Letter from a veteran organizer to California Congressmembers on the ACORN vote

Jono Shaffer is a 20-year union organizer and was the lead organizer in the “Justice for Janitors” campaign in Los Angeles.

Late last week, the United States Congress unconstitutionally voted to bar ACORN from ever receiving federal funds of any kind in the future.   The U.S. Senate did a similar thing.  While some of the things that have come out about problems inside ACORN are troubling and in the words of many ACORN leaders despicable and unacceptable, the move by the US Congress is horrifying.

The wholesale removal of progressives and the squashing of progressive ideas from the labor movement, industry, politics, education and virtually all mainstream institutions of American society that occurred as a result of McCarthyism crippled this country and began the spiral that has left this country in the horrendous condition we are in today.  This attack on ACORN and the witch hunt against progressives like Van Jones is a return to those destructive times except that this time democrats are in power.  It must be stopped.

Below is the list of California Democrats who voted in favor of barring ACORN.  I encourage you to denounce their cowardly actions.  Just as in the past, first they come for one and if we don’t unite in their defense, they will come for all of us eventually.

Jono

California Democrats who Voted to Defund ACORN: Baca; Berman; Capps; Cardoza; Chu; Davis; Eshoo; Farr; Harman; Lofgren, Zoe; Matsui; McNerney; Miller, George; Napolitano; Richardson; Sanchez, Loretta; Schiff; Speier; Thompson

Dear California Democratic Congresspeople,

I am a lifelong Democrat and California resident who has walked literally hundreds of precincts to help elect thoughtful Democrats to office at the local, state and federal levels.   I have worked as a union organizer for SEIU for more than two decades and as part of my work, I have voluntarily helped direct precinct operations and recruited hundreds of members to work on campaigns for a number of you in the Southern California area.

Today, I am writing to denounce your cowardly, unconstitutional and immoral decision to vote in favor of the motion intending to bar ACORN from receiving federal funds in the future.   Your vote contradicts some of the most fundamental principles of our country and sends a message that will serve to squash open discourse and freedom of association in the same despicable way that the acts of the House Un-American Activities Committee led by Joseph McCarthy did in the 1950s.

There is no question that some of the things that have come out about actions taken by a small number of ACORN staff are quite troubling.  In fact, the leadership of ACORN itself has been among the most vocal critics of those actions and they have moved swiftly and forcefully to deal with the problems when they were known.

Your vote in favor of the “De-Fund ACORN Act”, however, is indefensible.  No one can deny that there has been a concerted effort by the Republican Party and the conservative right to destroy the work of progressive organizations and activists who have helped turn the political tide in this country over the past five years.  That effort is attempting to derail essential health care reform, financial industry reform, labor law reform and continue the unacceptable status quo that has put our country in the worst condition it has faced in my lifetime.   Your vote is a vote in support of that effort and I am appalled by your decision.

I demand that you publicly rescind your vote and apologize for being complicit in any way with the witch hunt that has been fostered by the Republican Party and the conservative right.

You should be ashamed of yourselves.

Sincerely,

Jono Shaffer

Pelosi v. Woolsey on war funding; Sam Farr on the fence

The Chronicle has a nice rundown of where Northern California House Democrats stand on today’s war funding vote.  The lines of fissure have pitted Nancy Pelosi against Lynn Woolsey, which, if it’s safe to assume that San Francisco is every bit as progressive on Iraq and Afghanistan as Marin and Sonoma Counties are, you could fairly depict as a struggle between the priorities of the majority leadership and the preferences of constituents back home in the Bay Area.  Lynn Woolsey comes out here fighting like a champ for her district, while the Speaker is representing, in effect, the Obama administration.  Which I suppose we should just start getting used to (it’s her job, after all).

