ALP is Alive!

The American Leadership Project, a California based 527 lead by a pair of folks the CA-blogosphere knows something about, Roger Salazar and Jason Kinney, is alive again.  It had been quiet after posting after some half-hearted attempts at media buys in Ohio and Indiana.

Well, they birthed 2 new ads, one for Montana and one for Puerto Rico. Not sure on the ad buy for these, but for context, in Ohio they had some ads up on YouTube for weeks and only got them on the air for the last couple days. (h/t TPM)

The real question here is whether these military contractors think they’re contributing to the same Duncan Hunter or not.

Records show connections between companies Rep. Hunter has worked with and some individuals who are contributing to his son’s campaign.

Rep. Hunter added language to the 2008 Defense Appropriations bill awarding $19 million to L-3 Communications, which has an office in San Diego, for the development and testing of a missile system, according to data compiled by Taxpayers for Common Sense. Executives from that company contributed $2,750 to Duncan D. Hunter’s campaign.

Rep. Hunter also earmarked San Diego-based Trex Enterprises Corp. $1.5 million for the development of a device that will help helicopter pilots navigate with limited visibility. Campaign finance records show Trex employees, including a scientist, donated $4,800 to Duncan D. Hunter’s campaign.

Lobbyists working for the companies have also supported Hunter’s campaign. Patrick McSwain and Frank Collins, who were listed as principals at the lobbying firm Northpoint Strategies, collectively donated $2,500. Northpoint worked on behalf of L-3. McSwain and Collins were both former [Rep. Duke] Cunningham chiefs of staff.

You know, why wouldn’t they?  Hunter was a reliable champion for whatever boondoggle weapons system these contractors thought up, even planes that can’t fly.  There’s no reason to believe that his son won’t act the same way.

Open Thread and Assorted Links

It’s time for some random links and a good ole fashioned open thread.

  • Rather than having a blog, Capitol Weekly decided to post an email thread between the beloved around these parts Steve Maviglio and his counterpart in the SenateAssembly Morgan Crinklaw.  Steve naturally starts his first response by paraphrasing an old SNL skits and calls Morgan an “ignorant slut”. (Note: Morgan’s employer corrected)
  • Another gay victory from the CA Supremes.  No longer can doctors refuse to treat us because we are gay and their religion does not approve.
  • Paid sick leave for all! Ok, it has only passed the Assembly, but it is cause to celebrate.
  • McClintock decided to be a whiney brat and refused to show up to the last debate with Doug Ose.  About 180 well paying guests didn’t get the smackdown show they had paid good money to attend.  McClintock’s excuse was that the also rans were not invited, that and he is sulking about Ose’s attack ads.
  • The AFT just informed the Mt. Shasta Brewing Co., based in Weed, CA that they can no longer use bottle caps that read “Try Legal Weed”.  Evidently, alluding to marijuana on beer is not allowed.  The town is named after a dude named Abner Weed and has nothing to do with pot.

That’s all I got.  Any FP’ers who feel inspired, go ahead and add to this thread.

The Black Key’s new album rocks.  Here is “Strange Times”

Parties for “Party A” and “Party B”

The California wedding industry is about to see a major influx of dollars.  Starting June 17, “Party A” and “Party B” will fill out the new forms from the state Office of Vital Records.  This is of course leads to another party, a wedding reception.  Companies are already starting to gear up their advertising, hoping to get a healthy share of all of that cash.  Macy’s put a huge ad in the LAT.  WashBlade has the image:

The Los Angeles Times ran a Macy’s ad today showing two mingling wedding rings with the following message: “First comes love. Then comes marriage. And now it’s a milestone every couple in California can celebrate.”

I imagine the wingnuts are firing up their boycott machine.

Thanks to the new governor in New York, we are likely to see a decent amount of wedding tourism.  NYT:

Gov. David A. Paterson has directed all state agencies to begin to revise their policies and regulations to recognize same-sex marriages performed in other jurisdictions, like Massachusetts, California and Canada.

In a directive issued on May 14, the governor’s legal counsel, David Nocenti, instructed the agencies that gay couples married elsewhere “should be afforded the same recognition as any other legally performed union.”

The directive was issued prior to the court ruling and it is interesting that it took so long for this to be made public.  Nevertheless, this does mean that many a gay New Yorker will make a trip to California to fill out their Party A and Party B forms and then return home to get the 1,300 rights that the Republican controlled NY State Senate refuses to give them.  Sure they could drive over to Massachusetts, but I have to say there are many prettier places to get married out here than in MA.  No offense to the Bay Staters.

