will never repeal the law. It’s a great idea.” He is among more than 50 retired generals and admirals who have said it is time to rethink the policy […]

Democrats on the House Armed Services Committee tried to have a hearing on the policy in April 2007, but opposition from conservatives in their party sank the idea.

Since then, “There’s another year in the war,” says Rep. Susan Davis, a California Democrat who chairs the military personnel subcommittee. “We want to start a conversation” that could put the issue on a front burner again.

Democratic Rep. Ellen Tauscher of California, the lead sponsor of a bill to repeal the policy, said she knows what military leaders would say if they testified.

“The military leadership will tell you that this is the law they’ve been given to operate under and that’s what they do,” she says, “which is a very different question of off-line and off-the-record, ‘Personally, admiral, what do you think?’ That’s the only way they could answer … differently.”

The Pentagon may be ducking this hearing, but they can’t hide from public opinion.  Over 75 percent of Americans would like to see DADT repealed.  The arguments about “unit cohesion” have been shown to be ridiculous, and the case of Arabic translators being fired for being gay have highlighted not only the absurdity of this policy, but the national security harm it’s actually doing.

The most fitting part of all of this is that Larry Craig supports Don’t Ask Don’t Tell.  Yeah, he would, wouldn’t he?  I’m sure he’d love to change the title to “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, Just Tap Three Times,” but then…

UPDATE: Rep. Patrick Murphy (from my hometown) had a great hearing.  He kicked a little butt today.  Video on the flip:

Republican Obsessions: God, Guns & Gays…Kinda Makes You Wonder

Xposted from mydesert.com, the online edition of The Desert Sun

My, my, my.  To hear the recent rightwing debate on CNN, you would think that God, Guns, and Gays were the most pressing issues facing the United States of America.  No, not Iraq, not the faltering economy, not the banking industry, not Iran, not the failing regime in Pakistan, not AIDS and low quality healthcare, not the despoiled environment, not the under-funded schools.  No, it’s the godless liberals, the ones threatening to disarm NRA-loving Americans and to inculcate America with the ‘Gay Agenda.’

You have to wonder why the ongoing obsessions in the theofascist Repugnant party.  Traditionally, groups create external enemies in order to unify the group in question.  Gays are examples of the ongoing attempts of the Repugnant Party to create external villains in order to coalesce the followers of their cult (remember their previous focus on the insidious Soviet Union, then Russia, then Iraq, then North Korea, then Iran, etc?).  Of course you also have to wonder in the case of the right wing party about their seemingly constant obsession with gays.  Freud would have a field day.  Repressed sexuality.  Displaced anxiety.  Denial.  Unresolved sexual conflicts.

This we see when any right wing ideologue is revealed to have been a closeted self-loathing homophobic gay himself/herself.  Reference the former-Rev. Ted Haggard, former-Rep. Mark Foley (R-FL), former-Rep. Jim Kolbe (R-AZ), Rep. David Dreier (R-CA), Sen. Larry Craig (R-ID), former-mayor of Spokane Jim West (R), former-State Senator and cross-dresser, Richard Curtis (R-WA), Gov. Charlie Crist (R-FL), Ken Mehlman (former RNC chairman), Jeff Gannon (formerly of the Washington Press Corps and credentialed by Whitehouse Press Secretary), Sen. Trent Lott (R-MS), Ralph Reed (founder of the so-called Christian Coalition), and so many more. (refer to www.blogactive.com).

Then, of course in an altogether different category, you have the Green Bay, WI/Brown County Republican Chairman Donald Fleischman who opted for pedophilia as an expression of his repressed sexual urges.  While the right wing might characteriz Fleischman’s crime as ‘gay,’ we know that this is an abuse of power rather than an expression of sexuality.  In this category, I would also include the pedophilia-prone clergy and priests who commit rightwing principles.

And of course, guns have always been a symbol of the phallus.  Makes one wonder though about the relationship in the theofascist mind of God, guns, and gays.  JMHO.

Sen. Larry Craig (R-ID) Makes News in Palm Springs, CA

Well, well, well.  It seems that the breaking story about the latest Repugnant sex scandal occurred in Palm Springs, CA recently.  The male escort whose assertions re Ted Haggard, former leader of the National Association of Evangelicals, lead to Haggard’s resignation and to James Dobson’s de-gayification boot camp, now asserted on a Palm Springs radio station that Sen. “Toe-Tapping” Larry Craig (R-ID) also sought his services.

Haggard resigned from the mega-church that he had founded and as the leader of the National Association of Evangelicals in November 2006, after Mike Jones of Denver made allegations that Meth- and Escort-Loving Haggard paid him for sex and used methamphetamine with him.

Jones appeared on the Bulldog Bill Feingold Show broadcast on KNWQ-AM on Wednesday night, October 3, 2007, according to NBC’s www.9News.com (see NBC 9News.com.  Jones was appearing during his book tour, and, during a commercial break, reported that Toe-Tapping Larry Craig scheduled a toe-to-toe…er…head-to-head…er…face-to-face (I give up) session with him in Denver in 2005.

More below the toe-tapping flip…

Craig is the Repugnant homophobic and apparently self-loathing U.S. Senator from Idaho who plead guilty to misdemeanor disorderly conduct charges earlier this year in MN after his arrest in a Minneapolis airport bathroom for propositioning an undercover police.  And this week, Toe-Tapping Larry renegged on his promise to resign from the U.S. Senate if his appeal was denied and reported that he will serve out his term.  You just cannot make this stuff up!

Fortunately for the late night entertainment shows and for progressive bloggers everywhere, a news photographer from the ABC-affiliate KESQ-TV in Palm Springs, kept filming as Jones discussed his meeting with Craig.

Feingold asked Jones if Toe-tapping Larry met him at a hotel, and Jones responded, “No, he came to see me.”  No comment from this writer, as that was hysterical.  I wonder if the pun was intended.

Jones did not indicate whether or not he had had sexual contact with Toe-Tapping Larry.

Reportedly, Toe-Tapping Larry’s office told KESQ-TV that “Mike Jones’ allegations are completely false.”  It was not substantiated whether the Senator’s office had said that he “Was not gay, and never had been gay” though.

CA-26: Larry Craig Scandal Threatens David Dreier

The Larry Craig scandal is resonating with voters at an astonishing level. IOKIYAR works in all but one situation and the question everyone is asking:  Is David Dreier next?

What we do know is that Mike Rodgers has targeted David Dreier for years and is raising money to do what Mike does best. We also know this has a proven ability to move in the local media. Taken together, I’d say there’s a good chance the DCCC is monitoring closely any talk involving the congressman’s name and the word ‘gay’.