One surprise here is that Sam Farr (CA-17) is now “on the fence.”  Farr used to be a ‘no’ vote.  He signed a letter in 2007 committing not to vote for funding without timelines, as well as another letter objecting to the bill in its current form with the IMF provisions included.  His even straddling the fence now is a pretty major reversal, and demonstrates how hard these members are being pushed to break with principle on this decision.

If you live in Farr’s district and believe that a war funding bill without an exit plan and with an IMF bailout is a dumb idea, his office could use a gentle push: 202-225-2861.  One question you could ask is the question Jane Hamsher put to Zoe Lofgren: How exactly does the Congressman justify supporting a bailout of European banks after his own state has been refused assistance when on the brink of bankruptcy?

The vote is today and the final outcome is being shaped this very moment, so your call would need to be placed right now.

As per The Chronicle, here’s where other Northern California Democrats come out:

Where Northern California Democrats stand

How House members polled Monday broke down on the $106 billion bill:

On the fence: Sam Farr, Monterey; Mike Thompson, Napa; Mike Honda, San Jose; Jerry McNerney, Pleasanton; Doris Matsui, Sacramento

Likely/definite yes: House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, San Francisco; George Miller, Martinez

Likely/definite no: Lynn Woolsey, Petaluma; Barbara Lee, Oakland; Pete Stark, Fremont; Jackie Speier, San Mateo

Not returning calls: Anna Eshoo, Palo Alto; Zoe Lofgren, San Jose

State blogs coordinating to stop passage of the war supplemental

State blogs all over the country are teaming up today to encourage readers to show their support to House Democrats who are voting no tomorrow on a war supplemental bill that includes no exit strategy for Afghanistan and an IMF bailout to boot.  Only four more ‘no’ votes are needed to stop it, and there has been MUCH pressure from the White House on some of these members to get back in line, so calls from constituents are critical today.

Among the other state blogs getting the message out are: My Left Nutmeg, Turn Maine Blue, Square State Project, Not Larry Sabato, Michigan Liberal, Green Mountain Daily, Burnt Orange Report, and Blue Mass Group.

This kind of coordinated online action in opposition to the bill has moved the ball considerably over the last several days.  Bringing the state blogs into the picture will help step up that success.

Here’s a message from Robert Greenwald, the president of Brave New Films, where I work:

Here in California, Sam Farr, Bob Filner, Diane Watson, Pete Stark,  Mike Thompson, John Tierney, Linda Sanchez, Mike Honda, Grace Napolitano, Jackie Speier, George Miller and Zoe Lofgren have all taken bold antiwar positions in the past.  If you live in any of these districts, call, announce yourself as a constituent and tell them you support them voting no tomorrow.  Leave a message if the office is closed (which it almost certainly is).

Sam Farr (202) 225-2861

Bob Filner (202) 225-8045

Diane Watson (202) 225-7084

Pete Stark (202) 225-5065

Mike Thompson (202) 225-3311

John Tierney (202) 225-8020

Linda Sanchez  (202) 225-6676

Mike Honda (202) 225-2631

Grace Napolitano (202) 225-5256

Jackie Speier (202) 225-3531

George Miller (202) 225-3201

Zoe Lofgren (202) 225-3072

And of course, Lynn Woolsey, Maxine Waters and Barbara Lee have been outstanding leaders in the caucus on war-related issues over the years, even back when being progressive on foreign policy was like screaming in the wilderness. If any of these are your Representative, call today and tell them how important it is that they cast their votes against the supplemental when they vote on Tuesday.

Lynn Woolsey (202) 225-5161

Maxine Waters (202) 225-2201

Barbara Lee (202) 225-2661

Former Chief of Dermatology at Cedars-Sinai Calls on McCain to Release His Medical Records

Cross-posted from Open Left. The author, Ron Bronow, M.D., is the former Chief of Dermatology at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in L.A., and one of over 2,700 doctors across the country who signed an open letter from Brave New PAC (disclosure: my employer) calling on John McCain to issue a full, public release of his medical records.  Dr. Michael Fratkin of Eureka and Dr. Noah Craft at UCLA are featured in this video explaining the importance of the issue.