SD-15: Media Failure In California Hits A New High… Or Low

The blogosphere has been talking a lot today, due to the release of Scott McClellan’s book, about the media whitewashes and their failures to properly inform the country in the run-up to war, due to corporate dictates or budget constraints or sheer laziness.  That has a residual effect everywhere.  The same problems we see with the media at the national level are magnified at the local level, where money is even tighter and cluelessness abounds.  I had to do a double-take when I read the LA Times’ paean “GOP maverick” Sen. Abel Maldonado, supposedly in the context of his re-election “campaign” for State Senate.

SANTA MARIA– — Sen. Abel Maldonado crouched to desk level and, with a mischievous smile, enlisted the help of sixth-grader Michelle Grahame to sweat the governor over the state’s looming budget cuts.

The 12-year-old was immersed in her computer animation project, an Earth-like blue sphere hovering behind a curiously grown-up message: “Please don’t cut Education.”

Maldonado, on a tour of Ralph Dunlap Elementary, persuaded her to tweak it to read: “Please don’t cut Education Arnold.” He left with a printout he promised to deliver to Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, who is hashing over ways to close the state’s estimated $2-billion budget gap.

“We’re in some challenging times, but I’ve made a commitment not to cut education,” Maldonado, a Republican, told school officials and PTA members after the tour. “We’re going to have to get creative.”

It was a gentle jab at Schwarzenegger, but Maldonado has crossed the governor and his party leadership before, earning the scorn of conservatives and Republican loyalists. One party official writing on a conservative blog declared that the senator, one of the few Latino Republicans in Sacramento, “is not one of us.”

Those same maverick traits, however, have intrigued party moderates who are struggling to make the GOP more appealing to the fastest-growing segments of the California electorate: Latinos and independents.

I’m flummoxed at why you would publish this glowing profile, which reads like it came right out of Maldonado’s press office, without revealing some information that people might find helpful.  To wit:

• There is a fleeting reference to a “write-in campaign organized by Democrats,” but absolutely no mention of Dennis Morris and his quest to offer the voters in the district an actual choice to the as-of-now unopposed Senator.  Mark Buchman of the SLO County Dems is quoted blaming Don Perata for the lack of an opponent to begin with, but even though Buchman is Morris’ acting campaign chair, the story never allows him the opportunity to mention the write-in hopeful.

• There is NO MENTION AT ALL of the fact that Maldonado has crossfiled to run as a write-in candidate on the Democratic ballot in an effort to short-circuit that campaign organized by those scheming Democrats, no mention of the effort to run on both sides of the ballot.

• There is no mention of Maldonado’s actual record on anything but the 2007 budget, like his vote against the Global Warming Solutions Act, for example.

• There is a mention of Maldonado’s signing on to a plan even more far-reaching than the Governor’s, to SELL the California Lottery, a shortsighted and ridiculously stupid idea that amounts to borrowing against the future yet again, but there is no independent analysis of that proposal; it’s just stuck in there as the midpoint between two supposed extremes and therefore teh awesome.

This is just an abandonment of actual reporting in exchange for a gauzy personal profile.  And considering there’s an election coming up in less than a week, it’s an abdication of responsibility.

Now, the LA Times doesn’t have much of a presence in the 15th Senate District, they don’t have many full-time reporters covering California politics, so they stumble into these half-hearted attempts to inform before election time, and this is what they come up with – a hagiography of a guy who’s running as a Democrat and a Republican to shut down any efforts to challenge him.

This is the media we have in 2008.

Prisons: Federal Receiver threatens to tack another $4.3 billion on the budget deficit

From the SacBee:

Federal receiver J. Clark Kelso told the state today that he wants $70 million right away and $3.43 billion out of the deficit-ridden budget the next fiscal year to pay for prison health care facilities if lawmakers don’t agree to borrow money to do it.

Kelso’s letter to the Department of Finance said he anticipates needing $3.5 billion over the two subsequent fiscal years to pay for the 10,000 medical care beds he says he needs to bring the state into compliance with two federal court cases.

The bond package in the Senate faces an uphill climb as some Republicans are opposed to the package joining some questioning Dems. Kelso, for his part, says that if SB 1665 isn’t passed, he’ll just get the federal court to raid the general fund under its power from a court decree declaring our prison health care system unconstitutional.

I remain hopeful that the Senate will act favorably upon SB 1665, and that I will not be forced to ask you to immediately sweep all available funds and to take other extraordinary reallocations of funds to provide financing for my construction program,” Kelso said in the letter. “However, I can no longer stand idly by while the state continues its pattern of prevarication.”

