Rockridge Closing — Why Building Progressive Infrastructure Matters So Much

Dave Johnson, Speak Out California

On the same day that Barack Obama raised one million dollars in one minute for his campaign George Lakoff’s Rockridge Institute announced that they will be closing their doors.

In the comments at the OpenLeft blog post, The Rockridge Era Ends, Paul Rosenberg wrote,

As If We Needed Any More Proof That Democrats STILL Don’t Get It!

This is really terrible news–not just because of the loss of Rockridge, as if that wasn’t bad enough, but because it shows so clearly that there is NO recognition of the need to build progressive infrastructure.

Just look at how many millions have been raised by the Presidential campaigns this cycle.  And just a tiny fraction of it could have not just kept Rockridge afloat, but DOUBLED it in size.  …

I want to say this about that:

Donating a dollar to a progressive infrastructure organization like Speak Out California today is like giving ten dollars to EACH progressive candidate in every local, state and nation race this November, two years later, and every election following.

Let me explain what I mean.  Progressive infrastructure organizations like Speak Out California and Commonweal Institute and information outlets like California Progress Report and Calitics are working to help the public understand and appreciate what progressives are about.  By explaining the benefits of a progressive approach they help build public acceptance of and demand for progressive policies and candidates — across the board.  As more people understand why progressive solutions benefit them more than conservative proposals, they develop a lasting positive identification with the progressive “brand.”  Then later, during the election cycle, they vote for progressive candidates — across the board.

This is how the conservatives have been so successful.  They work year-round to convince people to identify as conservatives.  (You’ve probably complained or heard people complain that that have managed to turn “liberal” into a bad word in people’s minds.)  When election time comes around it’s as though all that their candidates have to do is point at the opponent and shout “liberal” to win.  They ride a wave of nationally-advanced propaganda convincing people to support “tort reform” or “tax relief.”  This has been going on for years, so at election time everything is laid out for them on a silver platter, with the public prepared and primed.

Progressive candidates, on the other hand, are generally on their own, starting from scratch for each election.  Their general campaign begins in the late summer or fall, they have to decide what “issues” to run on, they have to develop a message from scratch, by themselves, and then they have to reach their voters from scratch.  And they have to do all of this on their own in just a few months.  No wonder conservatives, even with their awful “you’re on your own” philosophy, have managed to do so well and gain so much traction.

This is why building up a national progressive advocacy infrastructure would leverage all of those campaign donations and help us build a sustainable progressive majority.  A few dollars to progressive advocacy organizations on any given TODAY builds long-term support for every progressive candidate on any given TOMORROW.  It provides leverage — lowering the need for massive election-cycle funding.

The demise of Rockridge Institute demonstrates that the Democratic Party donor base hasn’t yet gotten that message.  Instead, masses of money have to be raised for candidates at the very last minute — for example a million dollars in one minute, the day before the big Pennsylvania primary.  And almost all of that money will just literally go up in the air to pay for TV ads that leave nothing behind to show for the money.  They don’t build the brand, they don’t tell people about the benefits of progressive ideas, they don’t help other candidates…  But almost nothing for the Rockridges and Speak Out California’s and Commonweal Institutes.

Please think about donating to help build a solid progressive infrastructure of organizations that will work year-round to help the public understand why progressive policies and candidate are better for them than the conservative solutions.  This will help build a sustainable progressive majority in America.  Please help these organizations grow.  It’s about building a progressive ecosystem that benefits all of us.

Iowa Caucus Night With Calitics and Drinking Liberally in Santa Monica

(bumped – come join us tomorrow night! – promoted by David Dayen)

OK, so next week is going to be of minor importance if you care about things like who the next leader of the free world is going to be.  So Calitics is going to be joining with Drinking Liberally and our treasure trove of national bloggers here in Southern California to watch the Iowa caucus returns in the only place they should be watched; a bar with a big-screen TV.  Here are the details:

Thursday, Jan. 3

Nocturnal Bar

2101 Lincoln Boulevard (@ Grant)

Santa Monica, CA 90404

6pm-?