Rush Limbaugh and Bill O’Reilly are screaming foul about an effort on the part of 2,768 doctors (myself among them) to get John McCain to release his medical records. After a 30-second TV ad spot on the issue went up on MSNBC for two days last week, O’Reilly even managed to bully the network into pulling the commercial off the air. Apparently, asking very real questions about McCain’s health is deemed by the right wing punditocracy to be just another disgraceful partisan attack, even when the questions come from thousands of medical doctors all over the country.

I know it’s a lot to ask of Limbaugh and the like, but let’s consider the facts:

Nobody disagrees with the fact that the melanoma removed from Senator McCain’s temple in 2000 was aggressive, requiring radical surgery. But there are two conflicting reports out there in need of resolution.  In May, when the McCain campaign allowed 20 reporters three hours each to review almost 1,200 pages of McCain’s medical records (no cell phones, internet access or photocopying allowed), one particularly disturbing piece of news emerged from the speed reading contest. While the Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale had called the lesion on McCain’s temple a Stage IIA melanoma when it was resected eight years ago, it turns out that two pathologists at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology had reviewed the same slides at the time and reached a different conclusion.  They reported that the lesion was “highly suggestive of a metastasis of malignant melanoma and may represent a satellite metastasis.” That would be a Stage III melanoma.

So what’s the difference? The survival rates for Stage II melanoma are 79% for five years and 65% for ten years. For stage III melanomas the 5 and 10 year survival rates are 55% and 38%.

In general, if a melanoma recurs after the initial treatment, the five year survival rate is 7-19%, depending on the site of metastasis. It’s agreed that Senator McCain’s surgery in 2000 consisted of a 2.5 x 2.5 inch excision of the forehead tumor and the removal of 33 lymph nodes, followed by reconstructive surgery. Many experts feel that this indicates that the Senator’s tumor was Stage III.  The report from the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology only bolsters that suspicion.

The right wing pundits can – and will – kick and scream and cry foul about this call from the medical community for full disclosure.  That won’t change the fact that we have a right to know the stage of the disease of a man running for the most important job in the world.

LET’S HAVE THE TRUTH.

L.A.’s Stupid Carpool Lanes

Courtesy of the LAist, the easiest question in the world: Are NorCal Carpool Lanes Better than SoCal’s?

For those unfamiliar with L.A.’s back-asswards freeway system, for some dumb reason that makes no sense, the carpool lanes here are divided from the next lanes over by double yellow lines, intermittently interrupted by broken white lines.  Worse yet, the double yellow lines frequently remain unbroken through one, two, even three exits, which means you actually have to know in advance where the broken white lines are located on each freeway to be sure you can make your exit.

L.A. takes a lot of well-deserved grief for its lack of public transportation (which is getting better, by the way), but this kind of ‘policy’ doesn’t even make sense to the Hummer-driving gasaholics clogging the 405 northbound and southbound every minute of every day.

Happily, Councilmember Janice Hahn is calling b*llsh*t on hostage-taking, carbon-emitting carpool lanes:

“I know for a fact that up in Northern California, car pool lanes don’t have the double-double, triple-triple, yellow-yellow, white lines,” she exclaimed in a confused manner. “In fact, they treat them as just a lane that you can get in and out of. I think that is one of the number one reasons they [car pool lanes in Los Angeles] are not effective right now–is the exit and entrances to these car pool lanes.”

Orange County is getting rid of them — is L.A. really going to place itself farther back on the learning curve than the place that made these women celebrities?

This Brave Nation

Brave New Foundation (disclaimer: my employer)just launched episode 2 of This Brave Nation, a documentary series born out of a collaboration between BNF and The Nation magazine.  In this episode, two legendary Californians, Dolores Huerta and Bonnie Raitt, are featured in conversation with one another.  (Episode 1 also features two Californians: Van Jones and Carl Pope.  Really serves to remind you just how outsized a role our state has played in building the progressive movement in the U.S.)