All of this still doesn’t address the underlying question of our prison system: the warehousing of California’s underclass. Not only do we spend about $25K/year to keep each prisoner, we also lose the potential that many of these prisoners have. We fail to educate them, fail to rehabilitate them, and then train them to be better criminals.

CA-03: Dan Lungren wouldn’t go to Pittsburgh in January

But you know where he would go? Hawaii. To an event hosted by the American Association of Airport Executives.  Dan Lungren, a longtime hack always looking for his next gig, currently represents the 3rd Congressional District north of Sacramento.  Lungren also thinks himself a wily fox who can avoid ethics rules that bar lobbyists from going on vacation-themed junkets. And ABC News caught on to his little scheme (h/t CapNotes). Video here

So, here’s how it works. Lungren and his wife fly first class to the beautiful Kona coast of Hawaii.  The Congressman gives a half-hour speech at the Hapuna Beach Prince Resort (a lovely resort that has recently been restored after some earthquake damage). He bills his Congressional campaign for the expenses, but, conveniently, then does a fundraiser at the conference. So, it’s even better than the old rules! He can get a free trip AND some campaign cash as a party favor! W00t!

Lungren says he would have gone to the conference were it LA, but hesitated when asked if he would have attended the conference if it were in Pittsburgh. Lungren couldn’t even ditch the arrogance long enough to defend himself when he said:”Do I look like I go to Pittsburgh in January?”

The worst part of all this? Quite possibly it comes from the video of Dan Lungren parading around in a swimsuit, lathering himself in suntan lotion. For the record, I support proper skincare: Always wear sunscreen when taking bribes contributions in Hawaii. You can throw some love to Bill Durston on the Calitics ActBlue Page.

Field Poll on 98/99

I do some work for No on 98. The Field Poll (PDF) on the statewise propositions came out this morning. Prop 98 is down 33% Yes-43%No, while Prop 99 is up 48% Yes, 30% No. The splits across almost every line oppose Prop 98. Homeowners, renters, poll voters, mail voters all oppose Prop 98. The exception? Why, it is Republicans and conservatives, of course.

However, given the variability of turnout for the election next Tuesday, nothing is certain. From Janis Hiroshima of the League of Women Voters:

Despite the millions being spent on deceptive ads, the numbers show voters are smarter than the landlords think. They are rejecting Prop. 98 as a landlord scheme and supporting real eminent domain reform in Prop. 99. Our focus now is on making sure all these people actually vote on Tuesday.

Turnout is important for these statewide initiatives as well as local races.  You can be sure the streets of areas with contested primaries will be flooded with canvassers and visibility operations. I'm sure the tenant activists will be out in force.

UPDATE: The Capitol Weekly has a story about Thomas Coates dropping about a million into the Yes on 98 campaign. Coates is a real estate investor who would dearly love to reap the windfall that he would see if rent control were eliminated.  The landlords certainly don't think this is over.

Victor Manuel Perez’ Changing Resume: Voters Ask What He Really Does

XPosted on MyDesert.com

Victor Manuel Perez, his campaign for 80th Assembly District, and his employer cannot seem to agree on his job title.  Wondering here why the major discrepancies.

Perez and his campaign sent out fact sheets and fliers to the voters of the Coachella Valley and Imperial County stating that Perez was ‘Director of Community Health & Advocacy’ at his place of employment, the Borrego Community Health Foundation.  Perez also ‘sold’ the idea that he was a ‘healthcare worker’ to the California Nurses Association in seeking and obtaining their endorsement for the 80th AD.

However, when I placed calls to the Borrego Centro Medico Mobile Unit where Perez works, employees informed me that Perez was in fact ‘Facilities and Maintenance Manager.’  Seems a far step from Director of Community Health & Advocacy and healthcare worker.

More below the flip…

Check out the Borrego Community Health Foundation website to see a picture of the Centro Medico Mobile Unit where Perez is either ‘Facilities Maintenance Manager’ or Director of Community Health & Advocacy,’ depending on whether you believe the campaign literature or the employees of Borrego.

Now, Borrego recently changed Perez’ job title at the Centro Medico Mobile Unit to ‘Director of Community Health and Advocacy/Site Manager.’  What a success this candidate is, he just keeps climbing that corporate ladder.

Just what does Perez really do for a living?  What are his responsibilities at Borrego, really?

It seems more and more likely that Perez, his campaign, and his employer have colluded to seriously embellished his resume.