We’re also going to be joined by Bernie Horn, policy director at the Center for Policy Alternatives and author of Framing the Future: How Progressive Values Can Win Elections and Influence People.

This should be a lot of fun.  It’s going to be the place to be for caucus night.  Come by and say hello!

Northern CA Nominations for 2008 Calitics Endorsements

(You’ve got until 5pm to get in your nominations – promoted by Lucas O’Connor)

So, here we are again. The ActBlue Page is wiped clean (save the Calitics PACs), and we are picking new candidates in our new process. Once we get the nominations, we’ll do a conference call to talk about what we would like to ask the potential endorsees.

So, for now, we’re looking for Northern California candidates for the CA Legislature in 2008 or Congress.  Let’s say the cut-off is 5PM on Wednesday. Post your nominations in the comments.

CA Draft Gore Ballot Drive Is Getting Popular

Volunteers Surge as California Draft Gore Ignites Ballot Initiative Effort

SACRAMENTO, CA
Upon announcing their intentions of putting Al Gore on the California ballot for the state’s primary election, California Draft Gore has seen a surge of Gore volunteers and positive support for the state-wide initiative which joins the national effort to place Gore on state ballots.

Since the organizers of California Draft Gore announced a grassroots state-wide campaign earlier this month they have added a slew of volunteers and contributions to their efforts. The state-wide organization is coordinating hundreds of Gore volunteers who will be participating in the signature gathering process.

“It’s been an overwhelming but exhilarating experience to see the enthusiasm for Al. People who normally don’t volunteer for stuff are eager to help,” said Chris Vallone, Northern California campaign coordinator. “In just the last week we have had at least 250 volunteers sign up, but many volunteers are still needed in every district, city, county and region. Everyone who supports Gore has a place in this campaign.”

The California Election Code requires that in order for a candidate’s name to be placed on the presidential primary ballot, a minimum of 500 signatures of registered Democrats must be obtained from each of the state’s 53 congressional districts. California Draft Gore has regional coordinators and sub-regional coordinators managing signature collection in each of the four regions of California. Each district within the four regions has a district leader recruiting and training as many volunteers as possible to begin collecting signatures on October 8.

“I view a donation to Al Gore’s candidacy as a gift to my grandchild!” said volunteer Bonnie Price of La Mesa, California.

San Francisco volunteer Chenoa Akey added, “What happened in 2000 was a travesty, the ramifications of which are being felt globally to this day.”

Signature collection begins on October 8 and must be completed by December 4, 2007. Dwight D. Eisenhower was the last president elected due to a draft effort. For more information on the campaign or to contribute to California Draft Gore’s campaign, visit www.california4gore.org.

About California Draft Gore:
California Draft Gore PAC is a grassroots organization. The organization and its website is not affiliated with or authorized by Al Gore, any candidate or candidate’s committee.

Calitics Quarterly Santa Monica – One Hell of a Party

So if you built a bar, invited Digby, John Amato from Crooks and Liars, Skippy the Bush Kangaroo, SteveAudio, RJ Eskow of HuffPo, Todd Beeton of MyDD, members of the Russ Warner for Congress campaign, Drinking Liberally Westside LA, thereisnospoon, hekebolos, vernonlee, some CDP delegates, Calitics commenters like Zack from the SFV and Tim Goodrich, a whole mess of SoCal Kossacks like Shockwave and shayera and Major Danby and BruinKid and more, and ME… and had them come together to raise money for some great California candidates and have a blast…

Then you would have some indication of how it went last night.

We had lots of fun and energized the LA blogging community.  We have so many great bloggers here, but a lot of them focus on national issues.  It was great to have them out to support the local scene.  And of course, it was great to meet and thank Digby for all of her incredible work (from what I hear, those going to a certain convention in Chicago in August may get a chance to do that as well).  There was a parent who brought his 17 year-old daughter to the bar just to meet her!