Here’s the trailer with Bonnie Raitt.  You can view the entire 30-minute episode at http://bravenation.com/bonnie_…

Future episodes will include Anthony Romero and Ava Lowery, Majora Carter and Pete Seeger, and Tom Hayden and Naomi Klein. At a moment when progressives are healing the wounds of a divisive presidential primary, this series reminds us of the solidarity of our movement.

A Dream Deferred

Brave New Foundation (disclaimer: my employer) just released this new video featuring students who grew up in the U.S., worked their way through high school and earned the merits to attend college, but now face legal and financial barriers to enrolling due solely to their immigration status.  The DREAM Act, which died in Congress in 2006 along with immigration reform as a whole, would have removed the federal provision that prevents states from allowing undocumented students who grew up here in America to qualify for in-state tuition, and would have provided a path to legal status for these future doctors, teachers, scientists and engineers.  The California DREAM Act, vetoed last year by the Governor, would have allowed undocumented students who grew up here in California to be treated like any other student when they applied for financial aid for college.

These bills aimed to rationalize our nation’s hamstrung immigration policies and to help bolster an eroding pool of skilled and educated workers in America.  Their demise spelled a huge missed opportunity for California and for the country.

Big thanks to Senator Cedillo for taking a stand on this critical issue, and for a career of fighting for more humane and sensible immigration policies.  Let’s hope to see the DREAM Act reintroduced in Sacramento and in Washington in the near future.

Bilbray: You’re either with us, or you’re with the immigrants.

For all of Rudy Giuliani’s many, many, many faults, as Mayor of New York he came as close as any Republican officeholder is ever likely to come to a champion for immigrants’ rights.  Even as a presidential candidate, as he flip-flops on abortion and backtracks on immigration, he has so far refused to apologize for New York City’s unofficial status under his mayoralty as a sanctuary city.  “I didn’t have the luxury of political rhetoric,” Giuliani has explained of his administration’s policy to instruct law enforcement officers not to take account of the immigration status of victims and suspects in criminal investigations.  “So I said, if you are an illegal immigrant in New York City and a crime is committed against you, I want you to report it.”

Well, undocumented immigrants, Congressman Brian Bilbray of Solana Beach would rather you not.  A bill introduced yesterday by Bilbray and a group of neo-Know Nothing lawmakers threatens to penalize sanctuary cities by withholding up to fifty percent of their federal anti-terrorism funding.  So if you’re a resident of New York, Washington DC, Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego, Fresno, Phoenix, Denver, Seattle, Miami, Chicago, Baltimore, Ann Arbor, Detroit, Minneapolis, Madison, Reno, Newark, Virginia Beach, Albuquerque, Durham, Columbus, Tulsa, Austin, Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, Salt Lake City or any of dozens of other cities, you can thank Mr. Bilbray for trying to make you even more vulnerable to an Al Qaeda attack.  Thanks, Brian!

Let’s re-cap what would seem to be a critical detail of the event Mr. Bilbray purports to want to prevent from happening again by intimidating undocumented workers from reporting crimes against them: 9/11.

Q. How many of the 19 hijackers on September 11, 2001 were in the U.S. illegally?

A. Zero.

So what exactly does pushing undocumented immigrants further into the shadows accomplish for protecting our nation from terrorist attacks?  Same answer as above.

We’ve all grown used to Republicans clubbing voters over the head with 9/11 to push through their anti-immigrant agenda, not to mention their anti-worker, pro-rich and pro-war agendas.  Bilbray would like to take the logic a step further, by denying American cities the resources to find and catch terrorist plotters until they get on board the anti-immigrant bandwagon.

The once-might “National Security Party” of the GOP hasn’t just lost its edge; it’s headed straight over the cliff.