“Health Care to You” Outreach Program

Base:

55557 Campus Road

Thermal, CA  92274

Phone: (760) 399-4526

Fax: (760) 399-4421

As a major part of the Borrego Community Health Foundation’s outreach program, the mobile unit improves access to health services by transporting medical care to the homes and workplaces of Coachella Valley residents.  The Mobile Clinic “Health Care to You” program travels throughout the Coachella Valley and visits Thermal, Mecca, Oasis, east Indio, Desert Hot Springs, and other areas.  The Mobile Unit focuses on primary care, well children, youth and preventive health and education services.  Se Habla Español.

Centro Medico Mobile Unit promotes environmental and community health by extending health services to local residents through health fairs, community sites, churches, schools, farm worker sites and residences.  The Centro Medico Mobile Unit operates on weekdays, weekends, early morning hours, and evening hours.

The Community We Serve

Although we provide medical care to people from all walks of life, our programs are specifically tailored to low-income, underserved, and hard-to-reach communities as well as migrant farm-worker sites.  The “Healthcare to You” program also serves local school districts and indigent populations with quality medical services at low or no cost.

Clinic Hours of Operation

Clinic hours and schedule vary depending on season (BluePalmSpringsBoyz note: and depending on Perez’ campaign schedule)…

…Director of Community Health and Advocacy/Site Manager

Manuel Perez, ED. M. has over 15 years experience in farm worker health issues and 5 years in community health and advocacy in a community clinic setting.  He was born and raised in the Coachella area and is currently a Coachella Valley Unified School Board Trustee.

Interesting that Perez is 35 years old according to his biography and yet he has over 15 years of experience in farm worker health issues as well as 5 years in community health and advocacy in a community clinic setting.   Seems that he has been working in the healthcare field since he was 15 years old.  (Seems that Perez went to the Hillary Clinton resume building school for success.)  Wondering how he was able to fit in his Bachelor’s degree as well as the Ed.M., another 5 years to account for.

Add to this the fact that Perez touts his background as including being raised in Imperial County.  This is news to the Rick Gonzales and Richard Gutierrez campaigns. Gonzales and Gutierrez were born and raised, for real, in Imperial County.  Locals, in a small town society, know that Perez was not raised in Imperial County.

Will check out his website and do some more fact checking.  More to follow.

Obama Organizing Fellows….I got accepted…

Today, I found out that I got accepted as an Organizing Fellow (unpaid) for Barack Obama’s campaign.

Even though it is unpaid and for some people that is a deal breaker, it just feels right to be able to participate in the Obama Organizing Fellows program.

Since I live in Southern California, I chose Nevada (California is not a choice), because it is a swing state in the upcoming election for the location of my Fellowship.

Normally, I would be working, but since I got laid off a few months ago, I have some extra time (no pun intended).  So this is the perfect opportunity for me to go out there and support Obama’s campaign.  Plus, I also know Spanish, so I KNOW I can use my Spanish skills in Nevada.

The training will start between June 14th-16th and it runs until ~July 26th.    I’m pretty sure, the campaign will be able to provide housing, as i’ve heard that the Obama campaign is pretty good about providing housing for volunteers.

The only thing I need to worry about know is having enough money to eat, but somehow i’ll manage even if it’s cup-o-noodles and water for the whole month.

Wish me luck, and i’m accepting donations for my cup-o-noodles rations :).

Here is the letter:

Congratulations!

We’ve reviewed your fellowship application, and I am pleased to offer you admission into the Obama Organizing Fellows program.

Although Barack will campaign vigorously in all 50 states, our need for fellows is particularly high in certain states, and we strongly encourage you to relocate to one of these high-need states to participate in the program.

The program in these high-need states will begin with a training from June 14th to June 16th. Afterwards, fellows will organize for Barack in communities in these states through July 26th.

To accept this offer of admission, you must fill out this form and let us know where you can participate in the program by Thursday at 5:00 p.m. CST:

Should you be unable to relocate to one of these selected states, you will still be able to participate in your home state, but the program will begin in mid-July and run through the end of August.

Fellows who participate in high-need states will be given special priority should employment opportunities arise at the conclusion of the program.

If you accept this offer and join the program in one of our high-need states, someone from the campaign will call you next week to welcome you personally, discuss further details, and answer any questions you have. If you accept in another state, someone from the campaign will call you closer to the time of the start of the program to discuss the details further.

Thank you for all that you’ve done — we look forward to meeting you and working with you in the weeks and months ahead.