It was a fabulous night.  Pics (besides this great picture of Digby with dday-edit by Brian) on the flip:

Wednesday. You. Digby. Live.

(bumped- – promoted by dday)

I have exciting news about our Calitics end-of-the-quarter fundraiser.  As you all know, we’re starting a tradition of holding a bar event every three months at the end of the quarter to raise money at our ActBlue page for progressive California candidates.  There’s an event in San Francisco and an event in Santa Monica.  And boy, have we snagged a great co-host: the talk of the blogosphere, fresh off her powerful and brilliant speech at the Take Back America Conference, Santa Monica’s own… Digby!

Details on the flip:

The proprietress of Hullabaloo has graciously accepted our invitation to co-host the event.  Here’s what you do:

Drop a few shekels in the Calitics Act Blue page for great progressive candidates like Jerry McNerney, Charlie Brown, Mark Leno (state Senate candidate), or the Calitics CaliPAC, our new state and federal PAC that we set up to help fund progressive infrastructure and build a progressive majority. (we’re on the honor system, folks, but please give if you can)

Then, join us Wednesday night for our end-of-the-quarter celebration (in association with Drinking Liberally Westside Los Angeles), and meet the lady who crashed Google Video’s servers this week!

Details:

The Cock & Bull
2947 Lincoln Blvd
Santa Monica, CA 90405
Wednesday, June 27  7:00pm-whenever

This should be a heck of a lot of fun, a way to help some good candidates, and a great opportunity to thank Digby for her tireless work exposing the massive fraud that’s been perpetrated on this nation, and being one of the most tranchant, insightful, and unyielding voices in the blogosphere.  We are fortunate to have her in this movement, and we’re ecstatic that she’ll be able to join us Wednesday night.

Won’t you join us as well?

  • What comes before Part B? (depends on where you live) SF and SoCal answers.
  • California Congressman George Miller (D-Martinez) has really been reaching out online as of late (keep it up and ramp it up). While his Darfur youtube video is important, what I really like is his new Facebook group for, “questions and suggestions about what Democrats are and should be doing to stop the War in Iraq.” Miller is an super-great Congressman and is in the Speaker’s inner circle so go tell him your ideas and — who knows — it just might happen.
  • Speaking of Facebook, if you are a political junkie and haven’t yet signed up, you are selling yourself short. So go set up an account and then join the Calitics group
  • Is Lee Kaplan a douchebag? The line has a question mark because I don’t want to have to pay up $7,500 like some poor Berkeley undergrad who took on the wingnut writer. If (hypothetically) I were to write about such a guy I’d probably make some reference to wetting his pants because some might say when he writes it is with such a voice of fear of the terra that there would be more to laugh at seeing him in person than just reading his junk.
  • What Digby said on Hillary getting booed (but you can’t watch the video of her explaining things perfectly at TBA because so many people wanted to see that it crashed Google). Really. Probably because of a Calitics link.
  • Is Gavin Newsom glorious or is this just his GF talking (Swiss Miss vs. Beth Spotswood — always love it). According to some British online gambling site the answer to the odds is 42:1 that Spots would prevail.
  • San Francisco 4 Democracy Political Affairs Committee meeting has been rescheduled for the following Wednesday, June 27.

Anyone have anything we should know about?

Calitics Is #5 Most Influential Blog in California!

(H/T to The Liberal OC and OC Blog for this!) : )

Take a look at this! Blognetnews.com has released its first list of “California’s Most Influential Political Blogs”, and Calitics has been rated #5! Oh my goodness, we made the Top 5! I guess people are actually paying attention to what we have to say about advancing progressive values in California. This is just terrific.

But you know what’s also terrific? Many of our fantastic friends in the California (and especially Orange County!) blogosphere also made the Top 20 list! The Liberal OC hit #14! California Progress Report hit #10! Orange Juice hit #6! Total Buzz hit #3! And yes, my favorite local right-wing blog, OC Blog, hit #1. Congratulations to my conservative friends at Red County/OC Blog for being the #1 most influential political blog in California!
